It goes without saying Marvel movies are all superhero movies, nobody is saying they;re not, but they're also dabbling in different sub-genres so it's perfectly applicable to label them as such. THE WINTER SOLDIER plays up the conspiracy thriller tropes while ANT-MAN does the heist genre, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is space opera, SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING is aiming for high school coming of age (particularly by John Hughes).

Marvel was pretty smart to take that kind of approach to their films so that there can be variety among their catalog. They made over 20 films in a span of a decade, so it's vital that they try to differentiate their films. The reason we don't see that kind of sub-genre labeling on Bond films is because Bond is practically its own sub-genre in the action/adventure department. It'll borrow elements of trends of the times, but CASINO ROYALE to QUANTUM OF SOLACE is not quite as jarring as say THE FIRST AVENGER to THE WINTER SOLDIER.

That’s what I mean though, I don’t find that transition jarring at all. They feel very similar to me. Guardians as space opera, sure: it’s a sci-fi film with no superheroes in, but Ant Man as a heist movie? These are very slight flavour changes and my point is that they’re over emphasised as the films all come out feeling very similar.

Really? The first Captain America movie was a throwback to pulpy adventure films from the 1940s, whereas the second film was playing up the conspiracy thriller genre where Cap can't trust anyone. It's like jumping from Indiana Jones to Jason Bourne. It's even reflected in the style of film-making as the first film was more old fashioned whereas the Russos used much more fast cutting and shaky cam to hit home how different Steve Rogers' world had changed.

I don't think the marketing of subgenres is over-emphasized, it's pretty well emphasized as it is.

I get that they’re dressed up in those clothes, but it’s all very shallow and is still just a Marvel superhero underneath. First Avenger might have some old cars in it, but that’s not enough to make it an Indy-style pulp adventure. It’s like jumping from a Captain America film to a Captain America film.

Emphasising it at all is overemphasis, I’d say! :)

Looking forward to Spiderman No Way home this and Dr Strange are the two films I am genuinely interested in from the MCU being a fan of the Raimi Spiderman films.

I did not bother with the leaked trailer its looked like a lot of pre vis.

Is that definitely real do you think? The Molina one looks fairly believable but these sorts of things seem to get faked quite a bit.

Bit underwhelmed by the premise for Spiderman No Way Home some of the dialog was clunky, its early days and a teaser admittedly.

I am not a huge fan of the way the Tom Holland films are shot.

    Great seeing Alfred Molina.

It’s weird that Sam Raimi didn’t come back for this, but he’s doing Doctor Strange’s sequel. I guess because the films by Jon Watts have been so successful the studio rather keep the winning team. It took FAR FROM HOME to finally dethrone SKYFALL for Sony films.

A lotta leaks have suggested thst we'll see multiverse characters in the film (Tom Cruise Iron Man, Captain Carter, etc.) So it wouldn't surprise me if Maguire and Garfield show up in Multiverse of Madness to tie into No Way Home

Seems very Dr Strange heavy, doesn’t it? I’ll give it a go though.
Funny to watch two English people playing these superheroes. Plus Molina! :D

The Molina reveal is cool but surely it’s wasted on Holland’s Spidey as he would never have heard of him and has no idea who he is.

Yeah you’d have to think Spidey would take his hat off and Ock would say “Oh, you’re not Peter” :D

I love the Cruise Iron Man idea; that’d be fun to see after all these years!

I hope they don't give too much away regarding Multiverse characters, No Way Home and The Flash I think I am going to have to avoid spoilers, well try to avoid spoilers.

By all accounts Sony is trying pretty hard to keep a tight lid on info regarding this film. That’s partly why they held back on a trailer for so long. We may likely see more crazy stuff.

That's good for sure though the recent leak will be concerning to SONY, if memory serves they had issues with Spectre leaks, though I managed to avoid them at the time.

It wouldn’t surprise me if he had a say in some of the behind the scenes of it, namely the story. Maybe he’ll get a producer credit, to make up for Spider-Man 3.

I just realized there is just one MCU movie I haven t seen: GOTG 2, due to how I disliked the first one. Maybe I should give it a go at some point, just for completion s sake.

I didn’t mind the first but I would say the second is a bit of a disappointment: there’s a whole stretch of the plot in the middle which requires the main characters to sit around doing nothing.

I hated the first one and couldn't finish it, but loved the second one. I'd say give it a go.

Isn't it a bit out of character for Doctor Strange to agree to help Peter so easily?

If Doc Ock hasn't met this version of Peter Parker, is the big reveal going to be that he's speaking to Toby Maguire instead?

Going by the first film it seems pretty in character given how arrogant he is, and he probably feels like he owes Peter a solid given he saved his life in INFINITY WAR.

    My theory:
Strange is really Mysterio in disguse at the beginning, the real one showing up to help later.

My sentiments exactly. I loved the first Guardians, but there was a whole lot of meandering in Vol. 2. They continued with the comedy and attempts at furthering character development but forgot to add any kind of a story. Mantis was a great new addition though. I just hope Vol. 3 has a bit more in the way of a plot.

I’m not a big fan of this trailer, and it got me quite nervous for the film. It seems like it will be quite messy, with three story lines playing out (Peter Parker being revealed as Spider-Man, Doctor Strange and the multi-verse, the actual multi-verse with Green Goblin and Doc Ock). I love Homecoming, and Far From Home was all right, but I would just rather see Tom Holland have his own Spider-Man story without the need for them to include Tony Stark/Nick Fury or any of the other Avengers. Just let Spider-Man be Spider-Man.

We’ve had five movies of Spider-Man being Spider-Man already, so I think it makes sense that in this iteration it’s about Spider-Man being part of a larger universe rather than something insular. The thing that makes this unique is that Holland is now facing past iterations of the previous films.

I’m actually surprised that this isn’t coming out in May 2022. That would have marked 20 years of Spider-Man in cinemas, and seeing Holland facing off the villains of the past would have fit well with that.

Yeah, I kind of get the argument that Holland's SpiderMan has been very tied to the rest of the MCU in all of his films, but then that's kind of been the USP of this version; and after two previous cinematic versions of Spider Man not that long ago, this one did need a USP, and I think it works pretty well. The Raimi films are still my favourite, but these are very watchable.

Arguably I'd say that outside of the Avengers films, his have been the least standalone of the MCU, possibly alongside the last two Cap America films.

My problem is is that Spider-Man has always been overshadowed. I don’t get a great sense of who this Peter Parker really is, because he’s always going to Tony Stark or Dr Strange for help. I get that they are trying to do something different, but to me when they took Spider-Man out of New York and put him in Europe, it lost some of it’s identity.
