Title Track: DAF (the opening bars of Barry's track alone are exquisite)

Title Credits: DN (DAF's are really good - this is almost close enough to to be a tie. But I actually really enjoy DN's 60s dots and the dancing shapes melting into three blind mice)

Main Villain: DN (By a long way. DN is strong enough for me - so he's going to wipe the floor with this incarnation of Blofeld. Say what you want about Waltz - but at least they didn't put him in drag.)

Main Bond Girl: DN (Honey is too iconic for Tiffany case who gets weaker every scene - take a bow Mankewicz - and I find Jill st John grating.)

Henchman: DAF (Wint and Kidd are terrific together. Their introduction is striking and I love how they are weaved sparingly throughout the film with their wonderful music cue from Barry accompanying them.)

Overall Plot: DN (I like DAF's plot until the messy Vegas scenes. There's some thing that just palls for me around this time. And the second half does nothing for me except for Wint and Kidd's demise. DN has a great central mystery.)

Dialogue: DN (Even though DAF has some good lines I prefer the dark and taut dialogue of DN.)

Score: DAF (even though it's roughly and randomly placed sometimes - Barry's work here is wonderful - also includes my beloved 007 theme)

Settings: DN (1962 Jamaica over 1971 Vegas - easily.)

Action: DAF (wins it for the Franks fight. Still a standout, almost Hitchockian sequence)

Humour: DN (Connery's banter with Wiseman is excellent. There is an underplayed humour across the film which I appreciate. DAF has a couple of excellent lines and the Klaus Hergaschimer scene as well as the 'I didn't know there was a pool down there' setup are both excellent. This is quite close. But then DAF has too much goofy stuff and Blofeld in drag is a sin.)

Cinematography: DN (DAF is the first cheap looking Bond film)

Benign Bizarre: DAF (DAF has this in spades)

Suspense: DN (DAF has moments of suspense but overall it doesn't sustain it and the final act is almost completely devoid of suspense)

Minor Characters: DN (although DAF has a plethora of supporting characters once you take Wint and Kidd out the only other characters I like are the gangsters and slumber. The others are irritating in large part. DN has quarrel and a much better Felix. I even like cagey Miss Taro)

Glamour: DN (DAF is the first bond film that looks cheap and grubby. DN presents an exotic and desirable world.)

Bond Performance: DN (not. even. close.)

    DN = 12
    DAF = 5

Considering DAF is in my bottom five Bonds and DN is in my top seven - I think DAF did very well to nab 5 categories here!
  • Any final entries before we get to the Moore years?

    Doesn t seem like it.
  • Indeed it does not.

And after a tough run through the first decade of Bond, Dr. No bounces back with its biggest win to date, by a margin of 221-100-3, taking the games 17-2 over Diamonds are Forever. Now it moves into the Moore years, facing off with 1973's Live and Let Die!

    My scorecard, first things first:

Title Track: LALD (can't beat Paul McCartney)
Title Credits: LALD (never a huge fan, but still takes it)
    Main Villain: DN
Main Bond Girl: DN (both are beautiful but shallow, I went with the more iconic one)
Henchman: DN (Sorry Tee Hee, but Professor Dent takes it)
    Overall Plot: DN
    Dialogue: DN
    Score: LALD
    Settings: DN
Action: LALD (can't beat the boat chase, and you have to count the gator run somewhere)
    Humour: DN
    Cinematography: DN
Benign Bizarre: LALD (it's certainly weird, and while it's just the least bit racist, it still edges DN)
    Suspense: DN
Minor Characters: DN (it's got the better Felix, and Quarrel blows Rosie and JW out of the water)
    Glamour: DN
    Bond Performance: DN

A stirring 12-5 win for Dr. No as it moves into the Moore years. How will it fare on your scorecards?

Alright lets see how this transpires. I haven't done a 2017 ranking yet for myself, but from my last ranking in 2016... DN was at #9, and LALD was at #5. So this could be a close one.

Title Track: LALD (McCartney's theme is still played on the radio every day, it is brilliant)
    Title Credits: LALD
Main Villain: LALD (Been a common theme on my comparisons, but I find DN very overrated. Joseph Wiseman is great, but very limited time and the fight scene is so quick it's over before you know it. Kanaga is played great by Kotto)
Main Bond Girl: LALD (Solitaire easily. Great character, and beautifully played by Seymour. Honey is another aspect of DN that I don't enjoy nearly as much as the general consensus)
Henchman: LALD (So many Baron, TeeHee, Whisper, Adam. LALD with ease)
Overall Plot: DN (Both solid, DN a little tighter)
    Dialogue: LALD
Score: LALD (George Martin's funky score fits and in some cases sets the tone of the film perfectly)
Settings: DN (Jamaica is so wonderfully pictured here)
Action: LALD (For the boat chase alone, but there is so much more here)
    Humour: LALD (With ease)
Cinematography: LALD (Love the boat chase from a technical standpoints. The shots from a helicopter showing a bird's eye view of the boats going through the bayou is magical for 1973)
    Benign Bizarre: LALD
    Suspense: LALD
Minor Characters: LALD (One of the biggest Sheriff Pepper fans. Quarrel is great, but Pepper along with a superior Leiter IMO, and Strutter does it)
    Glamour: DN
Bond Performance: LALD (Made a fresh new Bond for a new generation that stood out from Connery's Bond, which would have been an impossible task for most actors)

    DN: 3
    LALD: 14

Not close after all. DN by the elements is tough because the series didn't have the elements yet, so at least for my rankings I think DN will struggle vs many of the upcoming entries, even though I might enjoy it more.

    Title Track: LALD

Title Credits: LALD (love the voodoo, skulls, flames mixed with the title track.)

Main Villain: DN (kanaga/mr big is up there for bond villains but I love DN as a presence and his introduction and dinner scene is a highlight of early Connery.)

    Main Bond Girl: DN

Henchman: LALD (Tee hee, baron samedi and whisper are all great fun.)

    Overall Plot: DN

    Dialogue: DN

Score: LALD (one of my favourite non-Barry scores)

    Settings: DN

    Action: LALD

Humour: LALD (mainly for the line 'names is for tombstones baby' and Moore talking about the genesis of the hat on the bed)

    Cinematography: DN

    Benign Bizarre: LALD

    Suspense: DN

Minor Characters: DN (if I'm not counting the henchmen - samedi, whisper and tee hee- then I'm only left with Felix, quarrel jr and strutter, and I prefer original quarrel, original felix, miss taro and sisters rose and Lilly. Also LALD gets minus points for JW Pepper)

    Glamour: DN

    Bond Performance: DN

    DN: 10
    LALD: 7

Both in my top ten so pretty good showing for LALD.

    Margin out of 100: (DN-LALD)

Title Track: Live and Let Die (25-75)
One of the classics that still plays on the radio to this day.
Title Credits: Live and Let Die (40-60)
Appropriately themed between the plot of the film and the sound of the music.
    Main Villain: Dr. No (75-25)
A revolutionary villain, but also ill-conceived at times.
Main Bond Girl: Dr. No (55-45)
Two of the best and nearly on equal footing.
Henchman: Live and Let Die (15-85)
Collectively they are very entertaining and give Bond a run for his money.
    Overall Plot: Dr. No (85-15)
LALD lacks the clean delivery and grounding exhibited in DN.
    Dialogue: Dr. No (75-25)
The difference largely comes from the confrontations with the enemy.
Score: Live and Let Die (40-60)
Two of the weaker soundtracks imo, with the cues in LALD being tied together a little better to the title track.
    Settings: Dr. No (80-20)
It was better the first time.
    Action: Dr. No (60-40)
The boat chase is a major highlight, but LALD has some action sequences that count against it.
Humor: Live and Let Die (40-60)
Moore brings an air of lightness to the role with the aid of supporting cast.
    Cinematography: Dr. No (60-40)
Benign Bizarre: Live and Let Die (25-75)
    "Secret agent! On who's side?"
    Suspense: Dr. No (65-35)
    Minor Characters: Dr. No (60-40)
When comparing the casts, it becomes more apparent how LALD rehashed many of DN's elements; blustered by J.W..
    Glamor: Dr. No (65-35)
    Bond Performance: Dr. No (65-35)
Moore's first outing is a success, though falling short of one of Connery's classic portrayals.

Dr. No (11) (55-45) (6) Live and Let Die
