RIP Yaphet Kotto, such memorable performances both in our own Live and Let Die and Alien, one of my favourite films of all time.

I will definitely be seeking out Midnight Run.

There’s something very melancholy about the fact, as time marches on into the 2020s, that the 1970s begins to feel like a distant time. It was only a few years ago that we had so many stars and cultural icons still with us. The year 1970 is now 51 years ago. Half a century. I never stop to think about this fact, but Kotto’s passing really brings home the fact that all Bond villains 1962-1979 have now passed.

Very sad to hear of the death of Yaphet Kotto. One of the best, most intelligent and resourceful Bond villains.

Kotto's Dr Kananga was certainly a refreshing change after 11 years of SPECTRE being the main villains in the Bond films.

Sad to hear this. He was pretty active on his Facebook page sharing stories of his career and anecdotes about actors he'd worked with.
One of my favorite Bond villains in one of my favorite Bond films.

Damn, he played one of my favourite Bond villains. Was only watching LALD the other night, and had focused more on his performance this time around. I didn't know he was born in NYC, will have to keep that in mind with the next viewing. RIP Yaphet Kotto

It was instant love affair with the franchise for me thanks to Kotto and Moore. Still my favourite closely followed by CR.
  • RIP Yaphet Kotto!! :( one of the best Bond villains ever. One of my favorite actors growing up, LALD was the only Bond film I owned as a kid. Of course he was also excellent in Aliens.

Kotto was a consistently great actor. I encourage people who don't know as much about his work to check out his terrific performances in BONE (Larry Cohen's debut film as director) and ACROSS 110TH STREET.

    RIP Yahpet Kotto.

I heard the news at lunchtime. Very shocked to hear of his passing. I always look forward to his performances.

His villainous performance in LALD was superb. Very urbane, very sadistic.

There are some actors that when I think of them, the first word that comes to mind is "electrifying". Peter Falk is one of them. Yaphet Kotto is another. When Kotto played a role in a film, he didn't just play a role in a film, he was the star of his own movie, in which everyone else was a supporting character. Not every actor can do that as well as he did, that is, create a mini-universe out of his performance. When you watch Kotto as Kananga, he isn't the bad guy, Bond is. When he's playing Mosely, Jack Walsh isn't the protagonist, he is just an obstacle in Mosely's mission to bring in the Duke. When he's Parker, he isn't a token character waiting to die, he's Parker up against the alien. Remember how during the filming of that film he would say he wasn't going to die, the alien wasn't going to get him? That's what he brought to a role.

    RIP Yaphet Kotto

Yaphet Kotto is one of the main reasons LALD is in my top 10 Bond films and my favorite Moore entry. Immense actor with magnetic presence and without a doubt one of the best Bond villains. As others have said, he was hilarious in Midnight Run and had fabulous chemistry with De Niro. A great loss.

What a legendary loss. Rewatched Alien a few days back, he's always so larger than life and brings great comedic relief in it.

Around the early 2000s while Kotto was living in Toronto, my father met him unexpectedly when he came into a business he owned at the time. RIP Yaphet Kotto, a fantastic actor and memorable Bond villain.

Very. My dad instantly knew who he was and just said “Live and Let Die” and Kotto smiled and shook his hand.

That’s awesome. I thought he (Yaphet) said he wasn’t the fondest of LALD. I get where he coming from: he wasn’t the fondest of Tom Mankenwicz’s stereotype script, he said once.

RIP Yaphet Kotto, certainly one of the best Bond villains of the series. LALD has long been a mediocre entry for me. But in recent years, has jumped up my ranking's, thanks in no small part to Yaphet Kotto's Dr.Kananga. Such an energetic and powerful performance. Great actor.
I always felt he should've been utilized more on the screen. His resume seems like it should've have more entries on it. Perhaps this was a personal thing, but his talent will surely be missed.

Here in the US news stations played this sound clip today:
I'm telling you, go out to LA and clean it up
or I'm coming out there and clean you up. And I mean that!
Is this the stupid mother that tailed you uptown?

(There seems to be some mistake. My name...)

    Names is for tombstones, baby.
Y'all take this honky out and waste him - now!

Not sure that's the best way to remember the actor, writer, and director. It's great he's remembered all the same.
