He and Boyle (his director on Trainspotting, its sequel T2 and Shallow Grave) were employed on “Bond 25”, which subsequently became last year’s No Time to Die; they co-wrote a script before being sacked.
“I think it was me they really wanted rid of, but Danny took the bullet, too,” says Hodge. Do non-disclosure agreements cover their departure? “No. Just decent British discretion!”
At the time Hodge and Boyle learned they would not write another day, there were suggestions they had spooked the producers by pitching an incredibly subversive storyline. But the released movie contains a twist at least as dramatic, which seems to disprove the rumour they had gone too far. “My understanding was that that twist had been decided even before we came on board because Daniel Craig wanted it. I think, with us, it was that old cliche “creative differences”. It felt very dramatic at the time but it was just another bump in the road of the Bond franchise.”
Hodge still has his Bond script on a laptop. When he saw the movie, he found that “half a line” of his dialogue had survived. What is it? “Aaaargh, I can’t. It’s their film. I don’t want to seem like the guy who got paid and goes round telling stories about them.” He didn’t even tell his family what the half-line was. “Look, it’s the screenwriter’s life. If you’re lucky, you get a job, and sometimes that job doesn’t end well.”
That's a great picture!
Very sweet.
Good spot.
It's Safin's base.
I cannot help but notice that the name chosen for the little young lady is the same - but for variations in spelling - as the Natalie Portman character in Leon: The Professional, in 2008 film Mathilde, and in Matilda (which comes from a Roald Dahl book...yes, THAT Roald Dahl...perhaps he put the idea out there at some point ???)
Have any connections been acknowledged or even explained by EON or others ?
This is an image a friend shared with me - an early design of the incendiary bombs planted in the secret MI6 lab. In the trailer, we see a close-up of one opening up. This shot is missing from the film, but we do see them planted along the hallway, and shortly after, exploding consecutively.
The top section that pops up is shorter than what was shown in the trailer. The overall shape looks a bit like a thermos flask and has a black draw-string bag. Perhaps it was meant to be disguised as a thermos. That would be neat, keeping in line with the other thermos bombs seen in GF and AVTAK. Not sure what colour describes it best - maybe a brown or bronze - but I think the final prop was painted in a dark metallic steel. In the artwork you can vaguely see a cloud of gas surrounding the mid-section once it has opened up.

We received seven complaints regarding No Time to Die. These largely focused on the tone of the film and violence. We classified No Time to Die 12A for moderate violence and infrequent strong language. At 12A there may be moderate violence but it should not dwell on detail. There should be no emphasis on injuries or blood, but occasional gory moments may be permitted if justified by
the context. There may also be moderate physical and psychological threat and horror sequences.
Although some scenes may be disturbing, the overall tone should not be. In No Time to Die, there
are a number of scenes in which characters are threatened or are in danger, including in action and chase sequences, but these are not sustained and will be familiar to cinemagoers and fans of the Bond franchise. Scenes of violence include crunchy blows, an arm break and shootings, but these lack any focus on detail. There is occasional sight of injuries resulting from violence, including cuts and grazes, as well as sight of blood on faces, hands and clothing.
Who? That is my question. Who is filing these complaints? Overprotective parents? Moral hysterics? The dead corpse of Mary Whitehouse?
I particularly enjoyed this part:
Finally, four people wrote in complaining that the 12A-rated Eternals was a bit too fruity. “There is a single scene of sex in the film in which one character is lying on top of another, with some kissing and a woman’s cleavage visible. However this is brief and discreet in line with our Classification Guidelines and so is not strong enough to require a 15 rating”, responded the Board.
Oh no! Kissing women... Let's not expose our teenagers to the love between two people. Sweet Jebus! I'm glad the board doesn't seem to willing to bow to those ludicrous wishes. ;-)
Mum: "Not to worry darling. You'll get a new James Bond for the next one."
12 year old: "Well, ok. I guess that's fine..."
Mum: "Those crunchy blows, however... no, I shall have to report this to BBFC."
"Mama! Look, that little girl was holding a gun and shot the masked man, it's cool! If I could be like that too, mama." 😅
"That's bad! Children should not allowed to hold a gun?, right, I shall report this to BBFC."
