@boldfinger Well it does rather suggest that people are being entertained. Are you suggested that they weren't really?

Sting was offered the role of Max Zorin at one point, after Bowie and before Walken.

    Yikes! A bullet dodged!

I got into Bond pre-Brosnan, so for me part of the appeal was the amazing array of cars over the years, from the icon that was the DB5, to the ludicrously brilliant 2CV, and everything in between. If there’s one thing I’ve really missed over the last 20 years it’s those idiosyncratic choices of vehicle that really add a distinct flavour.

If I could choose to leave the DB5 in 1965, I would. But we are where we are. I reckon this chase could be a cracker, but my preference going forward would be to really mix it up.

I can agree with this. The 2CV was well used in FYEO, or the Alfa Romeo GTV6 in OP.
It would be nice to see Bond in a 'normal' car, besides the product placement of a Ford Mondeo in CR.
However, I find cars nowadays are somewhat boring. Often looking similar to any other brand on the road. Still there has to be opportunity to stick Bond behind the wheel of something other than an Aston Martin.

It’s a great point @Benny and something I’ve thought about. I think you’d have to go classic and work it into the story. Although there are ways to make it work, even if it’s modern high-end vehicles that aren’t AM, or even the more obscure everyday vehicles. It wouldn’t have worked in the context of the SP chase, but having Craig in the Fiat 500 would certainly be distinctive.

    2. Yes. PanchitoPistoles provided a perfectly reasonable explanation as to why it doesn't make sense in the context of the movie.

I asked him to and he certainly didn't! :)

He still does occasionally. In Quantum of Solace alone I think he drives a Volvo, a Range Rover, a Ford Edge. Skyfall he drives the Jag of course, whatever he tails the baddie in Shanghai in etc.

    Nah :(

About the DB5, I'm just glad I'm one of the ones who loves it, because it's been Craig's Pegasus throughout his tenure, and we're getting an iconic chase with it in NTTD. I'm very, very happy.

me too! Love the car so much. Always happy to see it. And yes, when Bond opens the garage in SF, there was applause in every showing I went to.

Totally off topic, but every time someone mentions applause and/or cheering during a screening of a film, I'm truly surprised. I've never once, at all, experienced any kind of reactions to a film while it was playing – in any cinema I've been to. Is this a thing everywhere?

I attend a lot of screenings in Belgium, on average one or two every week, and I have rarely experienced applause. A few notable exceptions:
    • Episode III in 2005, at the start of the movie!
    • Casino Royale in 2006 during the gun barrel shot
    • Skyfall (yes, indeed)
    • Captain Marvel last year (again, at the start, when Stan Lee was praised)
    • Avatar in 2009
    • Endgame
    • ... and The Mummy Returns in 2001 because I was literally the only person in the entire theatre ;-)

Also had applause at a Skyfall screening (at exactly that moment), but also a short one at the midnight screening of Spectre when Bond takes off his mask. But then again, Kinepolis Ghent was packed to the brim with Bond fans who hadn't had a new film in three years. So we were giddy.

I experienced such a situation just yesterday, when DiCaprio uses the flamethrower in that scene in Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood. When I saw SP in London I remember people goin totally crazy when the TFA trailer played. Gosh, we need a NTTD teaser as soon as possible.

Interesting. I've been to some of those other films too, but on every occasion…nothing. If someone started cheering at any point during the films, someone would no doubt have told them to shut the f*** up, haha!

    Cultural differences, perhaps.

From that standpoint, why cheer during a sporting event, if you're in the pub? The players can't hear you.

Some of my most memorable sports moments occurred in a bar, with the energy of fans, going crazy. It's about a collective outpouring of emotion. Same thing happens in theaters. This is why collective laughter makes something funnier; why collective shrieking makes something scarier.

I didn't experience any applause for the DB5 in SF. But I did during the gun barrel in SP, and that got me so pumped.

I think this taps into what @Benny was saying about them all being reasonably generic, though. Stick him in a red E-Type that he casually steals, or on the opposite end of the scale, smashing up a Ford Transit as his only means to get away - now we’re talking.

@RC7 That's unnecessary. I don't get your point: a big luxury 4x4 doesn't look like a small saloon car. The bright yellow 2CV was different to other cars and that's the role it played, but I'm not convinced most cinema goers could really tell the Alfa GTV6 from any other then-current car more than those of ten years ago could tell a Mercedes limo from an off-roader.

I think I'm ready for a really inventive gadget too. A watch that's a bomb, a shoe with an emergency radio, or a car with machine guns in it... yeah, that's good and everything; but I want a watch that turns into a buzzsaw and a super magnet! Something.. unexpected.

When I’m imagining my reign as Bond I always imagine me sat down with Babs, Michael and Aston boss Andy Palmer, having a conversation about how I want my Bond to be known for Green Aston’s or perhaps Blue. I’ve always thought they could’ve come away from silver and grey. I get the argument that silver is probably the most inconspicuous for a spy but then an effing Aston is one of the biggest head turners there is so it’s a redundant argument imo.

It would be nice to see Bond in a 'normal' car, besides the product placement of a Ford Mondeo in CR.

He still does occasionally. In Quantum of Solace alone I think he drives a Volvo, a Range Rover, a Ford Edge. Skyfall he drives the Jag of course, whatever he tails the baddie in Shanghai in etc.

I think this taps into what @Benny was saying about them all being reasonably generic, though. Stick him in a red E-Type that he casually steals, or on the opposite end of the scale, smashing up a Ford Transit as his only means to get away - now we’re talking.

    I don't really follow. I don't think a Volvo S40 looks like a Range Rover or a big Mercedes S Class.

You get my point. You’re being pedantic.

If Bond had been in the S40 for an epic chase, yeah, I’m all for that. He wasn’t, so it isn’t comparable.
