I wouldn’t call it a debate @Pierce2Daniel, I think we can all agree how most of the media has treated this particular entry, and of course there was positivity. I must’ve missed the overwhelming positivity, but it in no way makes all the opposing views redundant, and not worth considering as a player in the film’s success. I don’t know really what people think I’m trying to push here? I was just responding to someone’s question about why the media haven’t wrote more articles about the Bond’s future casting, and that was my response.

On Reddit the female 007 was heavily criticised and some YouTube video complained too

Interesting. It's not like "Reddit" or "YouTube" represent the ticket-buying masses, of course, but that's certainly interesting. And as for YouTube, for every video telling us how awesome THE MATRIX is, there's also a video explaining "everything that's wrong with" THE MATRIX. Sometimes I think it's merely action-reaction, rather than legitimate opinions being posted by people who mean well. If ten videos will tell you that Lashana's involvement is great, another ten will soon bash her involvement. I don't know what to think of these videos. More than half the time, people's arguments are either non-existent or ridiculous anyways. Again, I doubt the most general of audiences out there, people who know of this James Bond but who couldn't tell you which film had which actor in it, care one way or the other.

Selection bias, I'd say. The sort of people who care enough to script, film, and upload a 10-minute video complaining about gender in Star Wars or James Bond definitely do not represent the average movie-goer.

They're more often drawn from the extremes of gushing praise or frothy outrage, but precious little in the middle.

I agree, and most of them aren't even Bond fans or know anything about the franchise.

This is spot on. Most of the complaints I saw were from people who openly said "I don't even like Bond movies, I just think this way of hiring women in place of men for male roles is wrong"

One YouTuber known as Midnight’s Edge framed it as the filmmakers “emasculating” Bond because of addressing #MeToo, and then would refer to things like “he’s known for slapping women” as if this is what Bond regularly does in the films. He was clearly just trying to play to his fan base because he knows they’re mostly a bunch of misogynist incels that easily get upset.

Yeah, the point about these YouTubers' audiences are something to bear in mind. A lot of movie reviewer YouTubers' audiences are more right leaning, while the film critic/journalism community (on Twitter in particular) and film sites/blogs audiences are more left-leaning. And everyone's just playing to their audiences - especially the YouTubers.

The question of which side will have an impact on the films' success is a different debate entirely. But if the last few years of box office proved anything is that 'diversity' can serve as a box office boost - in North America in particular - for films that people are excited about. But it won't boost a film people aren't already hyping/aware of, or just plain disinterested in regardless. And as for the 'boycott' crowd, yeah they won't have an impact at all.

Lea's already a fairly known name in French and European cinema, not exactly the 'next generation of stars' THR wanted to present. So it's not like, say, a NTTD cover for Empire.

By the way, in case anyone was wondering, THR in the piece do all but confirm the Nomi as 007 rumour.

This reporter woman is obviously deep into the Bond lore lol...
I don't even care if she knows this stuff or not, but if she doesn't, why post it then?

Good interview overall. One or two cringy tidbits here and there, but oh, well.
Glad to hear the intimacy coordinator was just media BS.

It's doubtful but who knows. I do remember DC wearing his CR wardrobe for a photo shoot with Eva in 2006. I believe the sweater (and t-shirt) and slacks are what Bond was wearing on the balcony with Mathis:

She remains one of the most glamorous, beautiful and intelligent Bond girls overall. One of the critical improvements of CR over the previous few films is Vesper. They got that character right in all her aspects.
  • Lynch says creating her Bond character was about working with Waller-Bridge and Fukunaga to shape a real woman. "I didn't want someone who was slick. I wanted someone who was rough around the edges and who has a past and a history and has issues with her weight and maybe questions what's going on with her boyfriend," she says.

  • "[Paloma] is a character that is very irresponsible," says de Armas. "She's got this bubbliness of someone who is excited to be on a mission, but she plays with this ambiguity — you don't really know if she's like a really trained, prepared partner for Bond." Sure, de Armas is running around in a gorgeous gown with sky-high heels ("No one can train you or prepare you for that," she says), but she adds that "brains and looks are equal this time. She's very smart. She helps Bond navigate through certain things that he wouldn't be able to do alone."
Paloma running in high heels is gonna be fun, haha.

    Interesting……

I’m at a total loss as to who the Paloma character is. She isn’t a femme fatale by the sounds of it. Neither is she the villain’s girl who Bond liberates. So………what is she?

It sounds as if Paloma is going to be a ‘bubbly girl who gets drawn into the mission.’ Sounds a bit lame. She could be a society girl who gets roped into the mission somehow? Sorta like a Kim Kardashian figure.

Also, the tampon thing sounds bad. It sounds like something in Fleabag - in the worst possible sense.

Agreed, i hope it doesn't make the cut.

Paloma sounds like an agent. What else would she do in Cuba of all places?
And she has been saying she's going to kill/fight bad guys so she has training.

    Just a guess though.
But i like the idea of her having sky high heels. Maybe they are not going for ultra realism with every character here, which i would welcome.

Finally sounds we all agree on! I would be disgusted to see that in a Bond film it isn't necessarily at all the whole you know what thing the t word.

She could be a station agent or contact, similar to Fields. But, you know......actually trained. Not there to get involved but ends up involved anyway.
