Is piracy that big a concern? I know its a problem, but will it seriously dent a film's box office that severely? People will still turn up to see a film - especially older folk who don't know how to work computers.
Is piracy really that widespread in China?
It's pretty rampant. Chinese authorities have been working hard to crack down on it over the last while but it's a very difficult thing to tackle. It would have ultimately depended on how long that delay would have been. If you're talking a couple of weeks, it wouldn't have any more of an impact than the week between the UK and US release dates. But anything over a month and I think you would see a difference.
We'll see how Mulan turns out on this front, but I think Eon made the right call in the end.
A very interesting predicament, whatever way you look at it!
How effective is delaying a release in certain markets if you don’t know when they’ll be open for business and you may not get to reschedule because of pre-slated competition? A delay in China may have been tenable, but China plus the rest of South East Asia, the Middle East and parts of Europe is not.
Also, Mulan’s tracking in the US is really good now but what if LA or NY close theaters? What if whole states shut down large gatherings?
EON made the right decision. It was hard but right.
Also, we’re all assuming that Disney isn’t moving Mulan because they’re staying the course. From what I understand, Disney would be in a litigation/contractual nightmare with theater chains if they pull Mulan at this point.
I agree on the basis there are too many NTTD threads with the same things being discussed.
That they've delayed NTTD and not other films such as Mulan, does lead me to believe the decision was more content-based than theatre-closure based... very interesting.
You're right, this isn't going to happen, but I think it's a very good idea.
I remember watching a promotional 15 minute film from Marvel with Hayley Atwell. Something similar could be done with Bond, a short film with some low-key action.
The problem is - Bond retired after the events from SP, and that leaves less room for coming up with an interesting concept. Perhaps doing something with Lynch as Nomi could work.
Anyway, it's not happening, I'm just thinking out loud.
Did they really do that? I didn't realise they had time for that.
The dummies? :D
If you mean the movies, I didn't think we were talking about that far back. I suspect it was made easier when they did four in a row in four years by the scripts being fairly closely based on novels which had their plots all worked out for them. Thunderball even started out as a movie script in the first place! :)
Why do you think You Only Live Twice -the first one not to be an adaptation of the book- took an extra year?
Blade Runner 2049 had some cool ones, too.
A 90-second attempt at that from an acclaimed British director is dropping this Sunday ;)
Also, quick reminder that the Total Film cover story still comes out tomorrow...
Must say I'm quite keen to see that. There's not been much more information released other than a title and a few tidbits, has there? No release date even?
I still haven't seen BR 2049, unfortunately. I wanted to rewatch part 1 first, but I haven't got round to it yet.
Yeah, but that's just a commercial. :D
Yeah, no release date yet though.
Had a few minutes free. Top box office gross adjusted for inflation: TB (December release); then GF (Sept. and Dec. UK and U.S.); then SF (Oct./Nov). I saw hardly any that came out in an April. FRWL came out in the UK October 63 and did come out in the U.S. the next April. YOLT June 67. OHMSS December 69. CR, QoS and SP either late Oct or Nov. TLD and LTK were June/July releases. MR, FYEO, OP and AVTAK May/June. TSWLM July.
Yeah, I just thought with seven months to spare something like this would be a good idea. I wouldn't be worried about the timeline issue. It probably wouldn't alter any Adaptation of the QoS story anyway. But yeah, it's obviously not going to happen.
But in the grand scheme of things, this is a blip. There are more important things going on in the world right now.
Be safe everyone.

Nomi spin-off.......something more grounded and London based? Anyone? I would definitely watch that.

Nope, no release date. Maybe I’m overthinking this, but maybe the whole delay includes this documentary? If it truly is an overview on Craig’s career as Bond and not a look back, there might be some NTTD spoilers present. Which means this documentary might always have been intended to launch a few months after NTTD. And in the current situation, that means January or February. And they couldn’t say that at the event, because then the public knew something was up with the release date of the film, because releasing a film in April and an overview documentary almost a year later would’ve been a strange thing to announce. That’s my theory why they didn’t mention a release date: to not set off any alarm bells before the announcement a day later.
We’ll see, but if there are spoilers for NTTD in there, it’s a long way off. If not, it would be the ideal waiting present for the fans.
You’ll make that back in your sleep in Asia. On a spreadsheet they stood to loose $300-400 million
@Pierce2Daniel Hope you're not serious now? That's Nokias new ad (drops march 8). Nokia has a sponsorship with EON and Nomi will have a new Nokia smartphone plus 5G handset in NTTD
In fact would have been more like 150-200, remember only half the box office earnings go to the distributor...still cost benefit analysis of pressing on vs delaying makes sense.
I suppose the difference being that NTTD had already pushed dozens of tv spots and posters. And we all know the movie is ready to go.
Also, the biological plot must be quite prominent in this film.
