    First of all, I have watched the entire NGE series, read the manga and listened to the scores many times. Huge fan. This one track, when used in the series, has so far never cried FRWL to me.

    That said, this wouldn't be uncommon for the Japanese animators. Several anime use elements from Western pop culture, and not even in a hidden way. NGE, for example, closes every episode with a different version of 'Fly Me To The Moon'.

    I still wouldn't call it theft or anything. Listen to the anime track in isolation. It's absolutely not "007".

    Interesting. The similarity at the beginning is pretty close, though I wouldn't be able to say whether it was consciously done or by accident (certainly a possibility).

    That reminds me John Barry himself basically quotes the four-note horn motif of Bernard Herrmann's Cape Fear in TMWTGG, when Goodnight is placing the tracking device on Scaramanga's car.
