At least he's honest
That’s interesting. I wonder how that discussion went.
Martin comments he wasn't happy with the music from the composer, Eric Serra. After pursuing 4 other composers starting with John Barry. With Serra, it couldn't be redone due to schedule and budget.
Specific to the tank chase music, Martin relates as sound it was in the same register as the tanks themselves, it disappeared when played with the action. He says Eric suggested lower the effects as the solution--end of conversation according to Martin.
So Martin approached Eric's assistant with the assignment that over the weekend he engage the Bond theme written to key in on brass and percussion with the full Bond sound. And he did.
Martin likes what he got, and he calls it out as disparate from the rest of the soundtrack. Mentioned a couple times he wasn't happy with the film music otherwise.
Famke says they're required for a Bond film, and fun to play.
Martin says in the later films he misses the humor. Famke agrees, greatly enjoys the humor aspect.
Famke apologizes.
That's very interesting stuff, thanks. The stuff about it being in a similar register to the sound effects I hadn't thought about.
Problem with censors toward the end, censors wouldn't allow headbutts. (Famke protests--why was the head butt to her head then allowed?)
Limits on blood shown for Bean's death, censors.
Leap to the helicopter--Simon Crane missed. Complications with matching sun and other conditions as well.
Martin comments on the cheesy end song, then says he'll stop commenting on it.
