Martin on essentially handling two reboots establishing new actors in the Bond role.
Noting GoldenEye came after a 6 year gap. Pulling the Bond films into the 90s. Pierce and others involved working to overcome the challenge for whether Bond was out of date.
Casino Royale, in part a reaction to Die Another Day and invisible cars, ice palace, parasailing. Starting to lose it, producers knowing they had gone too far.
With the rights to the book, went in knowing they had to completely reboot. Much more like the books, he says. Grittier. Darker, more serious. And the great thing was the love story element to it.
She responds, absolutely amazing. The opportunity changed everything. Opened many doors. Very grateful for the leap of faith by Martin and others to choose her for the role. Then afterward working against typecasting, she's not actually a Russian villainess in real life.

Martin has trouble singling one out--the whole experience is that to him.
Coming after No Escape with Ray Liotta. Taking on the pressures of budget, schedule, multiple international filming locations. It helped the cast was fantastic with Pierce, Famke, Izabella. Great cast, everyone got on well.
Barbara Broccoli so very protective of her actresses. Producers being given a lot of leeway--"These two are fantastic" he says.
Think of one scene--he defaults to say the whole thing.
Same question for Famke.
Same difficulty. She says she felt the pressure that every scene be so good was consistent through filming. The casino scene with Pierce, so iconic a moment. The spa scene. Such an outrageous character--beginning to end, didn't let up. So impossible to single out one.
She recalled filming the scene in bed with the general. Being so shy, but playing a character so over the top crazy. The set was built on stilts. A closed set, but she looked over and down to see "all the crew guys eating sandwiches and looking up at her."
Martin says when you're working on it, you're in a capsule. Doing your best, you cocoon yourself from distractions and focus.
Comments bring up the crazy idea Brosnan couldn't drive a stick shift (I recall that for Craig, not Brosnan), when his character is bungee jumping in the film almost straight off.
Quickly recalls the crazy tabloid stuff for Craig. Bond can't be blond. Looks like Putin.
This worked very well I thought, only a few technical or presentation issues. Very impressed with their enthusiasm and engagement 25 years on, they almost look like they just filmed it.
Ready to continue these for other Bond films as well.

The Mendes films have more jokes than the two before them, one of which Campbell directed.

One thing regarding the Eric Serra conversation is that Campbell does more or less say that he picked Serra and he thought he would be an interesting choice after Leon.
He looks about 40.... incredible how this man hasn't aged. He is almost 80 now!
Spielberg, Polanski, Allen, Verhoeven, Scorcese, Scott, lots of directors of his generation are still making movies, so why cant Campbell direct the next Bond?
