It replaces the Bond theme for most of the film, and you barely notice. It's that damn good.
Da, Comrade General! YOLT should have been nominated... Goldfinger is truly iconic ... but I must admit to a bit of a prejudice here: Paul McCartrney's "Live And Let Die" for the win!
• Carly Simon for Nobody Does it Better from The Spy Who Loved Me.
• Shirley Bassey for Goldfinger from Goldfinger
• Adele for Skyfall from Skyfall
• Chris Cornell for You Know My Name from Casino Royale
These choices are insane. A major “BOO” to @dove for forcing us choose just one 😊.
My admiration for Macca (and Linda) is well documented on these boards, but my vote – given these choices – is “GOLDFINGER.” My late mother was a major Bassey fan and I saw Dame Shirley perform this live at New York’s Carnegie Hall on several occasions. So in keeping with Mom’s wishes…..
Interestingly, the winner of the recently completed Song Elimination thread – Nancy Sinatra’s YOLT – isn’t among the choices listed. That only goes to show just how many great theme songs there have been.
BTW: Off the Wall Dream – have all of the living Bond theme song performers play their respective tunes live in concert - together. EON, the balls in your court!
You Only Live Twice would have gotten my vote as well. Classic Academy snub! ;)
I don't think it's just having Barry involved as I don't think All Time High really feels too Bondish either.
The gold standard in 007 title songs
LALD May be the most musically groundbreaking but its lyrics are nothing to write home about.
YOLT’s lyrics have an ominous and mysterious quality about them that complement perfectly the exquisite music. The lyrics are vague enough without being silly.
I may add that DAF would have also been a prime candidate for best song as its lyrics are also among the best in the Bond canon and it features Bassey’s most accomplished vocal performance out of her 3 Bond themes.
But I guess only one Bassey song was allowed and obviously it had to be the most iconic of all.
As always I enjoy some controversy with this thread! Thanks for the thoughts and ideas! If you have a Bondie or Klebbie idea please PM me. Keep it to 5 candidates in order to have a challenge for the academy!
My choice is Goldfinger. There is nothing like Shirley Bassey singing "ONLY GOLD!", with the Bond theme going completely nuts in the background. Truly exhilarating.
YOLT’s lyrics are lovely, but DAF’s are a bit silly I think.
Good observation... all other songs owe a lot to some combination of these six. The other ones that truly stand out are We Have All the Time in the World (although not a main theme), GoldenEye (a huge update in sound production), and Die Another Day (everything about it).
@thedove. Don't worry. We're in your debt for putting these things together and allowing us to spout off :-).
Live and Let Die by Paul McCartney and the Wings with 7 votes
Nobody Does it Better by Carly Simon with 7 votes
Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey with 6 votes (I will admit to a bias dear academy members so I am including it in our tie breaker vote. Since I can't vote as the nominating committee I am allowed this small advantage!)
So who will take the Best Song! You are all allowed to re-vote again. But we know can only chose from the top three songs!
The one from the Bond theme song superdiva:
Goldfinger by Shirley Bassey
