After all these years, they've become old friends having a laugh at work.
My write-in nominee would be TB with Q in tropical climate clothes, introducing a number of gadgets and perfect comedy timing between Connery and Llewelyn. OP would be my second nominee in Q's India workshop as he and Moore have are at a peak there.
GF is fast becoming the favorite here, but I can't go for that as the playfulness is mostly on Connery's side and Llewelyn is just a tad stiff and too deadpan. It was introduced here and perfected in following films.
In GE, the chemistry's good between Brosnan and Llewelyn, but the jokes are poor. I'm very tempted to vote for SF as I really like seeing Craig doing the witty banter with Whishaw. But I can't do that to the original Q.
I never thought I'd ever pick TWINE to have a superlative for anything, but of these nominees, I can't forget that final Bond-Q meeting that has a great blend of humor and sentimentality with that haunting final exit, made even more poignant in that he'd pass away just a few weeks later. I pick TWINE.
I do quite like that, but I think Llewelyn is, to be honest, pretty bad in that scene. He's even clearly reading it off cards! Pierce is in full smug mode too.
I think I'd give honourable mentions to the Living Daylights one (I think Llewelyn is good in that one, I rather like the gags, and it doesn't outstay its welcome); and to be honest although it's amongst the silliest, the Octopussy one is quite enjoyable because Roger is at his most like a little schoolboy and Q at maximum schoolteacherish: it's sort of like the most extreme version they've ever done with the most groan-worthy gags (and one even stolen from Casino Royale!), but if you're in the right frame of mind it's rather charming. Apart from the leering at a girl's tits of course!
Of the noms though, I will give honourable mention to the Skyfall one as it's fresh and sparky and gives new life to Q. The TWINE one... I dunno, I think it's one of the worst. He taught him to "never let them see you bleed"? When?! :D
But yeah, I'll go with Goldfinger too. Connery is lovely and subtle in it, and there's lots to enjoy.
Agreed on both counts, re GE poor old Des is clearly reading his lines and Brossa is very smugly annoying (hate thst moment he is messing with the laptop!)
Also agree on TLD, i would second that, well written scene ("you dont find many normal people in this business Q!")
Ooh there's a good potential category for a future Klebbie: Most Distracting Bit of Product Placement! :D They literally just stop the scene dead so they can advertise the new IBM laptop- there's not even a joke there!
TWINE is the weakest with a nomination. Good and emotional ending but the rest is a bit disappointing.
GF is very good, no doubt. My favourite Q scene with Connery is the one from TB, great fun!
My two favourites are GE and SF. I'm not even sure for which one I voted in my poll but I usually go with the one from GE. Loved it as a teenager and still works perfect for me now. Not annoying at all for me.
I even find the ending a bit weird. I remember my friend seeing it and describing it as 'a scared-looking old man being lowered into a pit' :D
Heh! I do love his reaction to Q when he walks in: it's obvious that the Q scene in Goldfinger was felt to have an impact straight away as this was only a year later.
This deserves an eventual future round of five ONLY Desmond Llewelyn Q choices.
Excellent idea @RichardTheBruce I shall queue it up in our line-up. Recently watching TB and I had forgotten how loud Q's tropical shirt is. I also liked his socks and shoes in YOLT. He looks rightly peeved to come out to Japan and takes great offence to Tiger calling it a toy! Good stuff there.
All of the M/Moneypenny/Q scenes in OHMSS are simply...perfect.
"What would I do without you, Miss Moneypenny? Thank you."
"Miss Moneypenny, what would you do without me?"
On the other hand, if write-ins are allowed I'd say uncle Q's visit in LTK is a highlight. One of the things I love about LTK is how much Q we get. Love that first scene: If it hadn't been for Q Branch you'd been dead long ago.
And this priceless one:
Bond to Pam: Pam, meet Q, my uncle.
Bond to Q: Q, meet Pam, my cousin.
Q: Aaah, we must be related.
I watched Twine 24 days after his death.
But let i for another one: Q in Moonraker on the side of the road. The stroyman.
Although I did see someone point out recently that Q was giving Government equipment to a civilian in that, and basically being an accomplice to murder! :) Quite how he kept his job I don't know...
I also very much like their scene in TB.
You clearly see that Bond enjoys testing Q’s patience in that one and both actors’ play off each other beautifully.
Yes, great points. It seemed like the momentum was strong, to keep going, they were hungry.
I'll expand on that when you consider many of the musicians of the time such as the Beatles, who seemed to be cranking out great music in short periods of time constantly. I guess this kind of lends itself to the saying they don't make 'em like they used to.
There's something about all of Q's scenes with his extended role in LTK in the sense we've seen how far their friendship has grown since that classic scene in GF which will probably win and for good reason.
I'm casting my vote for a write in:
OP-where Bond and Q ride in the hot air balloon with the Union Jack and Q saves Magda and company with the hot air balloon and receives a welcome embrace from her "Later, perhaps."
I'll also express an appreciation for that poignant moment in TWINE. "You're not retiring anytime soon... are you?" There is an emotional connection between the viewer and the character of Q that has had years to build up, and in that scene, it is gratifyingly and gracefully allowed to come to the surface for just the right amount of time. It also creates a perfect transition into the next scene, with Bond studying Elektra King's sad backstory.
