One of the problems with Craig's Bond is when they do that thing where girls ogle him, it's never convincing to me. I can't see his rugged sexiness, because I'm a heterosexual bloke.

I'm a fellow heterosexual bloke, and I can see Craig's rugged sexiness with complete clarity.

Craig's sex appeal as Bond is not specifically in his looks but in the way he carries himself that makes it believable that he'd attract the opposite sex that way. There's a certain undeniable concoction of attitude, confidence, and swagger he projects that feels very raw and hasn't really been seen in a Bond since Connery. That's not to put down the other actors. Moore was great in the part as he shaped it, but I never saw "sex appeal" as being a major attribute of his, and that's okay because where he lacked in that department he made up for it with dry wit and charm. Dalton was not playing up cinematic Bond anyway, so it's not like he tried and failed. Brosnan, like Moore, is more about being a smooth operator, a pretty looking guy who looks like he belongs in gentleman's clubs and model ads. And Lazenby was a male model who's acting career never flourished, enough said.

Just to give an anecdote, my mother was actually initially against Daniel Craig in the role of Bond when he was announced. She used to proclaim "there's no such thing as a blonde James Bond" even though she wasn't even that big of a fan of Bond, having given a few a watch in the past. When I got the DVD, somehow someway I convinced her to give it a watch because she had come to trust in my taste in films. 15 minutes in, she is not only completely sold by Craig in the role but he instantly became her favorite Bond, noting how much of a hunk he was. Since then we've caught Craig's Bond films in theaters, and look forward to his last hurrah in NTTD.

How does age factor into this? They each played the role at different times of their life. Do we compare them at the same age, or just at the age they debuted as Bond?

Connery, while one of the most handsome at age 30, would be the least handsome at age 40-50 (the age at which a few of the other actors played the role).

Moore might rank differently in people's lists if he had started the role several years earlier.

I'd say in their forties, both Moore and Brosnan are the best looking,,especially since they looked younger than their age. Connery was the best looking overall when cast. In DAF he was maybe the worst looking Bond. For all the hostility Craig received when cast, I think he looked great and pretty much how I'd expect Bond to look: ruggedly handsome, but not overly noticeable (he's a spy after all) if that makes sense.

The way Fleming described Bond in MOONRAKER actually seems pretty fitting for Craig.

"And what could the casual observer think of him, ‘Commander James Bond, GMG, RNVSR,’ also ‘something at the Ministry of Defence,’ the rather saturnine young man in his middle thirties sitting opposite the Admiral? Something a bit cold and dangerous in that face. Looks pretty fit. [...] Tough-looking customer. Doesn’t look the sort of chap one usually sees in Blades.

Bond knew that there was something alien and un-English about himself. He knew that he was a difficult man to cover up. Particularly in England."

It's a weird one, this. Handsome or pretty? Not the same thing, after all. Er, so I'm told. ;)
Handsome - Dalton. Pretty - Brosnan.
Bond I'd most like to look like: Connery (DN/FRWL).

I asked my Mrs this question as we were re watching the series before NTTD.
She put them in this order
    Craig
    Connery (up to Thunderball)
    Brosnan
    Dalton
    Moore
    Lazenby

She said Craig and Connery are alpha males which is more sexy than being pretty, she thought Sir Roger was charming like a grandpa rather than someone you'd fancy and of Lazenby she said "how ugly were models in the 60's?" Oh and she laughed a bit at Tim's hair in the casino scene in LTK and said the hairdresser let him down

I've got to say I've always thought Craig and Connery were the coolest and Pierce was probably the best looking (I mean the guy looks like a model) the other Bond's fit the time they were in I guess

Yeah, if there's one of them you'd want to be, it's Connery every time. Perfect combination of looks, danger, swagger, humour, charm and drive.

Pierce is probably the most handsome. At the very least, the most "pretty boy" of the Bond actors. Roger is more classically handsome I would say. Witty, charming, and easy on the eyes.

I agree with the others who say that Craig and Connery, being more ruggedly handsome, are attractive because of the swagger and charisma that they exude. That's the whole package for Bond looks, in my opinion. Craig, despite not being the "tall, dark, and handsome" Bond still fits the image I see with Connery. So with that I say Craig and Connery are equally confident and charismatic and that makes them perhaps the most overall attractive of the Bonds.

George and Tim are harder to rank. Tim is certainly handsome, but he also did the darker, menacing vibe well. Somewhere between Brosnan and Connery I'd say. Less on the ruggedness but still with a confident demeanor.

Young George reminds me a bit of Cary Grant, but with something missing. I don't think anybody would kick him out of bed, but he didn't come with the same assuredness to complete the package.

Most to least physically attractive to me:

    1. Sean Connery
    2. Pierce Brosnan
    3. Roger Moore
    4. George Lazenby
    5. Daniel Craig
    6. Timothy Dalton

I’m a broken record: the most handsome 007 (as in James Bond), has to go to:
Dalton. The man looked like a deadly fox. He has great eyes, a perfect nose, strong jaw. Apart from the slicked-back hair in the casino in LTK, the man is one helluva handsome man (too bad his physique veered towards the unathletic (his chest looked like a 12 year old boy’s; he was broad but had no shoulders and lacked any definition in the arms… )

Sexy is different than handsome and that mantle goes to Connery pre ‘67 and Craig. And running in a distant third is Lazenby— he wasn’t particularly good looking and in some scenes was quite unattractive… but he had a clumsy swagger that I can see would have been appealing to some of the fairer sex.

I certainly never wanted to be Moore-Bond as a child, although he looks like a kindly gent: unthreatening but a genuine warmth.

Brozz is a cheesy-looking poster-boy, in my eyes (and before the knives come out, it’s just my opinion and I’m not saying that to rile anyone up; just one of the reasons I could never get into his portrayal)

I'd say Connery looked great in his first four Bond movies.

Such a subjective topic. As a lassy it's got to be Craig or Connery in the role. They both exude such undeniable manliness about them. They're both handsome though Craig's are non-traditional. That's all made up for in the way he carries himself in the role, kind of like his Bond knows it and doesn't care. Craig is very Steve McQueen, he probably idolises him. Anyway, the point is, it's devastating what confidence can do.

If we go purely aesthetically then Brosnan's Bond is very attractive but for me I prefer him now as a silver fox. He's a bit too pretty otherwise and in the role I felt he lacked the swagger. After that it would be Dalton, then Connery, Craig, Lazenby, Moore.

Purely aesthetics, it would be this ranking -

    1. Brosnan - pretty boy like Beckham, great hair.
    2. Moore - similar to Brozza in conventional handsome
    3. Connery pre 67
    4. Dalton
    5. Lazenby
    6. Craig - odd looking, big ears, not conventional handsome at all.

Masculinity/sex appeal (dubious area covering this topic from a male perspective, but I'll give it a go)

    1. Connery - by a country mile
    2. Lazenby - like Connery, swagger, over confidence, natural magnet to women (so we are told)
    3. Craig - has that sex appeal that the ladies swoon for (so we are told)
    4. Moore
    5. Brosnan
    6. Dalton

The Bond you would want to be, the one you imitate when walking out of the cinema has to be Connery, then probably Brosnan or Moore.

And funny enough, after watching the more human Bonds - Laz, Craig and Dalton, I never try to imitate or walk or act like any of these (I can only admit that here on a Bond forum ;) ). They play flawed human characters rather than the superhuman cool swagger of Connery in his prime, which is much more appealing to imitate.

It's funny, from my personal experience (and it is what it is) women in general find Craig far more attractive than men. Which makes me think: 1)we underestimate masculinity when it's time to establish attractiveness and 2)men are poor at assessing women's tastes.

Perhaps a little of both. 😛
