This game has so much potential, not just to be a great Bond game but maybe the best. I’m anxious as hell to see it.

@FoxRox, it's also great to have a Bond game to mull us over between Bond movies and eras, as a sort of gap filler to give our energy to. Makes you miss the old days where Bond games were far more regular fare, even if the quality was hit or miss.

Definitely. Seems likely the game will drop sometime before whenever we get Bond 26. Of course I know it's sacrilege to even suggest something could top GoldenEye 64, but something more story-oriented and strong of a campaign would be more up my alley. I love GoldenEye, but for me it's really more about the multiplayer than the campaign. I haven't played a ton of other ones; the DS, PS2, and Wii versions of QOS (didn't care for them much), some of Nightfire which I liked. But that middle era on the GameCube/PS2 did seem to be the best for quality and quantity from what I understand.

Of course, we don't know when the next film will drop, but between the game at some point in the next few years and at least two new books next year, there is quite a bit coming our way to tide us over. Plus, with the re-cast, the pre-production of Bond 26 will also be quite exciting.

@ImpertinentGoon, I guess I'm just a different breed, when it comes to what I look forward to Bond-wise. The books do nothing for me, as I haven't enjoyed any I've read and at the end of the day I'm always left wondering why I'm reading what amount to fan fictions and not just going back to Fleming's work, which is what really matters to me. I respect the writers that want to take Bond and do their thing with him in book form, but the result just never does anything for me as there is no true authenticity to it. I'm kind of Fleming or bust when it comes to that.

As for the next film and the production schedule, I will try to keep as unspoiled as possible, so I won't even go near any of that speculation in the lead up. Maybe I'll be a bit more flexible, given that it will be a fresh start and I won't care as much what's next, but I still think I'll want to go into a new Bond as filtered as I did with NTTD, which I wanted to be fresh as possible. It just makes the experience so much more profound to truly be surprised, which is hard to do when you post on a Bond forum dissecting everything released about a film. When the time comes, I may have to take another hiatus, depending how I feel. We'll see.

Bond games are the big draw for me, as I love it as a hobby and it's the only media where you can actually be Bond, which is the whole fantasy we have. Games really are a sweet spot that can get us as close to the "Bond experience" as anything else, and I can't wait to get my hands on it.

I absolutely get where you are coming from. Especially with the films. I very much enjoyed all the speculation and theorizing on here in the lead-up to NTTD. During Covid and the constant delays this really was a bit of a bright-spot. But I can't help but feeling like I robbed myself a tiny bit. On my first view, there was always a tiny voice in the back of my head going "knew that", "already saw that", "oh, that's new", "already saw that". Well, no use crying over spilled milk. Maybe I'll be able to keep away from the production thread and all the YouTube dissections of trailers and whatnot, but I doubt it.

As for games: I actually don't really have a connection to the Bond games. I think the only one I have ever played was QoS, because my parents got me that as the first game together with the XBox 360 I got as my first ever console. And I don't think I made it past the first level on that. May have to dust the old console off sometime.
But I am seriously looking forward to this one. And I am certain IOI can put out something fantastic.

@ImpertinentGoon, I must have impressed restraint, because you aren't alone. I talk to fans all the time who are genuinely shocked I can stay so unspoiled, but it's very easy to me. It sucks at times, as I miss out on the lead-up to the film, but in the past the lead-up discussions and speculations ended up being more detrimental to my final enjoyment of each movie than I enjoyed, so every Bond movie since then I get further and further removed from discussion.

I was following the SF production a bit back in the day, but found out a few details I wish I didn't through the discussion of the production and felt rubbish about it. There were even members back then who were taking the clapper boards and set photos and were attempting to string together the chronological "plot" of the film via location, and that was when I realized I was in the wrong place. I want to feel the excitement of a new movie, but I don't want to dissect it so much that I feel like I've already seen it by the time I go to the theater. That is just silly and illogical to me, counter to everything I want to experience from a Bond film. In the lead up to SP I watched the trailer/s, but didn't get engrossed in the production from what I can remember and obviously with NTTD I was the hell out of here.

I don't think it's an accident I enjoyed NTTD so much, and that is definitely in large part because I avoided as much as I could. Didn't look up anything Bond related on YouTube, so no Bond news or speculation videos of any kind fell under my recommended, avoiding talking about the film with literally anyone, and just kept my head down. It's as hard as it gets these days, what with the internet's proclivity to spoil everything for you regardless of if you've had the time to watch and enjoy a piece of media, and it's such a sour drawback. I feel very blessed that the only thing I got a sneak of was Felix returning, but I had no context to it at all. With so much left open to my imagination, the film was able to emotionally eviscerate me, and I loved every second of it.

It has now been a full year since we got the announcement and the teaser trailer still gives me chill

Hopefully we get more in a year from now

Not going to hold my breath on it, but a glimpse at the Game Awards in a few weeks would be awesome.

I hope so too! I think our best bet however would be around the time of E3 next year looking at a late 2023 release.
  • Since they’re casting their own Bond, do we think it’s possible that they’ll go for a big name? Doesn’t seem likely to me, but you never know. Famous faces in video games have gotten more common again over the last few years, and casting a big name as Bond would generate a lot of publicity. I’d love it if they managed to get one of the often floated names who have aged out while Craig has been doing it, like Idris Elba, Tom Hardy or Micheal Fassbender. But I guess since it’s an origin story we should expect someone younger.

I think they said somewhere they were going to create their own Bond, which tells me they won’t use an actor. I hope they use a Jason Masters inspired look for Bond.

Yes they did, which excited me even more and I think is a better way to go, at least for the story mode. Having skins of all the Bond actors as an extra / DLC would be pretty cool though.

By creating their own Bond, I think they imply it won't be Craig or any previous actor, not that they won't cast someone more or less well known to make him the public face of their iteration. I would not be surprised if they contact Cavill for example to lend his voice and his physicality to their Bond. Though, I would be more surprised if he accepts.

Nevertheless, I would love to see Jason Masters's Bond serve as an inspiration.

They also said it was going to be an origin story, so I wonder whether someone we would consider too old to play cinematic Bond could work as a young video game Bond.
We don’t know what they really mean by origin, of course. Is it like CR, where he is an accomplished agent in his thirties, who finally reached 00 or is it more like the Origins comics, where he is basically still a teenager?

I, personally think they won’t go with a big name, mainly because I assume the release of the game and the announcement of the next cinematic Bond actor will not be very far apart and EON don’t want that muddled.

If it can serve as an indication: the Peter Parker from the Marvel's Spider-Man PS4 game is 23 but is voiced by a fortysomething actor who more or less served as an inspiration for his character's look.

And it worked well, both in the performance and the game. Spider-Man PS4 is one of the best games I’ve played in the last couple of years.

Oh, for Fleming's sake. Come home to see 11 new posts and I get the impression something actually got teased about the game. Bugger it all. ;-)

Cavill is a big gamer, though more of a pc gamer. I think he mostly plays WOW. But I wouldn't rule him out from accepting if asked. The question would be if they could afford him. A lesser known actor might be better. Easier to mould as their Bond.
  • I like the idea of being able to customize your own Bond, to really allow one to immerse themself in the world if their model of Bond looks like them, but I doubt IO will go for that.

That would be awesome! It would be funny if you could create your own Bond from different elements of Bond actors, create an amalgamation like Agent Under Fire, lol

Anytime they go “Generic” for Bond when it comes to the games, the final models are all some of my favorite looks of the character himself. I would’ve loved to have played an entire game as the Bond from Goldeneye Rogue Agent, he looked like a mix between Dalton and Brosnan.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but one of the few things we know is that it is going to be an origin story:

    It's Bond, James Bond.

Project 007 (working title) is a brand new James Bond video game to be developed and published by IO Interactive.
Featuring a wholly original Bond story, players will step into the shoes of the world's favorite Secret Agent to earn their 00 status in the very first James Bond origin story.
IO Interactive is currently recruiting elite talent from around the world to join the team that will build out this exciting and unique gaming title.

That, plus the teaser video and a link to their recruitment page is pretty much all there is on the official website.

While I trust IOI to put out a great game and I like having an original Bond for the game(s) in principle, I recently had the thought that video games would be the perfect vehicle to close the gap between QoS and Skyfall. Give us a few missions with Craig-Bond in his prime. Maybe even do a bit of a spackling job on the overarching storyline by bringing in SPECTRE earlier and connecting Quantum a bit better and so on.
I guess Craig is done with the role and they wouldn't want to undermine a new actor by putting out new products with the old guy, but I can dream, can't I?

I wonder -- and this is purely speculation, I'm in no way connected to the project -- if they're going to let gamers design/cast their own version of Bond.

Something innovative like that would certainly be within the capabilities of modern games. Many other franchises have long offered this functionality, even in games arguably more systematically complex than a Bond game would presumably be (Fallout? Skyrim?). Large-scale RPG fare.

When I start a new campaign/character in one of those games, I'll typically spend a good amount of time customizing the character's look before I begin. Sometimes (hilariously) right down to the placement of the eyebrows and cheekbones!

And even though the character model in the Hitman games is a constant, customization of the elements around him (wardrobe, weapons, other cosmetics) was certainly in-depth enough to suggest IOI is comfortable using such systems.

It could be a supremely interesting direction to take the games from the perspective of user experience and input. Imagine being able to create a Bond you identify with even more because the character looks...like you.
  • I’m sure they’re going to do something like Hitman where you choose what your character wears for each mission. I highly doubt they will have the actors’ likenesses, as it would be ridiculously expensive to have just one, let alone all six actors. The best we can hope for is costumes that have been in a Bond film and maybe the odd bonus map. Roger Moore safari suit anyone?

PC VR support for Hitman 3 will arrive in January 2022 ! So it's very likely that Project 007 will also have VR support.

I think IO will make their own version, maybe more leaned toward book Bond? Hard to say at this point, what they'll be more influenced by. I'd personally dig a period piece Bond set in the 40s/50s as the feel and atmosphere of the time would be great, with a Bond that looked more Fleming inspired right down to the cut on his cheek.

I do imagine the same old system from Hitman will be there, where before each mission you can outfit Bond with all kinds of gear and choose how to dress him. I hope that the game is deep enough that there will be multiple ways to execute missions, giving you the space to go all out or focus more on stealth. It would also be cool if the way you dressed had an impact on your ability to complete a mission easier, such as using a disguise or just going in a standard suit into the field.
