I’m working with Mic Rodgers on a project; he is LWs second unit director, stunt coordinator and Gibson’s personal stunt double.
He said this is at least a year out from going into production.

Won't that make Donner at least 91 when cameras begin to roll?

Due to his advanced age, I imagine that Donner will likely have at least one other director on standby during the production, for insurance reasons.

Robert Altman's last film "A Prairie Home Companion" had to do much the same thing with Paul Thomas Anderson essentially shadowing all of the pre-production and filming in case Altman was incapacitated.

Despite it taking ages I've hoped a proper and dark LW5 would happen for years. There's still gas in the tank and it can be done though I'm truly surprised it's going to happen. Fingers crossed it turns out well.

    That’s interesting, I didn’t know that.

Well, it is a somewhat extreme example as most big-name directors usually don't want to spend anywhere from 6 months to a year of their life shadowing someone else's movie.

Typically, it's a lesser-known veteran director with a solid track record, sometimes they may even be a member of the second unit or a producer on the film.

In this case, though, I'm 95% certain that the studio and insurers are counting on Mel Gibson to step into the director's chair if Richard Donner has to drop out.

Good point about Gibson, yes it’s handy having him there.

Well if Clint Eastwood can still direct in his nineties then I see no reason Donner cannot do the same. Good on him I say. One last hurrah for the team and one that hopefully would make up for the rather lacklustre LW4.

Bring it on. I like these movies.

And it's great to have nonagenarian directors working, especially good ones like Donner and Eastwood. I loved Donner's 16 Blocks; he needs to get back in the saddle.

I love these films and how they developed the multiple relationships within them. I just hope they don't screw it up?!!

I feel confident that this film will be enjoyable. It doesn't need to reinvent the wheel nor is it even necessary, but I admit that the pure nostalgia trip has me hooked.

Another Lethal Weapon sequel where our heroes will be definitely too old for this sh*t.

    vs.

Another Indiana Jones sequel where for our hero, it will absolutely be the years, not just the mileage.

Look, Hollywood, I know you like playing on our childhood nostalgia, but there’s a limit.

Now that Mr. Donner has sadly passed, I assume this project has been terminated?

I think the best thing about the Lethal Weapon franchise at this point is that there's no more of them. Don't make another one and ruin the good thing they've had going for a long time now - their absence.

Exactly. Making another one now would just be making one for the sake of making one.

As a fan of the franchise, particularly the first two, the only way that I would like to see this happen is if they had a really great script, and Mel directs.

I'd like to see another one. Be wonderful if Mel would take over. Since Donner's no longer around having most of the original team back could make it work.
They should use the later DIE HARD sequels as a template of what NOT to do.
  • Even with Donner alive I just didn’t see how he was going to direct another one. I mean the man was 90 years old. Yeah, I know, I know, someone will mention Clint Eastwood but he’s such a one-off wonder that he’s just a rare exception to the rule. VERY RARE! The man’s a treasure. Really.

As a rule you don’t have 90 year olds directing movies. And certainly not action movies. If Donner had wanted to direct another LW he should have done so 10 years ago or more. What was his last film anyway? 16 BLOCKS back in 2006? For all intents and purposes the man had retired a long time ago. Just because someone is alive doesn’t mean they need to direct another sequel. Some things are better left alone. I for one am a big fan of LW4 and I thought they finished it just right. There was a real sense of finality there. I never liked the idea of bringing back a geriatric cast for one last hurrah. Smells of desperation and laziness. That goes for all franchises.

Also wouldn't Roger be 84 years old now? That maybe really is pushing it for an action hero isn't it?

Exactly! I don’t care for the idea of let’s get everyone together from their retirement home for one last hurrah and let them be action stars again. Too ridiculous!

Yep. I remember back in 1998 wondering if it was gonna be worse than 3 ('cause face it, 3 wasn't all that great), but it was a great final flick!!

Id be open to a LW5 is Mel directs because I would trust him to make a great movie.

I didn’t even think LW3 was bad. Ok, it’s my least favorite of the 4 but it’s still a solid and fun outing. It was gonna be hard to top or even equal LW2 (still my favorite of the bunch!) so you can’t really complain. I don’t even mind Joe Pesci with the dyed hair and earring. It works because Leo Getz is such an oddball character that you expect him to try all sorts of crazy new things.

Actually for some time LW4 was my favorite of the bunch. I just had a blast with it when I first saw it. Loved the addition of Chris Rock and his back and forth with both Glover and Pesci, and Jet Li was one deadly villain!

I'd completely forgotten that LW2 ends with a George Harrison song. That seems mad...

Lethal Weapon doesn't exactly align with his worldview! :D

If so -- assuming they both die on the job -- there'd finally be a truly LETHAL weapon !

What? Harrison & Riggs want the same thing- world peace! ;)
I LOVE that song at the end. It a nice upbeat outro after all the harrowing stuff...
