Prey well that was pretty intense, the first half of the film was excellent and displayed the lost art of visual story telling. It got a bit hokey in the second half of the film on occasion though still maintained a certain level of quality.
The girl was beaten when The Predator pinned her down by the neck, with his superior strength he would have killed her instantly with a snap, I wish the film makers had avoided that situation.
Overall I really enjoyed this film and was on the edge of my seat.

    I loved the

I think this is the way to go with the franchise doing stand alone movies.

I think this is the way to go with the franchise doing stand alone movies.

The last one was an excellent template for doing that and I immediately wanted to see a similar approach in the future: a samurai Predator film, a Western Predator film, etc. etc.

Dropping the Predator into different historical periods is consistent with there motives, plus it allows the opportunity to drop the Predator into different genres of film.

Exactly. It's the perfect opportunity for such an approach.

I second that. This departure from big "franchise" setups with films delivering only half a story (Prometheus, Alien Covenant) is more than welcome. Let's take it back to the one film at a time approach. This allows for more creativity too. PREY was a perfectly enjoyable standalone film that doesn't require any homework, nor leaves you waiting for a sequel that finishes the story but probably never gets made (The Predator).

I binged the whole Alien franchise recently, and thanks to the Alien vs. Predator movies included, I decided to finally give all the Predator sequels a chance. Before the past week, the original Predator is the only one I had seen, and I just casually assumed none of the sequels would be that good. Boy, was I wrong, and happy to be wrong.

I was absolutely stunned by how much I ended up enjoying this franchise. I thought it was remarkably consistent, and I love how every single entry tries something so different. It feels fresh with every movie. For fun, here’s a ranking with my thoughts:

    1. Predator (1987)
I’m still putting the original classic film at the #1 spot, but it was seriously challenged by a couple others IMO. This first film does, however, strike the very best balance of action, horror, and comedy, and feels like a truly impressive, complete package. Having Arnold Schwarzenegger as the lead always helps with the fun factor, of course, but I found Carl Weathers and Sonny Landham to be particularly stellar side characters. The Predator is obviously a highlight, too.

Schwarzenegger’s been in a lot of great classic movies, but this franchise first is definitely one of his very finest. The jungle setting is used to perfection, the characters are all memorable, and the music from Alan Silvestri is wonderful. Just one of those great movies everyone should see.

    2. Prey (2022)
An extremely amazing prequel film that blew me away. It’s the most gritty and serious of the bunch, and the clash of older human technology with futuristic Predator technology is awesomely striking. Amber Midthunder is terrific as the lead - and I might as well say it now, but for the mainline movies (non-AVP films), the protagonists are great every single time!

Anyways, I loved the 1719 Great Plains setting, the suspense and horror ratcheted up, and the action was as impressive as ever. Honestly, I’d say it’s objectively just as great as the first, but the comedy and sentimental value of the original makes it my #1 choice for now. But sleep on Prey at your own peril; it’s ridiculously great.

    3. Predator 2 (1990)
The lone numbered sequel was a radical departure from the first movie, but I absolutely adored the direction it took. They really cranked up the action and comedy aspects for this one - at the expense of horror, unfortunately, but still, Predator 2 is a wildly entertaining movie. It’s one of those movies I feel like SHOULDN’T work, but totally does.

Danny Glover’s character is my favorite protagonist of the whole franchise, which is no small thing given I really like them all. The city setting was wonderfully done, and I also liked the gang war and voodoo elements. Actors like Gary Busey and Bill Paxton help add to the super high entertainment value. It’s a bit messy and silly, sure, but I found Predator 2 to be a superbly good time.

    4. Predators (2010)
Though my enthusiasm for Predators is a little less high than the previous few, I still like it quite a lot! Though we get a classic jungle atmosphere, we’re again given a cool twist with the setting as it turns out to be a foreign planet instead of Earth. The title’s a fun steal from “Aliens,” too, and of course has the neat gimmick of featuring multiple predators instead of just one this time.

The whole cast was great, but I’d single out Adrien Brody, Alice Braga, and Laurence Fishburne in this one. I thought the pacing was a bit off, though, and would have liked some more explaining about some things, and can’t say the cliffhanger ending was my favorite. It’s still another very entertaining and good movie, though, not too far away from the previous few.

    5. The Predator (2018)
The clear-cut weakest of the mainline series, but honestly still not as bad as I was expecting. The title is the weakest, the story is the weakest, and the setting is the weakest (I did appreciate the suburbia parts, but otherwise it just did not feel as innovative as the other ones), but I still had a good enough time with the movie. I really thought based on the reviews it’d be rough, but I think it deserves a chance.

Most of the characters are pretty good, though I wish some got more screen time and proper development, like Olivia Munn, Yvonne Strahovski, and Jacob Tremblay. We’ve still got great action and spectacle, and even a little horror. The comedy’s a mixed bag. Again, easily the least good of the main five movies, but still okay!

    6. Alien vs. Predator (2004)
I went over the crossover films already in my Alien ranking, so I’ll keep it brief. I don’t care much for them. Outside of some cool fighting and just the Predators and Xenomorphs carrying the films, there’s just not much of interest. Probably won’t revisit either.

    7. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)
I’d still take the first AVP in a heartbeat over this train-wreck; at least I can see what’s happening in the other one! It is honestly one of the worst movies I’ve ever watched. It’s a shame the AVP movies are mostly vastly inferior to the mainline installments of both the Alien and Predator franchises, because the Xenomorphs and the Predators are awesome and deserve better.

So, there’s another fun marathon and ranking down! I’d be very tough for me to pick between the Alien and Predator franchises if I could only have one. I do have a slight preference for Xenomorphs, but Predator has better consistency and less misfires as a series. Ranking them together… something like this:

    1. Alien (1979)
    2. Predator (1987)
    3. Prey (2022)
    4. Alien: Romulus (2024)
    5. Aliens (1986)
    6. Predator 2 (1990)
    7. Predators (2010)
    8. Prometheus (2012)
    9. Alien: Covenant (2017)
    10. The Predator (2018)
    11. Alien 3 (1992)
    12. Alien vs. Predator (2004)
    13. Alien Resurrection (1997)
    14. Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem (2007)

I was thinking a couple of weeks ago which series had the best films out of Alien, Predator and Terminator

Alien for me is the most consistent overall, the Terminator and Predator movies after the first two films dipped in quality considerably.

I agree with your rundown FoxRox, especially what you say about The Predator, which folks are really down on, but really it's just a perfectly fine adventure movie. Nothing special, no, but not the worst film ever made like you'd think it is if you saw some of the reaction. Predators is better, but I must admit there is something about the way that it's so much of a retread of the first (but with a pretty miscast lead) which puts me off it a little. I'm afraid Prey left me a bit cold, probably need to give it another go.

I've never seen Requiem, can't see that changing! I didn't hate AvP although it was pretty trashy: it amused me how similar the plot is to Prometheus though, considering how much more seriously that film takes itself!

I actually like Alien vs Predator quite a bit; It has a good premise, an interesting setting and the lead actress, Sanaa Lathan, does a nice job without being a Ripley clone.
This film is a strong director shy of being above average.

The first AVP was ok I do rewatch it, the second AVP I have only watched once despite having the boxset I thought it was pretty awful.

In Predator, Anna says that 'only in the hottest years' do the killings recur in the jungle, as if the Predator more or less reverse hibernates when the weather's not really hot. Guessing that aspect was dropped for the sequels?

There was mention of the near-future LA in the second film going through an unprecedented heat wave. And the third film took place on what was a Predator outpost-world, so I guess that would be hospitable for them.
