Early buzz is positive (surprise surprise), says the bathroom fight scene is worth the price of admission alone:

Great to hear! I hope all the reviews that roll in continue to be this positive.

Hmm, from “ True Lies” to “Casino Royale” and now MI, many great fight scenes have occurred in restrooms; :D I don’t know what that says.

I almost always forget about the True Lies fight scene. What a heavy-hitting beatdown that one is.

Want to go a little farther out, 1979's gang film The Warriors had a serious restroom punch-up.

That the people involved are going to beat the crap out of each other, and they want to be near the toilet when that happens.

    ...how thoughtful of them!

It pains me to admit this... but Cruise is really putting Bond to shame.

That's what happens when one goes for Oscar-bait templates and lets the other go down the entertaining wave.

The Craig era has followed on from the Bourne template while the M:I series has followed the Brosnan era?

Now I know the reasons , but if it’s as good as the pre-release buzz seems to indicate, why shouldn’t MI: Fallout be considered for a best film Oscar?

I don't care if it wins an Oscar, all that matters is that it is as good of a thrill ride as all the hype seems to suggest.

It should, but too often (though certainly not always), the Academy members think a film designed to entertain has inherently less value than one designed to make the viewer reflect about social issues and dramatic situations in our everyday lives. What they don't take into account is that most people couldn't live on a diet of only those types of films. You also need spectacle, entertainment, comedy, and these things deserve appreciation.

Oh I agree, it’s more of a rhetorical question.

While I believe that Bond still has big chances to top MI by a huge margin in the character department, I will happily spend a lot of money on MI tickets, based on the clips I´ve seen. As far as action and entertainment is concerned, this looks as if they picked up where Bond left in the 80s.

The last few Bond films pale in comparison to what MI is doing lately.

That's the problem, too much focus on character. These are supposed to be spy thriller/action/action thriller films, not kitchen sink dramas. Cruise has craftily found the hole left by Bond, and has plugged it with M:I. And while there is more drama in the recent MI films, it hasn't gotten out of control.

The Halo jump clip is stunning, they are actually building in some story there with Cruise acting just before the jump and all in one take with the camera man obvioulsy running and jumping backwards.

    Wow...just wow!

If the outcome is a tight thriller with not much action, I´d be absolutely satisfied, and I´m saying this as an avid action fan.
The focus on character is a huge part of what made the Connery/Moore films so fantastic. As one of the producers once said when asked what differenciates Bond from other action heros, "Bond has got style". I think what you mean, @MajorDSmythe, is focus on personal drama. The old Bond films weren´t concerned much with character development, but they had character all over the place.

MI tops Bond these days for the spectacle of their stunts.
The parkour scene in CR was probably the last truely marvelous Bond stunt.
