That wasn’t entirely a style choice.

Sounds like Hayley Atwell will be a villain for the first time in her career. I wish EON would have gotten her for a James Bond role.
What’s your source for the falling out?
The Bond series got Lea Seydoux after she played a villain in MI: Ghost Protocol. So it wouldn't be the first time, just a case where MI one-ups Eon again.
She's already (sort of) crossed over into the world of Bond

Esai Morales is older actor and last movies already have very young actors.
Really? Soloman Lane is a woefully underwritten character with a completely unidentifiable motivation. I've seen his M:I films a number of times, and I can't tell you his schemes or even why he is doing them. He's a pretty crappy baddie.
However.....he works really well because of Sean Harris who is so very good at being a snidely rat-like human being. His voice is so brilliantly creepy and instantly puts you on edge. Even with the most flimsy writing, Harris can overcome it and make this baddie threatening. If you had any other actor then Lane would be a misfire. Harris does the work, to make the character sing. Otherwise, Mcquarrie needs to figure a way to do more with him...
Loosing Hoult is shocking. I understand the reasons given, but the new guy has no resemblance to him....which either means the role is just another cookie-cutter baddie that anyone can play and in such case casting is so important. The alternative is that the script changed in recent weeks and Hoult was no longer right for the role.
Nonetheless, it's a shame as this could have been the film that got Hoult the attention he needed. He almost got Batman but lost out to R-Patz (who looks to be on a winning streak from the Tenet trailer) and now this. Hoult could be the new Bond if he keeps the momentum he currently has...but loosing this gig will hurt his chances as he'll become a lot less visible.
Agreed. 100%.
Second only to Hoffman's villain, for me.
Oh, yes. Can you imagine those two working together? I'd be afraid. Very afraid :)
Quite the clash of egos it would be!
I often watch this opening if I'm writing scenes with hints of villainy. Hoffman does a lot here without doing very much at all. He interrogates Ethan with his eyes. Also, just a great introduction scene in general.
He’s high on my list and is improving with age. If the next Bond is 5 to 7 years off, he’ll be just right.
Yeah he's just got another job, it wouldn't affect anything in terms of Bond. Might even help him not to be in another spy series. He's not a bad actor at all, I wouldn't rule him out. I think his career needs a bit of a kick though: he's in danger of going down with those dreadful X Men films.
Jesus! Those 20 years went by fast.
Man that makes me feel old!
