It's not a question of loathing. I don't generally loathe anyone and give most folks an opportunity to prove themselves. A few strikes (or one major strike) and you're out though. He's on shaky ground from past experience (particularly based on Man From Uncle where I personally found him quite poor, and an embarrassment to the memory of the character who was played so memorably by David McCallum).

I'll see one of these soon enough.

Well however you would describe it - loathing, a lack of interest, etc. - I think we all have an actor or two like that.

Keep me posted (and mention me, in case I miss it) if you do get around to watching and reviewing both.
Will do. Thanks for reminding me of Free Fire.

No problem. I've tried to get a lot of people to check the movie out to no avail but my one friend and he loved it. A brisk 90 minutes that I saw someone perfectly describe as "Reservoir Dogs on cocaine."

Don't worry about Hammer dominating the film, I'd say he gets equal screentime with several of the other key actors.

That's reassuring certainly. I just looked it up and realized that Brie Larson is in it (along with Sharlito Copley and Cillian Murphy). Definitely worth a watch then.

All of them are great in it, as is Michael Smiley. He was hilarious.

Hammer is not a bad actor IMO. Good in the Social Network. Saw him in Birth of A Nation recently and thought he turned in a decent performance.

lol here's a detailed video of how he broke his ankle, it's not pretty

    starts around 1:40

That's outrageous. Even if he didn't break his leg, to have your leading man doing that is incredible. Fair play to Tom. Can't say I agree with his religious views but when it comes to putting it all up there on the screen you can't fault the guy.

Of course they can only do it in MI because Cruise is able to call the shots himself. The studio can't have been happy with the delay to filming and inherent costs that's why we will never see a Bond actor so involved in the stunts.

Nonetheless EON really need to have a long think about the action for B25 because MI and Cruise is putting them to shame at the moment.

Tom Cruise is starting to look a bit older, looks a lot more tired around the eyes. Always blessed with a youthful handsome face but time catches up with us all. My guess is he'll keep making MI movies, though, but it would be nice to see him retire from the role before he hits 60 (Harrison Ford didn't really enhance his reputation appearing as older versions of Solo, Jones and Deckard!). Most heroes should remain reasonably young.

Why are we classing the guy as "old"? He's merely 55.

Cruise can't be replaced in terms of there is only one Cruise but, if they are clever, they would not try to go "like for like". That would be a disaster. They should go in another direction re a team leader and a woman is the obvious route as it would limit direct comparisons. The script writers could have some great frun with the dialogue on dropping some hints - we shall see.

But I do worry that , such is his strangle hold on MI (and his relative lack of success on other projects) that he will keep going way past his sell by date. Jumping the shark without the use of a stuntman. He is a fine actor and, hopefully, will take on some more mature roles that he can get his teeth into.

Looks more plausible than Liam’s Neeson

I'm all for that. Well said, @patb.

Ilsa Faust is a character who's more of a leader than a follower as opposed to Jane Carter, Zhen Lei and other previous female operatives. Including other "capable" agents like Brandt (Renner) and Declan Gormley (Rhys Meyers), I don't see them as being leaders, even though Brandt was said to have led an IMF team prior to the events of Ghost Protocol. His character is more of an analyst than a leading field operative.

I'd be all for Rebecca Ferguson picking up the mantle and have a more team-oriented Mission: Impossible films spawned than repeating Ethan Hunt's Evel Knievel show.

Thats a great pic. Hard to provide an objective view of the MI future with pics like that. Massive fan. If they do want to go down this route, then they should take it soon as they won't find a better female team member than RF. They need to draw up a contract for two more. (shes only 34). Plus the same director to keep the tone/feel the same through the transition

That would make room for some young, newcomer with a child like nievity who has much to learn. With ellements of the Cruise character but in their 20s.

Rogue Nation was very good and she was a large part of that, as was the script and direction (both pretty much flawless). Infact it’s probably the only one of the series I might rewatch.

I'm all for Ferguson taking over from Cruise. Faust is pretty much disavowed from MI6 anyway and I can see the IMF wanting someone with her special skills. Plays into the politics of the time as well, & in that way the clowns can leave Bond well alone for a few more years.

Everyone wins with the scenario, even though my suggestion of her being in the lead is rather pure and without any agenda. I rather like her to be in the lead without any politics involved, personally.

Oh me too. She's more than worthy just on the basis of capabilities, which is why they should do it.

The politics are just an added benefit, which could assist Bond too, because it's the agenda driven idiot American/British press who tend to make such a big deal out of this anyway, and she would then be an American agent of British background. Shuts them the hell up.

Actually her taking over feels like a natural progression rather than a forced , political move. In a way she’s cut from the Ellen Ripley mold; she’s a leader, gender is irrelevant.

No arguments from me. Indeed she's a leader.

I really do hope the producers realise how valuable RF is to the franchise (and potentially in future). The fact that she has come back is a really good sign (Paula Patton was pretty dull IMHO as a comparison). Obvioulsy, it depends on TC. Would he see a potential new leader as a threat ? or an opportunity to withdraw gracefully to someone more than 20 years younger. Considering how well the franchise has done, I really really hope they dont throw the whole thing away. It has massive potential to go on for another five .

I think they realize she's a 'playa'. That's why she's back after all. I'm not sure how large her role is in this film but if it goes as well as RN I can see them going with it. Renner failed to resonate (unsurprising) and I think they've been looking for a successor for a while.

I think it's safe to say from the PR pics being released that, not only does she have a big role but they see her as a valuable contributor if that makes sense.

It's not just the content of this but the fact that fans are creating and sharing these realy speaks volumes for the impact she has had (it's also great writing):

And if they cast Michael Fassbender in a Rollin Hand-like role, acting as a supporting cast member to Rebecca's leading persona, the whole thing would be a stellar measurement. Much like the chemistry Barbara Bain and Martin Landau had onscreen.

Fassbender and Ferguson just worked together on The Snowman. I can see him joining the team. It would be a good fit imho. There's your expanded universe right there.

I'm afraid Fassbender's time has passed for Bond, even though I'd have loved to see him in the role.
