I can mildly enjoy MI:2 now but it's not very good. It just feels like an alternate universe. It's like DAF following OHMSS but even more jarring. It's too much of a disconnect. It doesn't gel well with the rest of the films in the series. It's the odd one out certainly. It's bonkers but Newton is nice eye candy. Here's how I currently rank the movies.

    1. M:I and Rogue Nation tied for their equal greatness.
    2. Ghost Protocol
    3. M:I III 3 for III how fitting. ;)

    4. M:I-2 Odd one out.

MI:2 slow motion scenes at times are hilariously bad.

I accept that most agree M:I2 is the weakest in the series, but I love it. Grew up watching and enjoying it, always found it to be an exciting action movie, even if the traditional Woo staples are a bit in your face at times.

I love this movie almost as much as I love Licence To Kill.

    My Rating is...

    MI:I
    Ghost Protocol
    Rogue Nation
    MI:III
    MI:II

Ghost Protocol I did not like initially though grown to love it, that and the first film I rewatch the most. Rogue Nation is good though I am never really compelled to watch it.

    For me it's

    MI:RN
    MI:GP
    MI:1
    MI:3
    MI:2

My enjoyment of the last two is very much influenced by the fact that they both give me classic Bond vibes. I was heartened to read McQuarrie and Cruise mention in an interview about a year back that they did intentionally look to fill a space vacated by OO7 of late, because I realized my perceptions were warranted.

I prefer RN because I really like the characters, humour and Faust. GP has a more extensive threat and is a bit more ambitious in scope though, and it of course has that fabulous Burj stunt. Both great films.

As far as rankings, I lump 3,GP and RN together because I love all three for different reasons and elements. Starting with 3 they made Ethan a three dimensional character with out slipping down the rabbit hole into which Craig's Bond stumbled. I like 1 very much and then.......................there's 2

I also follow this line of thinking. A real effort was made to create some kind of overarching feeling/vibe/connection despite the three different directors; one that allowed the character of Hunt to grow without having to rely on continuity so much that the individual films couldn't be experienced on there own merits plotwise.

I know people tend to make fun of the melodramatic element to the third film, but it gave Ethan a bit of emotional weight that the following two films benefited from immensely. Cruise actually created a character in the last three films. He was a bit of a caricature in the first two - the second especially.

I never felt Hunt’s character was a caricature in either of the first two films. The second film may seem like a caricatured overstylized action film, but Hunt’s character didn’t have any faults in the matter. It was a better depiction than the melodramatic over-emotional rollercoaster he had in the third.

I too love MI2. I distinctly remember when I first watched it, I was fascinated by the climbing scene, by the fact Hunt now had long hair and by how different his character was in comparison to the first film. At times the film has this solemn, self-important tone that it shares with films such as Face/Off and The Rock, but it's all geared toward creating a unique style that's all about entertainment. We certainly aren't talking The Dark Knight here. I also love the action scenes, the soundtrack and John Woo's style. His use of zoom shots and slow mo is superb. The film is the Ethan Hunt show for the most part but it's ridiculous in the best possible way.

I am a huge fan of this franchise, but I can’t make it through MI2. As part of my pre-release of a new film marathon. I’ve tried to give it a go several times but it loses me early on. Prior to Fallout I’ll skip it.
I found the 2nd pretty fantastic the last time, some years ago, except for the leading lady, which I couldn´t connect to at all, thus ruining the whole film for me. It´s a real shame, because in interviews I always could fall in love with Thandie Newton.

    Can’t wait! :D

I’m getting the feeling Henry isn’t really the villain, just the agent assigned to chase Hunt as he goes rogue again by breaking out Lane from prison.

This is easily my most anticipated big budget movie of the year. Just the fact that it's a half-serious action movie that's not a sci-fi and doesn't involve superheroes is enough for me to watch it on premiere day.
  • I won't be too surprised if this film is the sort of miserable people keep claiming modern Bond to be.

Highly doubtful. RN was great and with McQuarrie in the director's chair yet again, I'm sure it'll be more than worth the money and time. Looks fantastic.

Of course. Everything I've seen and heard thus far says otherwise. Time will tell.
