Absolutely. One of the great what-ifs ever, right along with a third Dalton film.
We should make an Elimination Game of these what-if Bond films... we could add Quentin Tarantino's Brosnan Bond film... there may not be enough to make it compelling though.
We actually did just this pretty recently. An elimination game of alternative Bond film possibilities.
Oh really? Gonna dig that up...
The Great What If Elimination Game

A second Lazenby, third Dalton, and fifth Brosnan are the three I would most like to see.
I have also heard that Everything or Nothing has a very strong storyline and know that that has been touted as a better way for Brosnan to end his run. A more sci-fi/escapist final fifth outing for Brosnan would have suited me just fine as well.
I disagree entirely on his voice acting. I can understand why it might be jarring for some people to hear an older Connery’s voice coming from a 3D younger Connery, but the man still delivers an excellent voice performance in the game, and it adds an authenticity to the game itself. Not to mention, the I find the From Russia With Love video game to be much more satisfying as an experience than sitting through and watching DAF, NSNA, and The Rock. It’s Connery going back to relive some of the glory of the earlier films, and that’s why I’m all for it.
Now where I will agree with you is Connery’s decline as Bond following Thunderball. But in all honesty, he was kind of getting screwed over by Broccoli and Saltzmen. After finding out Dean Martin was being payed more to star in Bond spoofs than he was playing Bond, and not having the producers listening to his creative suggestions for the character, Connery just got fed up. Does that excuse his boredom in YOLT? No, but he’s at least still got some of the charm and twinkle from the earlier films in the likes of DAF and NSNA, it’s just not consistent.
...and The Rock isn't a Bond film so...
Now we have the annoying codename theory as well as the people who think The Rock is a Bond film to deal with now.
I said Mason was a code name, not Bond ..
Same here, but if YOLT was on the list, that would be my choice.
I meant that there's two persistent (and annoying) fan theories that keep popping up. One is that The Rock is a Bond movie. The other is that Connery through Brosnan is a different man using James Bond is a codename. Neither are true.
Besides, Connery had 3 "final" movies where he played a character actually named James Bond: You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, and Never Say Never Again.
YOLT has been replaced with a movie that isn't even in the Bond universe.
I'd vote for YOLT as the best final Connery Bond film, but out of your options, I chose DAF. :D
The Rock, though an ok action film, is not a Bond film for me. I’m actually very glad Michael Bay never had the chance to screw up a Bond film.
Someone mentioned Entrapment, I rather like that one too. Don’t consider it a Bond film of course but I would say that if The Rock is one, Entrapment can be one too.
Same goes of course for The Matador, as @Birdleson pointed out, as well as The Wild Geese, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and that episode of Alfred Hitchcock presents with George Lazenby.
Personally I like it when a former Bond has a blast playing a similar character, but surely we can only speak of a Bond film when it features a character with the name James Bond, right?
Matador? I like that one a lot, but November Man feels more Bondian to me!
Because this used to be the same guy that had memorable performances in believable films. How'd we get from the train fight in From Russia With Love, all the way to Bambi and Thumper; the shift is dramatic.
I do enjoy NOVEMNBER MAN, and that one is closer to a Bond film in tone, for sure, but with MATADOR he was intentionally taking a bit of a dig after being fired. At least I remember it being framed that way at the time. So funny to see Brosnan as an aging burnt out assassin, just drinking his days away, sleeping with middle-aged mothers. Still with the quips, but sharper and darker and far more uncomfortable.
That is what I keeping thinking of SF's denouement to NTTD's. We have everything being set up in place; new Moneypenny, new Q, new M, and Bond is ready to get back to work. Here we go! I was so ready for a series of great adventures. One film later he retires, next one he dies. Going by number of years, I guess it makes sense, but two films later just fells like I got gypped somewhere along the way.
Quantum of Solace- Licence Revoked, Rogue Agent
Skyfall- Retired, played out, reinstalled as agent
SPECTRE- Rogue, but in his prime, retired at end
No Time To Die- Still retired, reinstated, dead.
We barely got a normal Bond film from DC. Closest we got was SPECTRE.
YOLT should have been his last.
I really love YOLT. He was good in DAF, much more lively. He was actually fine in NSNA- it was just the movie around him that sucked.
But he killed in The Rock!!!!
Having given it more thought, DAF beats Entrapment. It was a difficult fight but DAF grabbed a fire extinguisher and filled Entrapment's face with foam before dropping it to the floor below.
:)) But of course.
I actually haven't seen it since it came out in '96. I remember quite loving it at the time.
It's really something. Not quite as good as Outland, but close. More action...
