Although i don't really carry cash anymore? That is going to take a lot of getting used too!
I think I heard on the radio news the other day that the notes featuring the head of King Charles III won't be in circulation for another year or so. I suppose they need time to slowly take all of the old ones featuring the Queen out of circulation. I believe the design will just be the same though obviously the head of the monarch and their royal crest will be different. Like Bond in Octopussy, "I prefer cash" over card payments but I do pay some bigger bills etc. by card.
Of course, one of my niece being a stamp collector, I had to order the first stamps that bear the portrait of His Most Gracious Majesty. The first batch (the flowers) arrived last week, and these ones arrived today. Nadine will be happy, I think.
That's a nice thing to do. I'm sure she'll love them. I used to collect stamps myself in my childhood. I think I was inspired to collect them after seeing my older brother's stamp album.
I don't know. I don't think it's very flattering. He looks kind of dumb and clueless. Or is it just me? I'm not a fan of King Charles, but he generally comes off as rather sharp and often witty. I know it's only a portrait, but still.
Maybe it's because he's not smiling in this portrait and looks quite serious? The late Queen was always smiling on her banknote portraits as far as I can remember.
Don't think she was, not much anyway, but she had gravitas. She had presence. I know it's a portrait, but it looks like a more serious, meatier Mr Bean, not King Charles. Maybe it's just me, I don't know. But I suspect the portrait has been sleeping in a drawer for decades and nobody ever bothered to check it since and ask themselves if that was the best they could do.
After I typed that post I took a Bank of England fiver out of my wallet to check and found the late Queen has a faint smile in her banknote portrait. I suppose you could call it a kind of Mona Lisa smile, barely there yet recognisable nonetheless. Of course, she's been made to look a lot younger than she was when the note was made and the little photo of her on the side of the note looks like it was taken in the 1980s. I suppose the artist seeks to flatter the Queen, which as she is a lady is fair enough. Perhaps they take a more "warts and all " approach with a King, I'm not sure, but it definitely doesn't flatter King Charles III in the same way as it did the Queen. I think Charles certainly looks better in this portrait than he would had he happened to accede to the throne in his younger days when he looked much more gormless and awkward and was more prone to gaffes. I think he's grown into his role much better over time and had the longest wait of any future monarch to ascend to the throne so he's probably better prepared for it than any predecessor ever was.
Yes, it's not on the money (well, it is) but I guess we're stuck with it! :)

I personally always thought Northern Ireland was at the bottom of the pecking order to be honest, but it's true Wales isn't too far behind. Wales just gets lumped in with England all the time as a kind of principality and it even has the same legal system. The Welsh parliament has the least power of any of the devolved governments in the UK. As for NI I think we're seen as a sort of backwater here and our geographical position away from the rest of the UK mainland doesn't help either.

I was thinking the same, it does feel like a lot has happened in the past 12 months.
Yes, a lot of stuff has happened over the past year with the brief Truss ministry, the crashing of the pound, the advent of the Sunak ministry, King Charles III's coronation, the war in Ukraine, the ongoing cost of living crisis, out of control immigration, crumbling schools and hospitals and so on. "May you live in interesting times", they say, and we certainly have been since about 2016 or so.

I love those coins, much nicer to look at and to distinguish than Euro coins. Try to discern 2 and 5 cent coins in a hurry.
Yes, they are beautiful. They remind me a little of the old Republic of Ireland coins before they joined the Euro as they used to have animals on each coin. These are much more beautiful though. I can't wait until they go into circulation. I agree that being able to tell coins apart is a vital part of the design. They should all be different sizes and colours ideally.
