Great news, I still regret getting rid of my N64. Looking forward to revisiting the game.

My stepson has a Nintendo Switch but no Expansion Pack, guess I'll be buying both shortly so I can finally revisit this masterpiece. Glad to see it finally, officially announced!

Not for us PlayStation players, though. Maybe we’ll get lucky🤞

Switch owners get the short end of the stick with original version and no remastering :/ really wanted a shiny new physical release for this. But it’s better than nothing and I really hope people get a kick out of it.

Yeah, and I believe the Ocarina of Time that ended up on expansion back was severely disappointing... crossing my fingers for you.
  • I just read that online play is Switch exclusive only, that's too bad.
Why not both remaster and both online play? Oh well, will look forward to the story levels.
    Sorry about PS @MaxCasino :(

Where did you read that? I seriously doubt it won't have online multiplayer on Xbox Game Pass.

I didn't catch that. That's such a shame, especially when the Switch exclusively gets online play. How does Xbox not get the same?

I'm only a PS owner so the Switch will be as good as it gets for me, I suppose. Not shelling out a few hundred bucks for a new console for just one game.

Exclusive to the new Switch version of the 1997 title will be online play, allowing 007 fans across the world to take part in the popular four person multiplayer mode together.

    Crazy! Thanks for the link.
  • No prob Nick, maybe just maybe it would be a timed exclusive type of perk, but who knows really.

The Switch only has a maximum 1080p resolution, but for a game like GE64 I doubt we’re missing anything in 4K.

I actually thought it was 780p lol

Regardless, going to have to pick up a Switch early next year for Octopath Traveler 2 and Tears of the Kingdom.

It may seem like that, but given all the rights issues involved this really must have been the best possible compromise they can come up with.

So after endless false starts and non-announcements, this is finally happening. I don't have a console, but good news all the same.

Maybe they to to do it backwark too us. Let's remember GE 2010 was an exclusive Wii game and that became no so much exclusive when it came later in Xbox an PS.

So maybe the exclusive bullshit multiplayer will be only a tempory exclusivity?

I'm thinking it's less of giving Nintendo an exclusive for multiplayer and more just sort of a default perk because of how Nintendo Switch Online works. The Nintendo 64 Online games run on emulation, and for multiplayer sessions one player acts as the "host" and their screen gets shared/streamed to the other players. You're effectively all playing off of one console via the cloud versus traditional online play.

The Xbox version, despite not being the abandoned XBLA version that leaked, will presumably be running on Xbox hardware to accommodate the updates such as 4K resolution and dual stick support. Live/Online matchmaking probably wasn't developed into it. Never say never, of course, but for the time being that seems to be why.

I'm just glad we're getting it at all in any capacity. The convenience of playing it on modern hardware is wonderful.

I think you're spot on there, @Ryan. Did some more reading on the whole situation yesterday and that's the conclusion I came to.

Well if Perfect Dark XBLA have online multiplayer that work on Xbox One and Series, I don't see why GoldenEye could not from a pure technical POV have the same thing...

Also if you could play too Xbox 360 games online on the newer Xbox fine, why new remaster GE would couldn't technicaly not be possible to let you play online while 2008 canceled one on Xbox 360 was going to get online multiplayer?

Because what we're getting is an enhanced port of the game versus a remaster. Perfect Dark XBLA (and the cancelled GoldenEye XBLA) were rebuilt from the ground up. Effectively what we're getting instead is a direct rip of the N64 version with a few technical enhancements.

Nintendo Switch's online multiplayer for the Nintendo 64 titles is built into the emulator. Not that Xbox couldn't do the same thing, but as of right now there isn't an equivalent option. They'd have to redevelop it for the port to function as an Xbox Live title.

Not to go off topic but Perfect Dark got just as much playtime out of me as a boy as GE and TWINE on the N64 did. Wasn't a new installment announced a few years ago?

Perfect Dark still gets a lot of playtime out of me, in fact I recently purchased it for my Series X.

Also indeed it was, in fact one of the developers recently came out and said the new game will be a sort of hybrid between the styles of James Bond and Jason Bourne, mixed with that futuristic touch. Hearing that made me extremely excited!

I had a "remastered" version on the 360 many years back, which is when I finally beat the game (that final boss always eluded me as a kid, I could never get past it). It was so satisfying. I even enjoyed PDZ for what it was; the instant action with bots was such a blast.

And wow, that's a great description that gets me even more excited too! Honestly, if it was top notch and had the same atmosphere of the original, I'd absolutely shell out for the newer Xbox consoles just to play it.

I already shelled out for the new Xbox because I sort of had this thought in the back of my mind that if a “rerelease” of Goldeneye ever were to happen, it’d be Xbox exclusive. I’m glad I made the right call in the end, because it’s been only about a week since I’ve gotten my Series X and now we have the official announcement. What makes this even more Bittersweet is that I also own a Switch as well, so I’ll be able to play both versions and be able to reap the benefits of both. I’m just happy to get a Bond video game release, even if it’s just Goldeneye N64 ported to newer consoles, the fact that 007 Gaming fans had to go over 10 years without any official releases was just sad really.
