I'll pick the white dinner jacket since I don't see those worn as often.

This look first made it's appearance in GF, then turned up again in DAF, TMWTGG, OP, AVTAK, and SP.

And non-officially in The Return of The Man From UNCLE:

Black tux is a bit unoriginal, though for some occasions it's still the best way to go.

Between the two, I'd go with the white one, providing of course I could pull it off (which I'm not sure if I can to be perfectly honest).

White for summer black tie events.
    Black for winter.

Midnight Blue = the ultimate tux, suitable any time.

Well as it's summer here down under, and Sir Rog wore it so well in OP. I'll opt for the white tuxedo please.

Connery also wears both in GF and DAF.

There is of course a potential third option...

Oh my, will Bond ever wear a pastel colour in a future adventure?

Lets move on and talk about Connery, Sean Connery. The Bond for a generation and then some. He starred in 6 official films and then gave a one finger salute to EON with an un-official entry.

Watching a behind the scenes doc on CR 67 it was pointed out that the producer wanted Connery and wanted to do a straight Bond film adventure. Connery asked for $1,000,000 for the role and the producer politely turned him down. Ironically said producer ended up paying Peter Sellers the same fee and suffered many headaches.

This would you rather is a square off of un-official Bonds with a twist.

Would you rather a CR starring Sean in the 60's or NSNA starring Sean in the 80's?

We got one and we can only speculate on what the other might have been. Which would you rather we had received? Have some fun, tell us why you made your choice.

If this CR from the 60s would be at the expense of the Craig CR, then I'd much rather have NSNA (again).

    Well, we already watched NSNA.

Casino Royale with Connery was a good idea but It needed more action.

I don't get these questions at all. We've just had "would you rather have twenty Bond films, or five", now we've got "would you rather have a film you know, or one that's imaginary".

    I'm missing something here.

A '60s CR with Connery. As long as it doesn't replace Dan's CR.

I'm trying different questions with some fantasy, some based on reality and some just fun. This thread was never meant to be an over thinking one. I am sorry if some of them don't hit the right mark. I do welcome people to submit any ideas for future would you rather questions.

Personally I like the question. It's an interesting point, a 'what if' that could've saved what would end up to be an abysmal film, against what we got, a rip-off from Thunderball with an interesting take on Largo and a terrible Domino. Balanced off with a Q that is more spectator than part of the film and a truly insane Fatima Blush.

The thing is, when would the film be set? If it is Connery from Thunderball in a straight foreward adaptation of CR, I'd probably prefer it even over Craig's. But if it was filmed after YOLT, I'm not so sure. Probably still prefer the imaginary one.

No, I'm sorry for being such a curmudgeon. I'm over-thinking it as usual. When I read back what I wrote it came across more arsey than I meant it.

Great thoughts so far. I think it's rather funny that they turned down Connery and his $1,000,000 demand and gave that money to Sellers. I believe we would be looking at Connery post YOLT as I doubt Cubby and Harry would have allowed their Bond to go into another film by a rival.

Would Connery be motivated to deliver a top notch performance? Most definitely. One thing is for sure having a Burt Bachrach soundtrack would have easily trumped the NSNA soundtrack we got in the 80's.

The mind also wonders if Ursula would have played Vesper Lynd. Connery and her shared some wonderful chemistry in DN. To see them reunited here in the late 60's would have been great.

As much as I enjoy NSNA, a 60's Connery Bond movie would be wonderful to see. Course we'd have ended up with a very different CR and one wonders if that would have stopped EON gaining the rights in the 2000's.

I find myself in agreement with @RichardTheBruce here. While it's fun to banter about "alt-history" I'm fine with the timeline we've been given. So 80's NSNA it is.

BTW @thedove, while we'll never know for sure, I have doubts that a post YOLT Connery would have actually given a top notch performance. Again, opinions differ on this, but I think that he was eager to move on from Bond (at-least for the time being) IMO.

1960's version of CR starring Connery. 100& I actually tried to write it once.

Something to stimulate your mind. This imagines the film as produced by Saltzman and Broccoli, not by Charles K. Feldman, but whatever.

CR is such a particular Bond novel that faithfully adapting it comes with pitfalls as a film. First of all I don't think there's actually enough plot there for a substantial film version (of course CR '06 had to add a whole first act to compensate for this). It's also rather less action driven than subsequent Bond novels and even comes off as a drama in places. Bond is for the first chunk of the novel quite high strung and outright sexist in a way even the novel seems to understand (I think this is by design and he comes off better after having dinner with Vesper, and certainly in subsequent novels he's much more humorous). I'm not sure if Connery's way of playing Bond would have gelled with that, if they indeed did want to adapt the book in that way.

NSNA isn't great, but I think it's better that we have it. Especially considering it means we get Craig's CR.

Definitely a CR starring Sean in the 60's. We'd already seen NSNA's story in TB. I'd rather have an extra Connery 007 film that was featuring his Bond in an adventure that he(and we) hadn't experienced yet.

That would've been a good trailer for it. Like the clip of Sophia from Arabesque and the use of "Bond with Bongos" in the background.

    Here's another attempt:

I went with DAF and MR. So I'm more in the mood for 1962-2002 light hearted fun Bond these days.

@ToTheRight That makes for a fun double feature. DAF and MR bookend the wildest decade(1970s) of Bond very well. Both are outer-spaced themed and feature lasers, both have Bond arrive in America at LAX, both feature American leading ladies who are initially cool towards 007, John Barry scores and Shirley Bassey theme songs.

Wow never thought of that @PrinceKamalKhan those films have a great deal in common.

Lets stay in the realm of fantasy with this next one. In two different times of the Bond film series an American was close to being cast as James Bond. Lets do a would you rather featuring these two chaps.

In 1970 Cubby and Harry were casting for another actor to play Bond. They decided on American John Gavin to fill the shoes vacated by Lazenby. John was a serviceable actor but this would have been a whole other level for him as the star. David Picker stepped in and got Connery back for DAF. What would a DAF starring John Gavin looked like?

In 1982 Moore seemed to indicate he was done. All his films after MR were one off deals. At the conclusion of FYEO it seemed that would be Roger's final film. Cubby went so far to screen test James Brolin for the part and you can find various screen tests online. Once word got out that Connery was starring in NSNA, Cubby knew he needed Moore to counter. Brolin was out and Moore was in!

    Lets hash this one out.

Would you rather a DAF starring Gavin OR an OP starring Brolin?

Interesting that both are American and have a similar appearance. I haven't seen any screen tests with Gavin in the role.

This might be a "I'd prefer neither", but for some giggles go ahead choose which one you would have rather come to a big screen!
  • edited January 6 Posts: 4,284
Having seen Brolin's screen-tests, I must say they're not bad. I don't think he was necessarily the best choice for the role, and I'm glad they got Roger back for OP in the end, but I can see why they decided to audition him.

From what I've seen of Gavin he was a forgettable actor. So Brolin it is.

A reviewer once described Brolin in some role as giving a "speaking clock performance!" and I would have to concur! I've only seen Gavin in that brief part in 'Psycho', but he does appear more Bond like, so for the sense of variety I'll go with him! I've seen Brolins screentest, and that fight scene, and also the scene with Vijay when he arrives in India! We dodged a bullet!!
