I seriously doubt this affects the game in any significant way, especially since Amazon/MGM probably understand, as most do, the significant role that video games play in brand reach and profitability.
Decisions, like the one announced today, aren’t made last minute. They’re negotiated over time. I wouldn’t be surprised if this deal was already in the works when the WSJ article was published.
Maybe the point of the article was to make Amazon a bit more cautious in how they handle Bond. I've noticed it's certainly got a lot of fans and viewers more sympathetic to EON's way of doing things and keeping Bond films theatrical experiences at the very least.
I suppose there's so much behind closed doors we don't know.
BB was clearly more involved in the other ventures she has, like theater.
Giving Amazon the creative power means we will have more content, more clear outlook on what will arrive and when, more formats for all to enjoy, video games, etc.
For the ones who have concerns on the tradition being maintained, they treated very well a large number of IPs, especially in the spies/war fiction department such as Jack Reacher, Jack Ryan, The Terminal List, ecc
So, really looking forward to it.
I have been critical of some of EONs choices these last few years, but I didn't want this, not this. :(
They should keep the traditional tropes such as Gunbarrel, title sequence etc. There's gotta be contractual things to keep the traditional things in place.
Will we get more spinoffs and other things? It's possible. I think the only major change will be Amazon MGM Studios Presents (insert actor here) as Ian Fleming's James Bond 007
Well, we don’t know if the joint venture has a new name. It could be that Amazon/MGM and EON’s new joint venture is called “007 Films” or something like it.
As far as I see it (and happy to be corrected) this new 'joint venture' is the new equivalent of the Danjaq/MGM deal which held the rights to James Bond 007 and presumably MGM and Broccoli(s) hold equal ownership of that company, whereas Amazon/MGM take over from the Eon side of the old deal in that they were the company who actually made the films and decided what went in them.
The Broccolis aren't letting go of owning half of 007, because you'd be mad to! :)
But the old deal meant that both sides had to agree on making a film, I wonder if that will remain or the new venture means those rules have gone. You'd imagine if she owns half she get to have a say/veto on what the rights are used for, that seems standard. Unless it's a 51/49% split of course.
I doubt they'll have to use that stuff, just like Eon didn't choose to use some of it in CR, but they'll own it all so will be able to.
True. I'm sure we'll get some more information soon.
With that being said, I've never seen Rings of Power since LOTR isn't something in my wheelhouse. But shows such as Reacher, Jack Ryan and Bosch are amongst my favorite shows produced by them. I don't think quality will be a problem. But they really need to focus on features.
Sad day indeed. Troubled, uncertain times ahead. Once more, the cinematic Bond is pretty much aligned with the state of the world.
We can only hope. And, more than ever, use our voices to clear up what our beloved franchise is all about, in case they, at the new offices, don’t know.
Agreed, plus there's no reason to get rid of those. If anything, Amazon will try to make the safest movie they can, so I can see them forcing all the Bond trademarks into it, the Bond theme blaring every other minute and so on. An AI-made Bond movie, so to speak.
Feels likely, doesn't it; a sort of Force Awakens Bond.
And part of me will probably enjoy that, I guess you could say GoldenEye is that really (and came after a hiatus too so was pretty much intended for that purpose). But I'd hope for some CR-style meat and originality at some point too.
That’s the only, sort of, possibility positive thing I can think of…maybe.
I am optimistic. I'm sure there are hundreds of directors who want the job.
'Fanfic' is my cynical take on that. A team of writers-for-hire, pursuing a Bond product for the lowest common denominator?
Look, I'll try not to be too pessimistic. Take Stranger Things on Netflix. Whether you like it or not, it delivers good material for a certain target demographic. And apart from a few comics and some merchandising, it doesn't go for spin-offs, crossovers, or, worse, a new season every couple of months. I just hope that Amazon doesn't "star wars" the life out of Bond.
Amen.
Yeah, that was my first thought. Disney made a safe SW movie as they had just bought the franchise and had to prove the investors they had to make their money back.
This is a huge change, and could be the end of 007 as we know it. Up to now, it’s been driven by a small family group. From now, it will be run by a mega-corporation, by people with annual performance bonuses to earn.
However, both Barbara and Gregg are at retirement age, and I didn’t feel a huge creative drive from the family over recent years. Maybe it’s time they enjoyed their well-earned retirements.
$$$.
That’s all it’s about. It’s all anything’s ever about to anyone, lol.
That's the beginning and end of the reasoning honestly. Amazon having control now gives me approximately zero faith in whatever oversaturated nonsense they'll come up with.
Bond died in NTTD, but damn, I didn't expect that to feel so permanent.
Hopefully, we'll get some reassuring news in the next few days.
