Talking about "controversial", I'm always amazed that people can actually have discussions about the gunbarrel. The only details I remember off-hand are that "Bond" wore a hat in the early ones and that DAD had that bullet, and the latter only because fans got so worked up about it at the time. I have never been interested in ranking those scenes, and find them only relevant as a kind of trade mark, but no more. For me, it's akin to deciding which of the 24 Mercedes cars in the parking lot has the shiniest three-pointed star. Futile, actually. I don't care.

Exactly. I had to specifically watch the compilation of them on YT to spot any notable differences in the gunbarrels. Already forgot what most of these differences were (not counting the obvious ones, of course).

I'd pretty much agree with that. Although the DAD gunbarrel truly sucks.

You could make this statement for a lot of rankings and lists. Personally, the gunbarrel is a unique trademark, something that gets my excitement up as a fan for what's to follow, and with variations as far as music and other little touches it's well worth my interest.

If we're throwing out personal tastes, I can't understand the popularity of threads like Last Bond Track Or Theme You Listened To or Last Bond Movie You Watched, which has nearly 10,000 comments. I'm not sure why anyone would care what someone else is watching or listening to or anyone what I am.

Not controversial what about the actual gunbarrel music?

Hands down my favorite is Thunderball
Least favorite probably LTK and TWINE.

I feel pretty much the same, though my favorite gunbarrel music might be GOLDFINGER. They're similar in style and have that extra punch that gets the adrenaline going. I've always noticed the guitar melody in GOLDFINGER is played slightly different as to skip one note.
LTK's is alright but I didn't like it at the time. I'll take it over TND, TWINE and SP any day. TWINE's I find to be a real snoozer.

TWINE music was just super bland

This might be controversial. My favorite gunbarrel music is from Mr. Awesome version of the theme.

Guess this is as appropriate place as any. Do you guys think a rap song as a Bond theme could work? I'm not a rap fan at all, apart from early Linkin Park.

Never. James Bond is supposed to be stylish. Might as well put him in a fluorescent green Murciélago and give him eye piercings and a tattoo on his arse.

No. Keep rap in the style of a Kingsman-like film.

Same goes for hard rock and metal. Keep them out of Bond.

The closest we'll ever get and what I would hear was You Know My Name which was perfect.

Yes. Somewhat close, but not entirely which was fine. Personally, I always preferred the theatrical version of the song than the regular version released in singles and heard in the music video.

I just hope Bond does go down the route of what Mission: Impossible 2 and the first xXx film had for "music".

Eon turned down Johnny Cash's country western Bond theme for THUNDERBALL, so I don't imagine they'd go for rap either.
That said, of all eras that would most likely incorporate a rap title track I could see it in the Craig era more so than others.

I always thought that Another Way to Die was kind of a rap song. It’s certainly awful enough to qualify as rap.

The same goes for Madonna's abomination too in a way. I thought that was some sort of pseudo rap, or something anyway..

Precisely. Both are pseudo-rap type of songs that aren't worth anybody's dollar.

Quite frankly, I can't stand rap and the more extreme kinds of hip-hop either. And I remember strongly that, when first seeing a video of AWTD (NOT the credits sequence) before QOS came out, I thought that they couldn't mean it. But I think it actually works in the context of the movie in that it is designed to be a sort of warped, distorted version of a Bond theme, much as QOS is meant to portray the initially warped and distorted life that Bond endures after what happened to Vesper. And so I much prefer it over that Madonna mess and maybe even over some others of the less striking Bond themes (say TMWTGG, or All Time High - which I like, by the way). Just too bad that QOS's editing is also warped and distorted, but as it is, AWTD is okay as a theme.

I had a friend who used to say "rap is one letter short".
I think AWTD is about as close to hip-hop we'd get in a Bond film.
I think it boils down to appropriateness for the individual film in terms of style and tone. Something like McCartney's LALD was absolutely perfect for George Martin's score, introducing Roger, and giving the film a different tone to the others. Yet, for me it remains just as Bond sounding as GF or YOLT. I can't really say that about DAD or AWTD.

I think I said it before, but I'll say it again: Bond villains should not be Bond's equals, but superior to Bond, at least intellectually.

I do love the disappointment in some of the older villains (Drax, Dr.No) when Bond isn't as smart as they'd hoped - they truly wanted him to be their intellectual equal.

I do as well. However the title sequence itself its a little bizzare. But it doesn't come close to Maurice Binders camera fettish sequence in LTK. That one is abysmal.

Yep, I'm ok with AWTD as well

I think AWTD is a pretty decent song hampered by some pretty lousy singing. Or maybe it's a matter of the voices blending badly... something is off with the delivery.

It is miles better than that Madonna drivel anyways!

Well on a similarly controversial note, I love the 80’s title sequences. I also quite like the one for TMWTGG, another sequence with few fans.

The 80s had the worst title sequences in my opinion. From Sheena Easton to the blacklight women in AVTAK to the overuse of cameras in LTK. It was all so bizzare

Count me as a TMWTGG sequence fan. I like the rippling titles and the golden gun appearing throughout it. I also dig the song. It isn't LALD, but it's got a nice energy and vibe, I prefer it - controversial opinion coming - to Adele's SF and many other more notable theme tunes.

I’ve always thought it sounded like it was recorded in a basement and edited in Garage Band.
