What's the hold up then? The rights issues surely aren't the reason nobody has the Bond licence?
EA are lavishing so much care and attention on Star Wars right now, similar to what they did with Bond back in the day. They'd be perfect to give it to IMO, but they probably have a lot on their plate with Star Wars.
Wasn't Nintendo not wanting GoldenEye on another platform the only reason the HD version didn't go ahead?
They seem to have relaxed a bit in recent years, with their mobile games... and Xbox and Switch have cross-network play in Minecraft and Rocket League, they seem to be on good terms right now.
EA gave up on the Bond license after MGM's demands on the video game adaptation of Casino Royale did not meet with theirs, so, with the project unfinished and MGM to lose millions of dollars over the merchandise, before anything disastrous would've taken place, EA abandoned the Bond license for good. But, they still have the rights to the games they published.
It's the same case with the original GoldenEye 007 as Nintendo was the publisher of the title, so they have the rights to the game. And, of course, at the time when the Xbox Live Arcade remaster was to be released in February 2008, Activision had the Bond license so they couldn't come to an agreement with Nintendo. Adding to that, Rare was bought by Microsoft a few years back, so there was a legal backlash. That's why the N-64 game remaster on Xbox 360 didn't become a reality, under the unfortunate circumstances.
And now, the Bond license only in the hands of Danjaq (Eon and MGM). The ultimate decision is theirs to make.

I had no idea EA still has the rights to those similar to Nintendo with GoldenEye.
Isn't it usually the case that when a new publisher gets the rights, that voids previous agreements? (excluding GoldenEye as that's a unique situation)
I can't think of any specific examples with games, but in comics that's the case... Dark Horse lost the Star Wars rights and now Marvel are re-printing their stuff with Marvel branding. Same thing before that, Dark Horse re-printed Marvel's old stuff.
I thought that once EA's contract expired, that was it, they can't do anything with those games without negotiating a new contract?
I'd love to see those old games come to Xbox One and on EA Access :D

There's only one thing I can really see happening at the moment, and it would really annoy me - they give the license to Telltale. And there's only so much a Tellale game can be, talking and quick time events, we'd be stuck with that for a few years.
Another company that gets the license can't remake the games with original stories as that was orchestrated under EA's administration (007 Racing, Agent Under Fire, Nightfire and Everything or Nothing), nor can they remaster the other games based on the films. But, they can make new adaptations based on the films as that's strictly under Eon's administration. They orchestrated the story, plot, script, etc. Much like how it happened with the 2010 remake of GoldenEye starring Daniel Craig.
Such a shame really. If these games get a remaster, the companies would make a shedload of money. Just look at how good they look with enhanced graphics.
The good thing about original Xbox backward compatibility (starting in November) is that the games scrub up pretty well, not quite as good as those screenshots but still.
So there's only one thing for it - EA *has* to get the license back and get those games out on back compat or remastered. :D
I think it'd be cool if they brought Pierce Brosnan back like the fan trailer suggests and had him as the "game Bond" like they have different versions of Batman. It might be a tad embarassing for him though!

I personally wish they make the Bond6 game that they planned with Pierce after Everything or Nothing.
I don't think the big gaps between films helps. The whole Bond operation used to be this big merchandising thing, but now there's very little of that.
Casino Royale getting rid of gadgets was probably the thing that killed Bond games initially I think.
They started making films of a higher quality (to an extent - Casino Royale is the only totally successful Craig film IMO) but to the detriment of everything else. It's become less marketable.
The magic of the Bond games were the gadgets and the Brosnan era extravaganza. That's what made the Bond games likable for many, including me. But, when they just made Bond action shooters (not adding too much content to it, either) and made it resemble a poor man's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the game license lost its identity. They tried to bring some of combination of the old and new in 007 Legends, but it fell flat. It wasn't handled well, at all.
Maybe I am old school Benny? But no follow up Bond game has never come close to it's pure addictiveness for me.

Likewise. I spent hours...days...weeks playing that game. A few years back they had an N64 console for sale in a second hand shop, complete with GoldenEye. I almost bought it just to relive those glory days.
The only game that got slightly close for me was EON. But it wasn't a patch on GE.

I think it's also telling that Nintendo were unable (or didn't try) to stop the release of the Perfect Dark remaster. If they could stop the GE remaster because they, as publisher and then-owner of Rare, held the rights to the game, they could have done the same to PD. The whole situation just underlines how Nintendo are a bunch of litigious jerks, and it wouldn't surprise me that Activision were a bunch of gutless wonders not wanting to upset the maker of the best-selling console at the time; the Wii.
However, I do still believe that the video game rights as products belong to the original publishers because I've a friend who works in the video games industry and has told me as much. But, that makes the whole story ghosted and still not clear on official grounds whatsoever for what precisely was the problem not to release GoldenEye 007 on Xbox 360. The complete truth is never told.
Yeah, the whole rights issue with GE is just a mess. It really bothers me how close we came to seeing the remaster release. It was so close. In alternate reality, in place of my PS3, I'd have a 360 just for GE, and I'd say a daily prayer over it in hopes that it wouldn't overheat.

Silo&Train (both long corridors where you can shoot hordes of enemies)
Cradle (just like in the movie i love the tension here)
I played the game before seeing TSWLM or MR, so I had built him up in my mind to be much scarier than he ended up being! You can imagine my shock-- especially since I saw MR first of the two...
So it's even more astonishing that i not only beat the game on 00 Agent, but i managed to get every unlockable cheat. No tricks, just blood, sweat and tears, and from what i remember it took me half a year. One of the proudest achivements of my teenage years (hence my Username)
Whats even crazier, after i became known as a Goldeneye veteran, a classmate asked me one day if i could unlock all the levels and cheats in his goldeneye copy as he couldn't do it. And so i did, but this time it took me only one weekend :D
This solidified my status as a Goldeneye 64 legend in my school... or a huge nerd (well, it's all a matter of perspective)
How long did it take you guys to beat the game? and did you get all the cheats as well?
Dam is my favourite level, it made such a good first impression.
I can't remember how long it took me, but it was over several months, me and my brothers got so addicted to the multiplayer!
