Just posted my review in the Last Movie thread @peter. Great little action thriller. Very simple, no pretensions, and Martin Campbell's handiwork is all over it. It was made on a meagre $35m production budget reportedly and for that amount I'm very impressed.

Brosnan is excellent in it (probably his best performance in some time).

Just read it @bondjames... Great review-- thanks for posting. Now will definitely have to check this out. It somehow doesn't surprise me that Campbell still has it. It seems when he's submerged in action-thriller, he shines... Take him out of that (GL comes to mind), he's lost.

    He's an action/visual story-teller.

Hopefully this does well since the mid-budget film is all but dead, isn't it? Bring it back and we may get tight little thrillers again.

Yes, I certainly hope that's the case @peter. While watching it I really was reminded of the past. It's like watching an old hand at work. There was something simple yet appealing about the way it flowed - almost procedurally. I've not seen that kind of elegant simplicity for some time. It's not a big budget affair, and one must adjust expectations to account for that, but one can certainly tell that it's got a higher level of quality than the more mundane efforts that come out from time to time. I much preferred it to The November Man.

Just got back, and great stuff. @bondjames' thoughts mirror my own: simplistic, straight-forward revenge thriller - Jackie is on top form in one of his more dramatic roles, and Brosnan is on fire and scene-stealing throughout. Some intriguing twists and turns throughout, alongside some captivating drama perfectly mixed in with some heavy-hitting action scenes made this one a more than worthy trip to the cinemas.

I also appreciate the tiny fact that:
It's a rare revenge flick where the lead is still ruined and miserable at the end -
he got his revenge, but it didn't bring his daughter back. We see him return to his restaurant, and thus, his old life after forcing Liam to upload the image of him kissing the bomber, just as broken and sad as he was after his daughter was killed.

    Damn fun movie.

Glad you enjoyed it as well @Creasy47. I am really looking forward to buying this one on blu ray. It's my favourite Brosnan film in a long time and I like Chan's more serious character in this film as well.

    Regarding
the lead being miserable at the end, I didn't really think about that when viewing the film, but you're right. In a way it's quite sad. I'm glad they didn't dwell on it too much because it would have spoiled the mood.

Couldn't agree more. Can't wait to own this one on 4K.
I also hadn't thought of it, either, but my buddy pointed out how much he loved it because he rarely sees that in revenge flicks of this ilk, which was a great point.

I'm glad they didn't dwell on it, either - he was back with the lady he lived with, and got his revenge. All is right again.

Barry Norman interviewing Pierce in 1997. I remember watching this at the time.

Loved the interview. Thanks for posting them, @BAIN123.

On the other news, I just dug into the production diary behind the film based on the Irish Maze Prison Escape events, H-Block. Production is due to start sometime during Spring next year, and Cillian Murphy is out of the picture, leaving only Jamie Dornan and Brosnan in the cast list, with Jim Sheridan as the director.

I love Sheridan's stuff. He should deliver a meaty film for Pierce and the rest to take part in.

Indeed. Sadly he's a very underrated director. I'm hopeful H-Block will be grander light within the business industry.

No Cillian for H-Block? What a shame, such an underrated actor. Eagerly awaiting the new season of Peaky Blinders.

At least Brosnan is still attached.

Apparently it was because they couldn't get Brosnan (possible at the time he was filming Spinning Man?) at a scheduled time that delayed the production, and Cillian wouldn't be on board if production was due to start on Spring 2018, so the latter left.

Agreed, he's a very good actor. Shame he left.

As a tea drinker and more specifically a Lipton tea drinker, I support this advertisement. ;)

Pierce acted that well, treating it like the finest martini was in his hand.

Pretty cool, i haven't seen this one before. Reminds me of the advertisements for Ferrero Rocher he did back in the Day, which are among my favorites.

At 0:16, that's a theme from Batman Begins. I hadn't noticed before how lovely it is.

Anyway, this commercial is pretty damn great. I agree, Pierce sells that sip of tea very well.

Unlike Bond, who despises tea, I also am a tea drinker, and like Braders and Brozzer up there, specifically a Lipton tea drinker. And Pierce himself treats the drink with appreciation and respect, you'd think it was the most sophisticated and coolest man's drink.

The scene they pretend to film was an exact remake of the Casino Royale scene where Vesper comes to the table for the first time. Shot for shot.

The confident glance at the woman, the sip of tea, the experience of the flavor, the afterglow. I love how the other people at the table mostly keep still, as if time had frozen. Great stuff.

And the music, although brief, does make me more curious about what Zimmer could do with a Bond soundtrack.
