Remember that the reviews of the Brosnan era will be the first Saturday of 2013 with the 17th film, "GoldenEye". Here's to a great Skyfall and see you in a few weeks!

Very impressed that us old timey folks ranked LTK at the top.
  • It is great to see but I'm bracing for it not to last, still to see both Dalton films in the top 5 where I feel they belong is a beautiful thing :)

OK now I'm really out of here.
  • Is this thread going to get started up again soon? I'd like to see what you all thought of SF.

We'll re-start at the beginning of the year. Skyfall doesn't show in Japan until December (where 4EverBonded is from), then we're looking at the holidays.
  • Yes indeed, the reviews will start up again in January with the Brosnan era. But before I say more, our girl 4Ever wanted me to tell her fellow originals and friends on other threads reading this that she misses all of us greatly. She says she is chomping at the bit anticipating seeing SF on 12/1 and then rejoining us.

There's been no new reviews so the ratings remain the same. Nic has LTK and 4Ever still has TLD to do so. Once I get one, I'll update. For myself, the only 2 movies in the current top 10 that I didn't have in mine already would be Spy and YOLT. We still have GE, CR, and SF to go so it's going to be interesting. DN has taken a real points beating due to it's age, a shame because it deserves better.

Skyfall- not sure if we'll discuss this much here until it's time to review it, there are so many other threads going on where we've put in our initial thoughts. I'll be seeing it again today for the 2nd time so it's been on my mind. But if any of the originals want to talk about it here, feel free, I'll join in. Looking at the schedule, I'm not sure how it's going to work. I can see the reviews for Brozzer and Craig's first two going into mid-February. I can also see SF not getting DVD release until mid-March or possibly even April as big as it is worldwide. It's something we all need to discuss regarding when we'll give SF the full treatment, for myself I think I'd like to have it on DVD so I can really study all the nuances and take notes before I commit to a full review.

Then there's the other matter of keeping the thread going past these reviews. I can do some things with the eventual statistics such as comparing the finished poll to personal rankings to keep it moving. I've invited some fans identifying themselves as original types to come and join in and perhaps even review, but no takers just yet. Hopefully that will change. Perhaps we can get a book versus movie discussion going next. I'd hate to see it die out and off, so I welcome any ideas.

I will say that I was very pleased in general with Skyfall and didn't find a lot to complain about. I didn't like that Severine was the sacrificial lamb rather than the girl in the end, but Dench and Harris were the Bond girls regarding on screen time and I understand the logic in that decision. I also didn't quite like the rust angle and thought it was overplayed, I had expected to have a normal portrayal and movie. But given the needs to introduce and give the new regulars some background, again there is a logic that I find reasonable enough to accept and endure.

I'm struggling with LTK. The apparent love for the film amongst oldies has slightly demoralised me. I find it such a bitter film that leaves a bad taste in my mouth and here it is romping away with the ratings. ;-)

Look at the bright side Nic. Can it possibly be worse than reviewing Brozzer's last two films?

I'm kind of dreading that myself.

With the criteria we're using, I will say that I tentatively have Skyfall at 43. Subject to change of course.

    Well the way I look at it, if I could get through MR in one piece, Nic will survive LTK and I will survive DAD. Besides, at least I have Sophie in those dresses 8-}

Just got back from SF view #2. Bardem even better the second time, he is just amazing. Larger than life, one of the very best ever. The manic edge of Zorin but with the serious threat of an ex-MI6 agent like Trevalyan behind it. Actually the entire cast was one of the very best. Lots of these supposed plot holes easier to rationalize now that I was looking for them, most of these complaints are really lazy. Makes you wonder exactly what their maturity level is.

There were two bullet scars from Patrice and Moneypenny's shots. And that was a human hand grabbing Bond's just before the titles hand pulled him down to the depths, so he was rescued. How can people miss these things and expect us to believe these plot hole claims???

That's a great tentative score Kerim. I haven't even begun to ponder that far ahead. But there is little doubt now in my mind that it is a top 10, classic type of entry. I don't think I'll need another view to be sure of that much, I'll just anticipate the DVD release of this and hopefully the EON documentary will be part of that. Now that's also a topic we can discuss. Thoughts on the doc, anyone?
  • I'm really happy LTK is rated as no 1. Hopefully it can keep that spot!

Fair enough. I'm looking forward to it then. I'm expecting GE, CR and SF to get the most praise but I'm hoping TWINE gets some love too.

TLR, I'm pretty sure LTK will not stay where it is. I'm just happy that most of us love it as much as I do. I think it will still stay in the top 10 though. As far as TWINE, I'm not seeing much coming it's way. Not too many people seem to like it as much as you do.

Yeah sadly TWINE isn't that popular.

Even if it won't stay up there, I'm glad LTK was no 1 for a while. It's already definetly ahead of some real classics, including some 60s films, I think that's a pretty big achievement.
  • Well, I know Nic doesn't care for LTK, actually he doesn't much care for the Dalton era so there it is. But I'm thrilled anyway. The three you mention will do well if everyone sees it that way. I've always liked the first two Brosnan films and have finished my reviews on both.

I think I'm one of the few people on this site that prefers TWINE to TND.

I like TND, it's fun and everything, and it feels really slick, but it just feels so average to me. There's nothing really bad about it but nothing great either.

TWINE I've always really enjoyed much more, it's been in my top 10 since I saw it and for a while it was even my favourite Brosnan film.

TND has Michelle Yeoh, if it wasn't for that it wouldn't be equal to GE & TWINE for me.
  • Yes, Yeoh is a highlight for me and her authenticism is why. Can't say the same for Berry and her character.

TLD is one of my favourite Bond films, Dalton just happens to be my least favourite Bond actor.

Probably one of the reasons why TND is my favourite Brosnan Bond. And because the scene with Dr Kaufman gives him his most Bondian moment - "I'm just a professional doink my job!"
    "So am I". Bang.
But Michelle Yeoh makes the film for me.

Sometimes I think you and I are "brothers from different mothers" when it comes to the films :)

The scene with Kaufmann is also in my opinion Brosnan's most Bondian moment. I love how Schiavelli says "do-ink" and never breaks with the character he was playing. He's so relaxed in all of it that you believe he feels this guy is just another job he has to do. He was such an underrated star, he did so many entertaining roles, it's sad that he has since passed away.

Him and Brosnan also worked on Remington Steele together. :)
  • First, I wanted to wish all the fellow originals, whether you post reviews or just read, a great holiday season.

There are no new rating updates because there are no new reviews, so I did not provide an updated list. We will be starting with the Brosnan era and "GoldenEye" as of January 5th so I hope to be able to have the Dalton reviews completed by then.

Happy Weihnachten and many blessings to all!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all my brother originals! I hope you stay warm, have much peace and love this festive season, and maybe time to watch a few Bond films on dvd (or see go see Skyfall again).

LTK is a classic. I was knocked over with how different and brave it was. It took decades for it to find it's audience. But so did OHMSS another controversial entry of it's time. If you read Fleming then it does delight. Yes, it is set in an era way beyond Fleming's writing. But it has that Fleming spirit.

Dalton and Davi are knockouts. It is so rewatchable. Dalton in two films achieved so much for the character and those who credit Craig, should perhaps out of courtesy give Dalton a re-appraisal. This was a gritty and atmospheric film which being too close to the Moore era scared many casual fans away from the franchise.

But, you cannot make an omlette without breaking a few eggs and that LTK did!

The last Bond film with the man's world attitude and Bond refers to that in the hotel room to Pam when she demands equality. "We're south of the border!" he says, "It's a man's world."

I ended up rating it highly due to the structure of our reviews, but I really do not enjoy it and probably won't watch it again for another 10 years or so. Too violent, sadistic and brutal (but therefore I had to rate sadism highly contributing to a higher score than I preferred) - also staid/uncreative (head of drug cartel - yawn). Opinions vary, of course. Even having said that, I couldn't fault Dalton, a wonderful Bond.

But I don't want to digress into a LTK discussion; I guess my review stands as is.
I did like TWINE, parts of it quite a bit. My TLD review is coming within 2 days, then I am caught up. :)

I think if you are a true student of the films, you would have to notice that Craig is following in the footsteps of Sir Sean and Dalton and recognize Dalton's contributions. Some of the newer fans who joined during this era will see this as they explore the past.

I also think QOS will someday follow the path of OHMSS and LTK and be more appreciated as time goes by. I enjoy it more and more each time I watch it.
