  • It's great to locate a new oldster, Welcome @vzok! And @CommanderRoss, no matter your age, your input is always gladly received! @Birdleson: no, I don't remember The Legend of Lobo but I'll be checking it out ASAP!

What @barryt007 meant when he referred to himself as an "original" , was that he was on the old forum, before the namechange.

    Thanks for that clarification, @Thunderfinger.

And now I see why I didn't remember The Legend of Lobo, @Birdleson. Disney's Lobo was the story of an actual wolf, not a human character nicknamed "Lobo," which is what I was expecting! I was thinking of the historical characters covered by Disney, like Davy Crockett (his most famous historic re-creation,) The Swamp Fox, Texas John Slaughter, and The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca. Or the adaptations of characters from existing novels, like Zorro and the Scarecrow. Attempting to duplicate the success of Zorro and Davy Crockett, these TV mini-series always started with catchy theme songs, some of them memorable years later. "Texas John Slaughter made 'em do what they oughter..." Fascinating the way memory works, especially memories formed at our earliest ages.
  • Swamp Fox, Texas John Slaughter, and Elfego Baca are all available for viewing in full episodes on YouTube. I guess there's no commercial market for them so Disney just lets it happen. Dang! Now I'm going to have to see what the situation is with Zorro and Davy Crockett! I suspect there's still a market for them...plus the legal rights to Zorro can't ALL be in Disney's hands...hm. Back to YouTube!

Okay, so it's been awhile since I was volunteered to tabulate the results of our "Classic" nominations, and I've been a bit tardy in posting the results. My apologies to all for any inaccuracies. I'm THINKING that the following qualify as "Originals" per SirHenry's definition, if my impression is incorrect, please let me know and I'll try to adjust the results without letting my poor little head explode: @4EverBonded, @OHMSS69, @Birdleson, @vzok, and Yours Truly, @BeatlesSansEarmuffs. @chrisisall, where are YOUR nominations???

The input from @CommanderRoss' friends resulted in some of the less loved films receiving nominations. As far as I'm concerned, that's a very good thing! Even if it did make the computations a little more complicated...

That stated, here are the results as best I can figure:
    DN: 5 Originals, 19 Total
    FRWL: 5 Originals, 19 total
    GF: 5 Originals, 19 total
    TB: 4 Originals, 12 total
    YOLT: 1 Original, 12 total
    OHMSS: 4 Originals, 18 total
    DAF: 1 total
    LALD: 2 Originals, 8 total
    TMWTGG: 2 total
    TSWLM: 3 Originals, 13 total
    MR: 2 total
    OP: 4 total
    FYEO: 3 Originals, 8 totals
    AVTAK: 1 total
    TLD: 2 Originals, 4 total
    LTK: 1 Original, 6 total
    GE: 5 Originals, 15 total
    TND: 1 total
    TWINE & DAD: No nominations.
    CR: 5 Originals, 19 total
    QoS: 2 total
    SF: 3 Originals, 11 total
    SP: 2 total

Anybody who wants to pitch for one criterion or another for evaluating the results is welcome to do so. I'll just state for the record that the films who received A TOTAL OF 10 OR MORE NOMINATIONS were:

DN: 19, FRWL: 19, GF: 19, CR: 19, OHMSS: 18, GE: 15, TSWLM, 13, TB: 12, YOLT: 12, and SF: 11. That's 10 films receiving nominations from more than half of the respondents (counting @CR's friends as one unit.) I'm willing to let these 10 stand as our list of Classic Bond films. Any dissenters? Can I get a vodka martini over here?
  • We could certainly go with that as the Originals' list of (00)7 Classic Bond Films and the other as the Combined Thread list. I'm too tired to dispute the point. Where's my martini, damn it all?
  • Two lists. No martinis (yet.) I may have to settle for a beer...

The one surprise is that YOLT gets a lot of votes from the youngsters, but not from the originals.

Postal Service on the weekend is an iffy thing, it'll probably get here Monday. Thanks, @Commander! For now, it being Sunday morning, all I get is ~O)

FYEO got a respectable turnout, but it doesn't surprise me that GE out-polled it. FYEO is the "down-to-Earth" Bond with a less than memorable villain and the end result of "That's detante, comrade!" GE was the spectacular return of Bond after a long hiatus, with a memorable villain and the installation-shattering destruction of a huge, imaginative plot. GE is "Inwincible!"

  • Get it? My "Spam" filter? Geez! Okay, going a little further...

Why, my computer, it's so old it's practically prehistoric! I think it was originally owned by a fellow named "Flintstone." I opened it up once and found a Tookie-Tookie bird inside! That's why any consumables being emailed to me get caught by the Spam filter -- poor ol' Tookie HAS to eat SOMEthing!

Ah, it's Monday morning. Nothing's funny on a Monday... [-(

Monday is not a laughing matter @BeatlesSansEarmuffs !

As for my take on which Bond movies can be allowed to be called classics:

    DN
    FRWL
    GF
    TB
    YOLT
    OHMSS
    TSWLM
    GE
    CR

SF might be too, but that's 6 years too early to tell.

Are you kidding? QoS ? LMFAO
That movie should not be mentioned in the same breath as FRWL
From the bad theme song to the weak Bond Girl, to the horrible villain, to the disjointed and all over the map story...

At least one Pierce film got into the top 10 and it was Goldeneye
  • I'm actually disappointed we didn't have one of Dalton's qualify as a classic. No sarcasm, no emoticons needed. Really. Dalton deserves better.

So if Eon made an essentials box set it would include

    Dr No
    From Russia with Love
    Goldfinger
    Thunderball
    You only live twice
    On her Majesty's secret service
    The spy who loved me
    Goldeneye
    Casino Royale
    Skyfall

And could divide the classics in 3 diferent box sets.

here im more inclusive with some less voted but including the most voted for each actor And choosing one for a different director with the exception of Craig and Skyfall which still sneaked in the top 10.

I won't inlcude You only live twice since This reprats director with The Spy who loved me and ecah of these imaginary box sets im creating inlcudes the six most important directors in the franchise. Terrence Young, Guy Hamilton, Peter Hunt, Gilbert, John Glen, Martin Campbell and Sam Mendez

That means im including Skyfall which had lost of votes even though it went believe Casino Royale since Cambell appears with Pierce Brosnan so to include a Sam Mendes I choose Skyfall to represent Craig.

These would be named the Introduction to James Bond Box sets.

    Box set number 1

Dr No-Sean Connery directed by Terrence Young
On her Majesty's secret service- George Lazenby directed Peter Hunt
The spy who loved me-Roger Moore directed by Gilbert
Licence to kill-Timothy Dalton directed by John Glenn
Goldeneye-Pierce Brosnan directed by Martin Campbell
Skyfall- Daniel Craig directed by Sam Mendez

    Box set Number 2

From Russia with love- Sean Connery, Terrence Young
On her Majesty's secret service- George Lazenby , Peter Hunt
The spy who loved me- Roger Moore, Gilbert
Licence to kill- Timothy Dalton, John Glenn
    Goldeneye-Pierce Brosnan, Martin Campbell
    Skyfall- Sam Mendez

    Box set number 3

    Goldfinger- Sean Connery, Guy Hamilton
On her Majesty's secret service- George Lazenby , Peter Hunt
The spy who loved me- Roger Moore, Gilbert
Licence to kill- Timothy Dalton, John Glenn
    Goldeneye-Pierce Brosnan, Martin Campbell
    Skyfall- Sam Mendez

So if I'm correct, according to those votes Dalton is the only one who didn't make a classic? I tend not to agree with such a statement.
  • Hey, I'm one of the Originals who voted TLD as a classic. Maybe if all the Dalton fans would have agreed on one Dalton film to vote for, we could have rigged the system!

You only voted that way because it IS a classic.

So where were YOU with two more "classic" votes for TLD? I'm not above stuffing the ballot box in a good cause!
  • So at this point I guess the best question to ask ourselves might be: Why were none of Daltons films voted into classic status? Personally, I think TLD a much better candidate for classic status than LTK, but their vote totals are very close (2 Originals for TLD to 1 for LTK, 4 total for TLD and 6 total for LTK) without an awful lot of overlap. Should the Dalton partisans simply agree to lump all their votes into one pool and thereby gain classichood for one or the other of Tim's films? Shall we argue in favor of (or against) one film or the other? Or shall we just choose another topic to gnaw upon? What say you all? SirHenry awaits your pleasure!

Well TLD is probably the last Bond film with that typical feel which every film had since DN. It also features one of the more believable romances in the series and it's the last Cold War spy thriller. Although it's a bit more serious than Roger's outings the gadgets and the humour are still there. On those grounds TLD was the first mini-reboot of the franchise.

LTK on the other hand has the distinction of being the only film that was made specifically for Dalton. It's the first one since OHMSS that makes Bond more vulnerable. LTK might not be a classic in the tradtional sense of the word, but its boldness and uniqueness surely count for something.
