No brainer for me, it's OHMSS by a mile. The producer credits listed like Dr No, the swagger of the walk, the shot on one knee and the music. Next nearest would be FYEO, great music and then no fade out but straight cut to the grave yard and finally SPECTRE with the teasing hints of Bond music in the distributor images ahead of the anticipated gun barrel return at the beginning. fantastic.

In the Gunbarrel Bond Olympics, my gold medal goes to...

George Lazenby, just ahead of Timothy Dalton

For me these two have a clear lead over the rest and display a natural fluid grace of movement that I don't see in the others

I find Bob Simmons effort to be the weakest, that funny little jump is just kind of embarrassing

Sean Connery's style is similar to that later adopted by Dalton, but there is an unsteady wobble in the half bent rear leg, which Dalton manages to avoid

Roger Moore's efforts are very solid and probably the most realistic, as he braces his gun arm. I think I slightly prefer the second over the first

Pierce Brosnan's lack panache, as do Daniel Craig's first two attempts

However Craig's third attempt is a notable improvement

For me it’s FYEO; it’s just the most exciting, and Roger’s posing is faultless. Is there a key change in there? Why has no one done that again since?
After that it’s got to be Tim in LTK, just the most perfect of the ‘trad’ gunbarrels, although musically Thunderball is probably the most beautiful of them all (I can’t really give any Connery the top spot due to the fairly bad posing though).
And after that it may well be Spectre or NTTD. I really liked the fresh approach in NTTD, and in both I thought Craig did it really well.

Pierce is just a bit stiff and pigeon-chested for my liking, and I don’t get why everyone wrote the music too short for his ones.

GE for me. The distorted and echoey opening that transitions to that low, sinister driving rumble that accompanies Brosnan’s reveal blew my mind when I saw it in theaters.

Agree with the last two posts; GE and CR are probably my two favourite gunbarrels.

It also seems like with GE you get the first really well done barrel animation (IMO).

    Fyeo music is awesome
    TND ditto

But I think Timmy is the best. Probably TLD

I watched them now all on youtube. I realized that Moore's movement is surprisingly slow and the one from QoS is ridiculously fast/short.
The best? I would say OHMSS. Great!
I also like TB because it opens with "JB".
And the ones from Dalton are also very good.
I like GE because the sound is very different and CR because it is a brave and cool variation.
Did you realize that only one movie begings with Bond (when the white or red dot changes to the film material)?

Yes I never really liked that I must admit! For my money the dot should open on a side establishing shot, for it to be Pierce in a pair of glasses was a bit underwhelming to me at the time, and remains so. TWINE is such a grotty-looking film - imagine a Roger film opening with that dreary little banker’s office set.

Yes, it is a bit odd to start TWINE with Bond's face. Why did Apted think the best image to start the movie is Bond with glasses? An establishing shot would have been better or he could have started with the sign of the bank: Almost the same as in OHMSS.

Yes the OHMSS is similarly lacking in scale a bit, but it does at least look nice! And I guess having an establishing shot of Big Ben or whatever would perhaps make the audience think they'd be in London for longer than two quick shots! :)
  • I like Dr. No, OHMSS, YOLT, GE, CR, and despite the pretentious epitaph, SP. It just felt so good having the GB back at the beginning of SP for the first time in 13 years.

Now, if we can just get a 100% back to normal gb for Bond 26, I'll be happy.
NTTD was also very, very good. It was so cool having the PTS open up from the white dot again. So close to being 100% back to normal, I almost didn't mind not having blood.

    OHMSS
    TLD
    LTK
    GE
    CR
    NTTD
NTTD has jumped into the top 5/6 for me. I didn't think I would like the no blood, but I actually do because its foreshadowing of the ending.

Yeah I’d be fine with having the NTTD version onward to be honest. I don’t think we will, I think the new actor will get his own version, but I’d be happy with the current one if he didn’t.

The way they transitioned the NTTD gunbarrel into the first scene is definitely something worth keeping (don't even mind the Universal transition we got in Canada), but I'd like the rest of it to return to a more classic version (even just like Spectre).

Although, having just typed that, you can't really do that first scene transition if they bring the blood back...

Honestly I didn't mind it not being there. I didn't really miss the wobble either - I thought it was stripped back to its essentials and I thought it worked really well. If I'd known those would have been missing before I saw it I would have been unsure, but when I watched it I thought it worked fine without.

To be honest I thought the lack of blood was perhaps less a nod to the end of the film and more just to ensure a smooth transition to the white of the snow.
It's actually a nice bookend with the CR gunbarrel: in that one Craig turns and shoots and the camera sinks back, tracking away from him down the gunbarrel - in this one we track through the barrel towards him. Neither of them feature the side-to-side wobble.
  • I think the blood could have worked fine as a transition. See OHMSS. It would just have to fade away pretty quick.

I must admit I'm surprised to see OHMSS so high on many peoples' lists - I always thought it was one of the worst. From George's gangly moonwalking to the mis-timed music, I always thought it was pretty poor. I like the reflections in the gunbarrel though.

If I was forced to make a top 5:

    TB
    OHMSS
    TLD
    LTK
    GE

Honourable mentions go to DAF, TMWTGG and TWINE.

Dishonourable mention goes to LALD and SF.

All the Pierce's but especially Goldeneye. The look of it was right, the music was updated and his performance of it is perfect. The swagger in his walk, the turn and shoot and the final pose. I wish he played Bond with this level of confidence

I always have a special place for Casino, I'll never forget the audiences reaction to it opening night. It was shock then immediately elation
