Happy 79th birthday to Akiko Wakabayashi (August 26th). And although Wikipedia has it listed as December 13th, (and in 1939 not 1941), since Daikaiju TV is celebrating her today – August 26th it is 😊.

In addition to “Aki”, some of us know her as the gangster moll Hamako (“Dogora”) and especially as Princess Selina Salno (“Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster”).

@PrinceKamalKhan. “Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster” is actually my favorite "comfort food" movie! Ironically, while the movie highlights Akiko Wakabayashi, actress Yuriko Hoshi had a much more significant film career.

For her part, Ms. Wakabayashi has pretty much vanished from the public - even the "recent" photo of her on the internet is about ten years old. I think G-Fan magazine was able to interview her (by e-mail) around that time. I also recall, that 007 magazine had attempted to contact her back in 2017 (50th for YOLT).

I haven't seen it since I was a kid. I'll need to watch it again.

My Toho "comfort food" movie would probably be King Kong Escapes with her YOLT co-star Mie Hama playing Madame Piranha.

Today is indeed ERIC SERRA'a birthday!!!!!

    5968149116066457.jpg

Let's sing along............here are the lyrics:

I know you dream a lot
    Holding on to lies
    And you wait around
For someone to know where you hide
In your dreams, you feel a lot
But you keep it all inside
    And you close your eyes
    It helps keep you alive
    But the experience of loving
Won't take all the pain away
Just understanding for the first time
What you feel inside, love is in your life
(The experience of love, first time)
    And having come this far
    Cherishing your dreams
    You have realized now
How they help keep you alone
    And the experience of loving
Won't take all the pain away
Just understanding for the first time
What you feel inside, love is in your life
Breathing in the scent of love
    (Leave the dreams behind)
Sensing life in everything under the sky
    And the experience of loving
Won't take all the pain away…

Today – September 17, 1970, marked the debut of the “Flip Wilson Show” in the U.S. The program – for those of you too young to remember – was the first successful network variety series starring an African American (The “Nat King Cole” show ran for only one season during 1956/57).

With its’ “in the round” format and catch phrases like “The Devil Made Me Do it” and “What You See Is What You Get!”, it was quite the program for a couple of years.

Every week I create a list of notable events coming up to their 50th anniversary for my personal calendar, and the next two weeks are packed with both the good and the bad from that era.

And today, September 19th marks the 50th anniversary of the debut of the “Mary Tyler Moore Show" on US television.

Ironically, Diana Rigg’s short lived 1973 tv sitcom “Diana” was viewed as a pale imitation of MTM. Note the similarities between the two clips.

Former British racing driver Kenneth McAlpine is 100 years old today.

He becomes only the second Formula 1 driver in history to reach that age. He is currently both the oldest living F1 driver and the most ancient F1 driver still alive (he is the final remaining participant of the 1952 world championship).

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the debut of “Monday Night Football” in the US (September 21, 1970).

Naturally, my New York Jets lost to the Cleveland Browns 31-21. ☹
Nine Year Old Self: “Well the Jets will bounce back and win next week’s game.”
Future Self: “Actually, they won’t. And get use to this losing thingy for the next half century plus!!

*According to Pro-Football Reference, the Jets actually did win their next game, but then went 4-10 for the season.

@Tracy. Still the best "Batman" IMO :)) :)) And that first episode featured the lovely Jill St. John (DAF) as "Molly."

Happy 50th to “The Odd Couple.” Starring Tony Randell and Jack Klugman, the sitcom classic premiered on this date in 1970 (September 24th). It is still my favorite TV show after all of these years and when I feeling down (which I am frequently these days ☹), it always makes me smile – at least for a while.

Note: “The Odd Couple” debut on a Thursday, it was not moved to ABC’s Friday Night lineup until later that year. Also note, the opening tag (“On November 13th Felix Unger….) wasn’t included at first. It was added later, to assure people that Felix and Oscar weren’t gay.

Another day, another 50th anniversary of the debut of a famous US TV show. Today the spotlight is on “The Partridge Family” which premiered on Friday, September 25th 1970.

Note, that this is the opening of the opening of the pilot episode (they modified the theme later on, and a different actor was cast as Christopher for season one). Proposed plot for Bond 26: We find out that Blofeld has had Susan Dey hostage for these last 30 years and Bond has to rescue her 😊!!!

Today is October 5th! And we all know what (and who) debuted on this day in 1962. What may be less familiar – to some of you not named @BeatlesSansEarmuffs anyway – is the large number of “events” that also marked this month in history back in 1962. It was almost as if the stars were aligned.

    Presentation1_0a03ef7e-c9db-454a-8d22-5bf178abe5a9_grande.jpg?v=1475613415

I seem to remember that ABC News (in the US) devoted the last ten minutes of their newscast on the evening of October 5th 2012 to this story. A kind of "in their own words" recounting from Connery and McCartney.

The following is from the New York Daily News’s Joe Neumaier back in 2012 – also making note of the many “pop culture” milestones of October 1962.

    https://www.nydailynews.com/entertainment/october-1962-brought-not-arrival-screen-james-bond-history-book-full-enduring-pop-culture-icons-article-1.1163940

It's been noted that 1962 was one of the great years — if not the greatest — in pop culture. Let's pinpoint things even more precisely: 50 years ago, October 1962, is when it all changed. As the Cuban missile crisis brought the world closer than ever to its end, there was an explosion of beginnings whose aftershocks are still being felt.

Today, October 9th, would (and should) have been John Lennon’s 80th birthday.
Given his love for his adopted home town of New York City, the following video for “Mind Games” is quite appropriate. And try not to smile when John gives the thumbs up sign as he exits from Tiffany’s with a hotdog….you can’t!

    Miss you John.
