Found out that a former colleague of mine, who went into early retirement last autumn, shot himself last month.

Loved the guy, we had many laughs, never saw him down or annoyed. No idea what happened. RIP Terje.

A peculiar thing is that I don t usually dream about work, but around newyears , I dreamt I walked in through the gate at work, and saw him going out (even though we always worked at the same hours)and I wished him a Happy New Year, but he just stared at me, and didn t reply. That stuck with me just before I woke up. Eerie.

That's terrible, @Thunderfinger. Sorry to read that, mate.

Yeah, it s a tragedy. Thanks. He was 62, and his parents are still alive. I feel especially sorry for them.

I'm very sorry to hear about the shocking death of your work colleague, @Thunderfinger. Sadly we often never know what people around us are struggling with below the surface or bottling up inside. I'm always here to send a PM to if anyone is ever finding things tough.

I suppose I know how you feel, @Thunderfinger...rare as this may seem. But I had a very bad stretch in that regard around 1987. Three people I knew quite well tried to commit suicide, and two of those succeeded, including my own brother-in-law who, suffering from severe depression, somehow managed to obtain an illegal handgun for that purpose, and it turned out likely that he had intended to also kill his wife (my sister) and their daughters... which fortunately did not come about. The other one was a fellow trainee lawyer at the time, who for some strange reason stopped his car in a remote place in a forest, doused the interior with gasoline and lit a match. Self-destructive as it can get. The third one, a female friend of mine (not a girlfriend) who slashed her wrists (for reasons unbeknownst to me) was fortunately rescued in time. And the positive part is: I've never had any such occurrence among my acquaintances since then. But it left its mark.

Famed production designer Rolf Zehetbauer, best known internationally for his work on Cabaret (which earned him an Oscar) and Das Boot, as well as movies directed by Bergman and Fassbinder, and at least nationally for his ground-breaking work on the 1966 sci-fi TV series Raumpatrouille, died at the age of 92 on 23rd January.

Several years ago, I remember reading that she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease (which in part led her to retire from public life). And while any lost is painful, the past ten years or so must have been especially hard for her friends and family.

    Thanks for the link @Creasy47.

Since 2OO1 is my favorite film of all time (and always will be), for me, this is especially hard to take. A legend.
    RIP Mr. Trumbull.

Right there with you, albeit with Blade Runner. A definite master of his craft.

Douglas Trumbull one of the very best, love all the films he was involved in and directed.

Thanks for that post on SILENT RUNNING @Fire_and_Ice_Returns. One of my favorite films and a very underrated SCI-FI effort. The ending of that film is among the most poignant in film history (IMO) and has always haunted me.

If you’ve ever read Michael Benson’s SPACE ODYSSEY (2018), there is a very moving account of Trumbull’s sometimes contentious relationship with Kubrick post 2OO1 and how he found himself at his memorial service in 1999.

…he realized that Stanley was still outside. Slipping quietly back out the door, he took at chair, sat down by the open grave, and spoke to his old mentor…

As for me, all I can say is "Thank You."
