I can see your rationale for yours, except for QoS (you already explained TMWTGG)

    Brave list!
To be totally leftfield though, you probably should have gone LTK, as TLD is the more popular choice? 😁

    Least favourite:
    DAF

Agree with you there. DAD gets a response from me, whereas TWINE shows promise but is a snorefest

Yeah, DAD used to be my least favourite Brosnan, but it's gone above TWINE recently
  • Currently all my favorites from each actor are all of their first movies, funnily enough.

Yeah, my lists tend to end up regrettably leftfield. But there is a method to the madness!

I'd say the biggest factors going into how I rate these are "how rewatchable is it?", "does the film know what it is and do it well?", and "does the film deliver a uniquely Bondian experience?"

So, rewatchability. The whole point of these movies for me is sort of that I can watch them over and over. GF is mind-blowing on first watch, but for me, it's less interesting on future go-rounds because the last act is mostly misdirection of the audience. Still a great film, but something gets lost after first viewing. Octopussy, on the other hand, somehow I worry every time that the bomb might go off. And even people who don't love DAF often admit it's extremely rewatchable.

Does the film know what it is and do it well? Goldeneye reinvents Bond as one half of a "dictator-toppling" duo and in the dialogue seems to be embarrassed by the fact that it's a Bond film. Some classics, like TSWLM and YOLT, don't seem to know how silly they kind of are. Diamonds are Forever knows exactly what it is and delivers some hilarious self-satire while still having the Bondian goods.

Does the film deliver a uniquely Bondian experience? Casino Royale, on the whole, doesn't have to be a Bond movie at all. It could be anyone. Octopussy, Die Another Day? These could ONLY be Bond movies. If you wrote Octopussy in a world without Bond, you couldn't make it. Spectre, with its board meetings and ejector seats, has to be a Bond movie.

I'm not trying to make my opinions sound objective, because of course they're not, but given the things I most value in this series, I don't think any of them should be TOO surprising....

Really? I gotta admit I love his performance in it. I find it endlessly watchable just for that.

Yes, DAD. Of course, there are more entertaining sequences in GE and TND, but I find DAD more watchable, mainly because of Xenia and Carver. I like the plot with the satellite (I'm always for the high-tech stuff), the Korean North-South conflict and potentially WW III. There are good set pieces with the cargo plane and the Ice Palace (I just ignore the bad CGI and such), and there's some good action with the fencing and the PTS. I also like Graves and General Moon, and Frost is really good in some scenes. Other characters like Raoul and Mr. Chang have good appearances as well.

    This is an easy one:

    Sean - FRWL
    George - OHMSS ;)
    Roger - FYEO
    Tim - TLD
    Pierce - TND
    Dan - CR

    Sean Connery - Thunderball
George Lazenby - On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
Roger Moore - The Spy Who Loved Me
Timothy Dalton - Licence to Kill
    Pierce Brosnan - GoldenEye
    Daniel Craig - Casino Royale

All basically set in stone with the exception of Connery, since TB and FRWL is kind of a tossup for me.

Mine have changed again, and you might notice a bit of a pattern:
    You Only Live Twice

These have been my top picks for each actor for years now, but I could see CR wavering as we get some distance and perspective on the Craig era.
