Very underrated one. Very cool to see Hackman play with two very different noir detectives in the same decade.

It has been over a decade since I saw it, so definitely time for a rewatch. This is one of Kubrick s very best. Every picture frame is like a well crafted painting, accompanied by a very fitting soundtrack. Sarabande in particular will always be associated with this film for me.
The story is intriguing from beginning to end. 3 hours really fly by. There is some poetry to the whole thing, like the classical tragedies of old.
Being a fan of the spy thriller genre, I was keenly looking forward to this flick. It was pretty good. Not great, but not rubbish either. Directed by Michael Apted (yes, he of the horrendous TWINE fame), it features an all star cast anchored by Noomi Rapace as CIA operative Alice Racine, Orlando Bloom as ex-military Jack Walcott, Toni Collette as MI5 honcho Emily Knowles, and the legendary Michael Douglas and John Malkovich as CIA higher ups. The plot is rather predictable - saving a major city from a bio-weapon. The film moves with the pace and energy of a Jason Bourne rip-off (yep, that character’s influence still pervades this genre, 15 years later) but sadly, without the charisma. Apted has come a long way since his Bond effort though, and directs the action in a far more convincing manner here with some kinetic fight & chase sequences. There are fair degree of double crosses in the film which is par for the course for this genre, and everyone is not who they seem at first glance.
Rapace is quite good as a butt kicking female spy operative, which is unsurprising given her excellent performance in the Dragon Tattoo films. Bloom is quite rugged and convincing even though his part isn't big. Douglas & Malkovich own their roles, as can be expected from the renown heavy hitter pair, even though they are playing predictable clichés of their usual film personas. The film is a blend of Carano’s Haywire and Jovovich’s Survivor with a sprinkling of Bourne. Well worth a viewing for fans of the genre, even if it’s not a game changer and most likely won’t spawn a sequel.
MacGyver: Legend of the Holy Rose

first and foremost before I get into the plot the faux history and the former bond girl I have 2 things I need to discuss
The first is a funny story. I was nearly banned from a MacGyver Forum because I found one of the new actresses quite attractive (literally all i said was she was quite attractive) and commented on it and when they said it's a family show on the forum my response "yeah one that employees former Bond girls seriously" luckily the mods there realized I was not the enemy and things cooled down but with Mrs Licence to Kill herself Carey Lowell here I figured it was worth mentioning
the second is the PTS MAC BUILDS AN ULTRALIGHT!
I don't care how unrealistic it is I don't care the mythbusters said it's impossible I don't care it's one of the best macgyverisms and the self referential humor
"Oh my god I just realized what your doing you know what I think I think your completely nuts" Son of Senator Shannon (whose first name esacpes me)
"Give me a few hours you will know for sure" MacGyver
(Plus I love how Bad ass Mac is "Nope not DEA We're phoenix foundation we find we don't have to cut through as much red tape to do this")

with all of that out of the way
let's talk about the rest of the episode and how it kind of comes crashing down after that amazing opener...
we get a strange bit of faux history about a guy named Ambrose? anyhoo Mac get in on the adventure and one of the issues is clearly Jack Dalton needs to be here. The fact that he loves Adventure and Indiana jones stuff.. . (mac is looking for the Holy Grail essentially)
So I could go through each of the faults as the older I get the more I find elements of the original shall we say silly...
Cons
1. The ridiculous Macgyverism getting out of the torture chamber (actually the whole torture chamber thing is really weird as part of my brain is screaming they would NEVER have a working torture chamber in a museum... I mean sure the lines on some of the rides feel torturous but yeah no.)
2. some of the faux history is a bit to swallow
3. Carrey Lowell feels more annoying here then in Licence to Kill but still she is quite annoying
4. Ring around the rosey as a plot device I am just beyond laughing at this point
Pro's
1. Richard Dean Anderson delivers so much in this and showcases why MacGyver is a different hero entirely (not wanting to deal with the danger but knowing no one else will)
2. the line "No these guys are dangerous" just priceless
3. some of the stealth moments especially in the castle
4. the amazing PTS
overall it's ok up next the worst of the worst in my opnion Good Knight MacGyver..

Definietly a fun film. My only gripe is that it took awhile to get going.
I enjoyed the show while it was on but this felt pretty pointless. It has everything you'd expect from the show, even managing to kill off a cast member, the problem is it really does just feel like an episode of the show. It doesn't feel like a fun big screen revival so much as it does a pointless TV movie, but with a very annoying bit of stunt casting (I'll get to that in a second). How I felt watching it is similar to how I felt watching the last series of Luther. To be fair they clearly didn't have much money to work with, which didn't help, but again raises the question of why bother at all.
The main issue with the film is Kit Harrington. I like him as Jon Snow. But he doesn't seem to be a very good at all outside of that role. He's basically the co lead along with Harry and it's one of the most forced, awful bits of stunt casting I've ever seen. He plays an agent who's known Harry all his life after his dad, an MI5 agent, was killed working with him, and he followed in his fathers footsteps working as an agent with Harry until he sacked him. Straight away this causes problems. They double down on this, it has to be him who brings him in because noone knows Harry like he does (conviniently him nor his contrived backstory were ever mentioned in the ten years or so the shown was on for) he's the only man for the job and they definitely don't only need him because hey Game Of Thrones is popular right, but also, Spooks started in 2002. So how old was he supposed to be when he was working at MI5? He's really, really miscast as this jaded seasoned former operative. He doesn't appear tough or threatening in the least and we're actually meant to believe that the guy walking around with the baby face, the hipster beard and the manbun was working as a counter terrorism agent back in the 90s? The whole thing is so forced, but hey it's a movie we need someone famous to put on the poster don't we. Dull charismaless actor, badly miscast here and seems especially lightweight opposite Peter Firth. Like I said, he's fine as Jon Snow. Fits that part fine. But hopefully this will be a lesson to filmmakers in the future: he isn't a movie star, or at least isn't a leading man.
Anyway apart from that it was decent. Peter Firth is great as Harry, it really is his movie and I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed watching him. The other returning cast members do a good job too, I thought the ending was very cool, the action is decent for the money they had and the story is fine. It would have been pointless but fun/nostalgic for me as I'd basically forgotten about the TV show and this reminded me that actually, I did used to quite enjoy it. But Kit Harrington and his character just sunk the whole thing for me. If you're a fan of the show it's worth watching, nice bit of nostalgia if you can get past how forced and miscast that character is, but if you haven't seen the show I don't know if I'd recommend it. There are loads of better spy thrillers out there. I'd be up for seeing more of Harry in the future but keep it on the telly instead of trying something like this again please.
Been meaning to get around to AMERICAN HONEY, as well as a few others like THE GREEN ROOM, SPRING BREAKERS, SWISS ARMY MAN, and IT COMES AT NIGHT but haven't yet.
Just got back. Soderbergh’s latest heist film isn’t bad at all. It’s got his trademark quirky charismatic characters and playful banter. While I recall his more recent prior efforts focusing on the uber-chic and almost yuppy confines of Vegas, Miami or Los Angeles, this film in contrast is situated in the hillbilly underbelly of North Carolina. In fact I almost thought I was watching an episode of Dukes of Hazzard at times. Why there’s the two redneck brothers and the attractive & suggestively dressed sister. There’s even a jail warden who reminded me a little of Boss Hogg from that tv show. I half expected someone to scream “Hee Haw”! halfway through but thankfully was spared.
The performances are very good by everyone concerned. Craig is especially impressive as explosives expert Joe Bang, and owns the screen whenever he’s on. Channing Tatum and Adam Driver are great as the hapless brothers Logan, and Riley Keough impresses as sister and fellow co-conspirator Mellie. She’s definitely got a bit of grandpa Elvis’s charisma. Young Farrah Mackenzie makes an impression as daughter Sadie, and stalwarts Katie Holmes, Hillary Swank, Katherine Waterston & Seth MacFarlane also have starring roles. The film moves at a very leisurely pace throughout. If Soderbergh had trimmed a half hour or so off the runtime and tightened it up a bit this could have been a far better effort. It’s still certainly worth a watch though, if only to see Craig do his thing as a hick. Pity it will likely suffer at the box office on account of its focus on NASCAR (POTUS) country.
I went in really wanting to give it a chance but as a fan of the anime I just couldn't like it. If you've never seen the anime you might actually like it. If you have seen the anime and enjoyed it, prepare to be disappointed.
Light is nothing like how he is in the anime. His girlfriend in the movie is more like Light from the anime, while light is an unsure guy who's only doing what he's doing because of his girlfriend.
L is pretty close to his anime counter part. In the movie he has fits of rage and lashes out but otherwise he's pretty close.
The best part of the whole movie is Willem Dafoe's Ryuk. He was probably the most faithful thing to the anime in this whole movie. The problem is... he's barely even in it!
Another problem is if you've seen the anime you probably won't like the movie but you kinda need to watch the anime to understand the Death Note and L because they are not explained very well in the movie.
Not bad at all, even if it suffers a bit from the "Seinfeld is unfunny" trope. The original graphic novels were published in the sixties / seventies, but due to them having been pillaged by everyone under the sun, including George Lucas and Luc Besson himself, it looks hardly original now. Still, there's a lot of good ideas (the Big Market), fun scenes (hte spionic creature got quite a few chuckles, as did the Emperor's lunch). Plus, there's Cara Delevingne, looking better than in Suicide Squad, and Rihanna. Still, of the two movies I've seen in the theater in august, Atomic Blonde is still the best.
So much fun and action.
What did you think of the soundtrack?
It took me by surprise when the film first opened up; seemed to be setting up something not as dark as what we end up getting. But as the film progressed, it definitely became more fitting. Overall, I definitely liked it!
Nice to see Barry Lyndon getting the appreciation it deserves, its my personal favourite Kubrick.
Absolutely spectacular and mesmerizing film. Taylor Sheridan used every ounce of film-making knowledge he picked up from 'Sicario' and' 'Hell or High Water' to totally knock it out of the park in his directorial debut. Jeremy Renner gives a powerhouse performance, he was incredibly intense in this film, and so was Elizabeth Olsen. Graham Greene, who hadn't seen in a movie in years, gives an excellent performance as the local police chief. The story/police investigation is quite violent and gut-wrenching, and reaches the last act where the violence erupts unto the screen, the sheer brutality of some of the scenes just left me speechless. This film will definitely be in my top 5 once the year ends.
Need I say anything about this that hasn't been said a million times since 1991?
Superb. The 3D highlights Cameron's skill as a visual filmmaker even more - enhancing existing perspectives and his sense of depth. He also fixes a number of minor issues with the film without going all George Lucas on it.
As good as ever. At the very least, it was amazing to see it on the big screen.
