The Next Three Days. 2010. With Russel Crowe
I could find worse ways to spend my time. Not a bad little thriller. Had an Argo-esque ending but still felt a little underwhelmed once the plot was set in motion. A great cameo by Liam Neeson.

In the film Heat, in the scene where Neil and Eady are talking on the balcony before they kiss, does anyone else think the blue screen cityscape adds something to it? It's more interesting than if it looked more realistic.

I'd have defocused the background a bit more, personally. However, it only really seems apparent in the close-ups and yes, it certainly adds a very dream-like quality, helped by the choice of music and two rather superb performances.

The line about bio-luminescent algae was extremely apt for the setting.

    Yes, it was. Great scene.

    Avengers Endgame.

So glad I missed all possible spoilers after seeing the movie last night. Can't believe that 3 hours had passed by so quick which is also testament to how much I enjoyed this film. I suspected a certain outcome but was certainly caught out by 2 others. Well worth the wait.

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom 1984

After watching it's predecessor which is a masterpiece, while I think Temple is entertaining it does make me realise that unlike Raiders it's not a film I could watch tomorrow again without any reserves.

Temple of Doom has considerably dated more than Raiders. Yes the opening is glorious, that Busby Berkley style musical into the thrilling fight right through to the pilotless plane set piece.

It's once the film touches down in India that it loses momentum, the whole idea of the white saviour just leaves a nasty taste.

Also, that banquet sequence makes me cringe the cultural stereotypes are incredibly awkward and while it might be amusing to some, I find it quite embarrassing.

While Raiders seems to strike the perfect tone, it takes itself serious but not enough to become po-faced, whereas it's follow up an actual prequel that takes place the year earlier is all over the place.

That being said Ford is on charismatic form and Capshaw is total anthesis of Marion Ravenwood, either highly annoying or just a different damsel in distress. To be honest if she'd been like Allen's character it would have felt like going over old ground.

The film does pick up again as soon as Indy escapes Mola Ram's clutches and shifts into gear and hurtles towards a semi satisfying ending as the white guy arrives to save all the helpless villagers. Yes that was sarcasm.

Indiana seems that more in comfortable and satisfying territory when dealing with the Nazis and not so when he's dealing with the occult and aliens.

I remember when Saving Private Ryan first came out, the desaturated grass looked so strange, so grey... now, with so many films aiming for the same visual style, it has lost that impact.

Went to the earliest screening, where there weren t that many people. Mostly kids. I guess these superheroes are primarily a movie phenomenon these days. The comics have become secondary.

I found this to be mostly a fantastic conclusion to the epic saga.

Glad so many people enjoyed it. I’m one of the only people I know who is tired of the comic-book film craze - particularly the Marvel Universe. Just not my thing. After the first Iron Man and Thor, there were only a few here and there I enjoyed. I think the main reason is just that I’m not a big fan of the big universe idea. I much prefer the self-contained approach.

Definitely worth a watch, quite interesting take on this kind of thing, see what you think of it and if it works for you, I'm sure I've heard some call out holes in the idea but my Wife and I enjoyed it when we saw it a few years back.

    Batman Forever

    where do I begin...

first it feels like Val Kilmer and Nicole Kidman are in a completely different film... they are in a serious dark and kind of adult batman film

Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey are playing for the kids (poorly I might add)

the rest of the cast is a mix

Chris O'donnel is far to old to be the "boy wonder"

And where did Two Face go after he killed Grayson's parents

over all its a mixed bag but I liked Kilmer as much as I did that I am gonna bump it up higher then it should

    Films I saw in 2019

While this review is on the negative side he does make several valid points; this is the balance to those who think that the film is perfection. The reality is that it falls within a range that is somewhere in between , for many to the positive but for some more to the negative.

Yes, I agree with him on a couple of things-characters we don t care about and putting every character in the final fight.

Le professionnel with Belmondo verges on very good. The damned script needed more work, though. Some things make little sense and character aspects of the story could've been explored in more detail. I wouldn't mind seeing a remake of this. Problem is you'd have to replace Belmondo. Not good.

Dujardin? Maybe in a few years. A few more wrinkles would fit.

I love how Roy sees the explosion at the end of The Guns of Navarone from his hospital bed. Knows they succeeded. Very cool.

A blind buy, as I have enjoyed most of what I have seen by the Coens. Bizarre and fun as usual. The Coens have an ability to make the most mundane stuff grab your interest. Not among their very best, but I was never bored.

    American Animals 2018

Ticking all the boxes, directing, script, acting and competently paced.
Definitely worth a watch. Possibly the most inept film heist since the granddaddy, Dog Day Afternoon, these dopey lads at times made Sonny and Sal look quite capable.

Barton Layton impressed with Imposter, although his efforts here definitely mark him out as someone I'll look forward to seeing where he goes next.

Detective Pikachu That was not good. I expected better humor from Ryan Reynolds. The plot and acting were genuinely terrible. Avoid this travesty.

Take The Towering Inferno, bolt on some Die Hard, then duct tape a jet engine to them, and this is what you get. Not a bad way to spend 100 minutes.

@MajorDSmythe Dwayne Johnson really is a charismatic action star. Skyscraper was a pretty fun disposable action flick that The Rock really carried on his shoulders.

He's done alright for himself, for an on/off again wrestler. I was looking at his IMDB page and there's a Doc Savage film listed as announced. It'd be great if that lead in some way to a new Shadow film.

THE SHAPE OF WATER (G. Del Toro, 2017)
    fb8a1c43266ad5260fdd2bc207e70f31c133ce567c064ceab0a1d26f39642d61-691x1024.jpg

Fantastic movie, one that pulls at the heart strings. Like PAN S LABYRINTH, one of my favourites, it reads like a modern fairy-tale, in this case a variation on BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Cannot help but think that Del Toro drew some inspiration for the South American sea creature from Abe Sapien.

The villain, Strickland (Michael Shannon) has the best line:
"The Lord looks like a human. He looks like me. Or even like you. Maybe a bit more like me, I guess."

Also love that he is reading "The Power of Thinking Positive".
