Its not particularly good the poster is the best thing about the film, the director and the cast is the main reason I watched it. The movie is currently on Amazon Prime Instant Video (UK)
  • The Witch
Quite late on this one, but I thought it was a very effective horror film. I loved how the dialogue was pretty much straight from the 1600s, and not our modern day language. The focus on the destruction of the family I found very impactful. Anya Taylor-Joy is a star! Really looking forward to Robert Eggers second film The Lighthouse which I think is released soon, if not is out now.

Personally, I found The Lighthouse to be far superior of the two. The Witch was okay, but quite a good deal overhyped. The Lighthouse was awesome - one of my favorite horror films ever. Just my own opinion anyway.

Been marathoning the Scream series. Rewatching Scream 3 (2000) really reminded me of Spectre.
Unfortunate how they randomly make the main villain (who is obvious and not interesting) responsible for everything to come before. Killing off Cotton so early was another really big problem; he should have at least made it to the end of the film.
This film has a lot of issues. I love all the other movies in the series though.

The SAW series made the same mistake. All of these retcons are worthless. It's soap opera writing at that point. Everything has to be interconnected. During a first and second film, the storytellers want to build an expansive universe. Then, suddenly, they decide to narrow it down again by syphoning everything that's happened down to one single culprit. Terrible!

It just feels so cheap and unearned when it happens. Luckily the other films are very good in the Scream series; 4 particularly redeems it for me since the villain is unique with unique motives. They totally ignored the events of 3 more or less which was good.

    Lost Highway (1997)

For me Lynch's last really good film. The barmy plot has Bill Pullman suffering a 'psychogenic fugue' and changing into a different person while on death row. What follows is as mad as a bottle of wasps, but it's a creepy, haunting film with gorgeous photography and that 'Lynch' sound.

A good cast. Pullman is suitably intense as the troubled Sax player, as is Balthazar Getty who is a dead ringer for Charlie Sheen in this.

There is a bloody creepy cameo from Robert Blake, but best of all is Patricia Arquette effectively playing two different mysterious and sultry parts.

Really cool soundtrack to this as well.

Oh yes, he is amazingly devillish there. Billed as "Mystery Man".

In addition to visiting my family and paying respect to the dead, I managed to watch a few movies :

    The Torture Garden : Nice little horror movie from Amicus;

Ukradená vzducholoď (The Stolen Dirigible : a very good Karel Zeman movie, where Captain Nemo himself makes an appearance.

Dracula, Prince of Darkness : There's no doubt about it : Sir Christopher is and will always be my Dracula. BTW : Charles and Diana ? Prophetic or what ?

And last, but certainly not least, Spirited Away, another Hayao Miyazaki masterpiece.

Add to that the last three episodes of Raumpatrouille Orion, and some ten episodes of K-9 (the Doctor Who unofficial spin-off), and you'll see that I had a very busy viewing schedule.

Brilliant, allegorical, trippy French-Czech animated feature. I call it the Zardoz of animated films.

The Shining (1980). I watch this movie so many times, but only grow fonder and fonder of it. Everything is done to perfection, and there's nothing else like it. Forever a favorite.

I'll be seeing Doctor Sleep (2019) Tuesday. I'm setting my expectations low, especially in comparison to The Shining, but hopefully it's a decent film.

    Joker

Well, what can I say... Phoenix was brilliant, is brilliant and will always be brilliant.

How much of it comes out of his delusional mind? we'll never know for sure, apart from the meetings with that black girl.

It's also closer to the comics than I thought it was going to be. (Killing Joke, The Dark Knight Returns, Batman Beyond)

Don't forget: people who have suffered throughout their youth should not be ignored...

I re-watched The Shining on Friday and saw Doctor Sleep on Saturday. It's a completely different beast, a bit on the nose at times, but I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

Ewan is pretty good in almost everything he's in imho.

Last movie I watched is The Hard Way. We were discussing it with @barryt007 the other day. I loved this film, most fun I've had watching a movie in a while. Very funny but not without a sense of danger. The characters make this film; they are comedic but they also come across as real people, and you root for them, especially James Woods with his complicated relationship with his girlfriend. The acting is great from everyone in the cast, not only Woods --who is just perfect at playing intense, neurotic characters-- and Michael J. Fox --who proves terrific at comedy beyond his comparatively more straight-faced acting in Back to the Future--, but also Delroy Lindo, Annabella Sciorra and Stephen Lang (as a seriously creepy killer). A few highlights: James Woods' first scene with Delroy Lindo, the pizza scene, the subway scene and the climactic sequence. But really, the whole film flows so well from one terrific scene to the next. I now feel like watching some more work of the leads and of director John Badham (Nick of Time, perhaps?).

P.S.: What's with Fox's giant canvases of female anatomy in his house? Haha!

My kid and I are working through the DC movies. Here's what we've watched so far:

Man Of Steel I like it.

Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice - Ultimate Edition Below average.

Suicide Squad - Extended Edition Just complete GARBAGE.

Wonder Woman I actually ADORED EVERY MINUTE of this movie. Best film out of this lot, easily.

    Justice League Juvenile, pathetic dog.

Two out of five batting average, there. Aquaman and Shazam evened out the DC scores for me.

    The Predator (2018).

Have to say I absolutely loved this one, basically what made the film for me without question was the humour once the lead character was in prisoned along with the other military prisoners. :)) :-bd

Doctor Sleep (2019). Overall I was very impressed. Ewan McGregor gave one of his best-ever performances as grown-up Dan Torrance; I really felt for him and rooted for him the whole way. Kyliegh Curran was excellent as Abra Stone - seriously good young talent. The other cast members all do a good job too, but the biggest standout is Rebecca Ferguson as Rose the Hat - one of the most memorable villains I’ve seen in a while.

The stand-in actors for Jack and Wendy were necessary, but no replacement for Nicholson or Duvall. Still a better alternative to CGI. Carl Lumbly was spot-on as Dick Hallorann; his scenes were some of the best. There was no way The Shining was going to be topped, and though I have a couple issues with the film, it does a very admirable, respectful job at following it up. Reminds me a bit of Blade Runner 2049 as a very good sequel to come out years later (better than most other sequels), even though inferior to the original.

@FoxRox Glad you enjoyed Doctor Sleep, probably my favorite horror film so far this year (still waiting to see The Lighthouse, however).

Last night I went to see Ford v Ferrari. Fantastic film. Great performances from Matt Damon & Christian Bale, expertly crafted racing-scenes and a very fast paced film (2.5 hours runtime that felt no longer than 2 hours). I really appreciated that the film was less about the Americans conquering a legendary European race against a legendary Italian car brand, but more about Carroll Shelby (Damon) & Ken Miles (Bale) teaming up to take down both Ferrari & the annoying Ford bureaucracy. It made for a much more compelling underdog story to have 2 characters go up against 2 automotive giants (one of which they worked for, but their bosses did everything in their powers to interfere with their plans). This film will definitely end up in my top 5 of 2019.

Finally got around to watching American Psycho (2000). Pretty neat movie! I thought the reality/fantasy blending was quite well done, and the performances were great. Really entertaining, intriguing film.

One of my favorites. Bale is fantastic in it and I love the nightmarishly dark and twisted comedy the film exudes.

The satire aspect was excellent. It played with some interesting themes.
