It actually began with TESB, initially. At the time the sentiment was a disappointment over it not being fun and adventurous as the original. Too depressing. Ends on a cliffhanger. It wasn't until a few years later it was starting to become more appreciated for taking a darker and more somber path. Especially during the aftermath of the more perceived kiddie friendly/safer ROTJ. Thus it was seen as "bolder" and that gave it a lot more street cred, especially by those who want Star Wars to be darker and more adult oriented.
Which is why I'm very interested in seeing how the ST installments are perceived over time. Not only is there a young generation who view that as their Star Wars, but also future generations who will grow up with the Star Wars films as they are, never having to anticipate during the wait of each installment, come up with pet theories of Snoke's background, etc. It'll just be the nine episode saga... until Disney decides to surprise everyone with an Episode X announcement, and the cycle continues!
I kind of envy them. I wasn't born until after the original trilogy was finished, so when I first got into Star Wars it was just the three films and nothing else. I remember thinking as a kid wondering if these three films had come out at the same time, because I couldn't imagine having to wait years between each installment!
I think her secret writing partner(s) is Jon Favreau. It seems like Lucasfilm would want him for the movies, based on his success with The Mandalorian. He almost directed TFA as well.
It really feels like Favreau came out of nowhere and breathed life into two of the biggest franchises ever in film (Marvel and Star Wars). Who could have guessed prior to Iron Man that he’d be the one to kickstart/revitalize these enormous (understatement) properties?

Looks like we will get a new trilogy of Anthology films, between Rogue Squadron, Taika Waititi’s film and this. With Kevin Feige in charge somewhat, there should be a better chance with this one.

I found the score a mixed bag though in key moments it was superb, I need to listen to the score in isolation.

I feel as though your sentiments mirror Mark Hamill's; comparing his opinions on the sequel trilogy to his appearance in The Mandalorian, it really says it all.
Luke should have been in all the sequels in a big part.imo
He should have been a General making the decisions after all his heroics in the first 3 films made.
I liked that they had Leia in that role. I would kind of have liked if, as Hamill has said, he came back into the narrative when Solo was in danger, maybe had a duel with Kylo Ren, and then watched as Ren killed Solo; much more impact on his death if we had watched it with Luke. Also might have worked to set up Ren as a more credible threat. But then it wouldn't have worked to show Rey beat Kylo at the end with no training. But of course there are already many problems with that.
I agree, Luke should have a more positive and larger part in the sequels.

We could have had some good scenes of Palpatine taunting Luke about his father.
It would have been such a stronger movie. At the very least I don’t understand why Luke didn’t have more scenes as a force ghost. I would have loved to have seen him interact with Kylo Ren.
At the time Disney seemed hell bent on marginalizing the OG characters, they hardly got a look in at Galaxy's edge theme park either.
Han should not have been killed in tfa either, maybe if he had been injured instead of killed would have made for a better story imo.
JJ and kasdan should have done better considering their reputations.
Adam Driver must kop a lot of shit from the fans for killing han ?
