Starting from Sunday 8th March, David Arnold is hosting a five-week slot on the soundtrack music of Bond, playing highlights from the scores, talking about their composition and playing clips of interviews to accompany them. You can listen to the first two-hour show which went out on Sunday here:
https://planetradio.co.uk/scala-radio/player/
(May be UK only) It’s a good listen.

Programme 2 up now, with Arnold's thoughts and picks from OHMSS, DAF, LALD, TMWTGG and TSPWLM.

  • Wonder what he'll make of Michael Kamens effort, which I think is personally often overlooked & pretty darn complex.
I own 2 copies of "Licence to Kill" on vinyl and while short and strangely ordered packs a real serious punch, some of the best "mastering" I've ever heard on a vinyl to be honest.

@mtm. I'm in the US so I can't listen to this :-(. In general what are Arnold's major observations? I know that he has a great love for older Bond scores (YOLT ?). Thanks.
  • Fire_and_Ice_ReturnsFire_and_Ice_Returns I am trying to get away from this mountan!

Great stuff just downloaded the Scala Radio App, I will listen to that later at work.

Edited: The App only appears to have catch up for the last 7 days, I will look online to see if I can find the earlier show(s).

I missed the first 2 episodes, I was half way through the second episode and it cut me off, and was replaced with the 3rd episode. Hopefully the episodes will be available again. Listening to David's thoughts is really cool. To give you alittle context, he runs down through each movie, five films to an episode and picks a handful of cues from each film.
Then gives alittle description of each cue before it plays including instrumentation, what the music is evoking, using words to describe the music, for example one of the "diamonds are forever" cues has a "dark velvety feel" this for me is totally in line with what barry achieved on varying levels from "gold, diamonds, underwater, the feel of a place, I think david also achieved this with die another day, I get an icey feeling from some of that score with the synthesizers also present in "white knight" immediately after the gunbarrel plays.
Maybe that's one ingredient both composers share, able to put the viewer right there in the movie.

@YouveHadYourSix, Thanks for the overview. I only wish it were available in the US.

Yes really worth catching up with for info on his thought process on writing Casino Royale, scoring the auditions for the potential Bonds, and working with Chris Cornell.

Where are you finding them? Has someone recorded them? That's handy.

This week's (Casino-Spectre) was thankfully much better than last week's which got stuck in the 90s and suffered in comparison to what came before (also oddly playing a weird orchestral version of the GoldenEye song instead of the GoldenEye Overture which Arnold introduced). Arnold definitely upped his game for the Craigs.

Apparently this series will be repeated in October with a new final episode showcasing the NTTD score when the film is (hopefully) finally released.

He also recommended this book, which I've not heard of before:

A friend sent them to me, but he had found them online. If you want I can email them to you, @mtm? (And anyone else who wants them!)

Also, Arnold's recommendation is sound. Burlingame's book is very good. The edition I have only goes as far as QOS - I believe newer editions include chapters on both of Newman's scores. So if you're thinking of purchasing, make sure you get the most recent one. I'm sure the next edition will include a chapter on Zimmer's score, too.

Cool thanks for the offer but it's okay: I caught them as they went out. Glad you're getting to hear them.
The one I enjoyed most was probably the Moonraker-Daylights episode: that's a great stretch of music right there.

Great, thanks- ordered. I could only find a 2014 edition but I doubt I'm missing too much.

Just listened to the one that's up now, correct me if I'm wrong, with CR, they had the script and the composer before they had a main man?

I could have sworn he talked a bit more about Barry's contribution to the Bond theme last time..?

There's a good final show in the form of an extended interview with David Arnold by Mark Kermode, interspersed with some classic Bond cues- well worth a listen and available until Sunday:

Ack! My VPN is not playing well with Scala radio, and I was hoping a kind soul would be able to share the prior 4 (or 5) episodes with me?

David Arnold + Bond soundtrack for 10 hours (!) is simply an absolute treat.

Please and thank you in advance!

Mixing franchises*, but taking the opportunity to put up a batsignal plea for assistance from @CraigMooreOHMSS

*Zimmer has now soundtracked both, so ... =D

Is that the interview in which they talk about Arnold's guitar? (Can't play it here.)

    ---

Also, is that NTTD episode Arnold mentioned going to happen after all?

The final normal show of the run had the cues that had been released from NTTD at the time, and the Kermode interview also featured other NTTD cues too.
