In terms of Sam Mendes, aside for the coloring in the area of the Skyfall house, the Shanghai scenes and the ongoing shot at the beginning of Spectre, I didn’t think there was anything special about what Mendes did with his two Bond flicks. The scenes where Bond and Madeline escape from Blofeld’s lair and Bond chases Blofeld down the Thames couldn’t have been more dull.

Damn, No Time To Die may not be released in China. I’ve seen every Bond movie on the big screen since The Living Daylights. This expat isn’t pleased. :(

Hong Kong release is 7 October if that's an indicator. Or if you can get there, @Bounine.

Thanks @RichardTheBruce . I’m not sure if I could though. I read that foreign people living in mainland China entering Hong Kong need to do a 7-14 day quarantine and if they return to the mainland, which I would, need to do another 14 day quarantine. I need to work.

It’s surprising. I thought that NTTD originally had a planned Beijing release before it was first delayed. Maybe the government is cutting down even more on foreign films in order to further support the local industry. Cancelling Bond though is taking it too far.

There was just a confidence in the camerawork and the ways scenes were shot. Like Steven Soderbergh, Mendes has a visual style that is all about right angles, geometric shapes, and squaring the shot. A good example is the casino scene in SF, when we get the shot of Bond, from behind, raising his glass to Severine's bodyguards. It's perfect: the lighting, the mahogany of the wood, and the angular lines of perspective created by the bar and the lights. And then there is the almost halo-like effect around Bond's head. This is pure art.

There is a similar approach to the Spectre meeting. Here, Mendes does a nice, slow move in on Blofeld. Even the water in the pitcher reflects the light just right. The entirety of that Spectre meeting was expertly shot.

Maybe Mendes and Campbell can direct a Bond film together. Mendes for some of the artier shots and Campbell for good action sequences. :)

Mendes notoriously shoots a lot of footage, so the editing is key. Compare SF to SP.

That's one way of looking at it. Though Marc Forster is my fave director for the action sequences.

Think that would have been more down to second unit director Dan Bradley, agree the action is excellent in QOS!

I hope this means that NTTD will actually be released in cinemas here in China:

    https://www.mi6-hq.com/news/china-lifts-blackout-on-western-film-releases-210820

I thought the action in QOS was alright but it was a bit up close for my liking. I preferred it in CR.

As much as I like Craig as Bond, he is looking a bit on the old side now:

    https://www.mi6-hq.com/sections/articles/no-time-to-die-world-premiere-confirmed-september-28-2021?id=04925

It worries me a bit that the next actor to play the part won’t live up to him. They’ll have to do extensive auditions I reckon. I’m still keen on Tom Hardy. The only thing I don’t like about him is that he has feminine lips.

In terms of directors, I’m still for Lars Von Trier! :)

If Fukanaga does a good job, then I’ll be keen for him to return. I’m keen on Campbell too. I think CR was shot pretty well. Yeah, Campbell could try to throw in a few more artier shots though.

Mabey Martin Campbell can do another one if:

He work with previous crew members who work on Bond 26 who return from NTTD.
It be second movie from new actor, doing Bond 27.

Fukanaga should do another one with Bond 26 if not new directer and then Campbell can buld on that. A part of me stil believe his ''complanes'' are part of the lie game (he knows more about Eon future Eon have in mind after CR)he play with producers, but if there is some true in it then he can better contuned on prevouis work or agree making two in row.

I like refreshing that QOS and Spectre brings that remember the earlier days, CR is moost outsider of this. If Campbell coming back it shouls closer to Goldeneye then CR. Difrent cinematography and what he will bring if he work with Dennis Gassner (QOS/Skyfall) if guy from NTTD was one time thing.

What Danish actor of actres he and Debbie Mc Williams will have this time in mind ? (Or better pick Denmark as location with more then one Danish actor/Actres and Extra's)

I can’t see Nolan making the type of Bond film I’d want to see... although his admiration for OHMSS is noteworthy.

I keep circling back to these three:

    Denis Villeneuve
    Martin Campbell
Cary Fukunaga (assuming NTTD is strong - fairly certain it will be. Need to see what he can do with fresh material)

Luckily for us Bond fans, two of three of these guys have 20-30 year careers ahead of them.

    +1

The fact he's been able to (so far seemingly) make a film that's following continuity feel incredibly fresh, makes me really want to see what he could do with a clean slate.

    Nolan
    Denis Villeneuve
    Damien Chazelle

these are my personal favorite picks for who I think could do a lot of justice to a bond film. Luckily they also have all expressed interest
  • Paul King would be a great choice. I'd love to see a more lighthearted run of films.

Christopher Nolan jumped the shark. I would be surprised to see him come in on Bond 26 since (a) after you jump that shark, you must redeem yourself, and not with the next Bond film but at least one other in between, and (b) he JUST MADE A SPY MOVIE ! Even if you like Tenet and do NOT agree that C Nolan jumped that shark, he would not likely make another spy movie so soon !
I am concerned about statements promoting the F&F director. People claim he's great with action and propelling a story along...WHAT ? A tremendous amount of it is CGI and those stories propel so quickly along they leave a number of things behind or not addressed. So, are they popular ? Yes. Does this mean the Bond producers should dumb down the films to get mass audience appeal ? Been there, done that. The next films need not be a serious as DC's films, and it's time for a tonal shift, but not all the way to "whoa, dude, look at that !"

    1. CJF again
    2. Villeneuve
    3. Alex Garland

    4. Anyone else

  • Alex Garland is a pretty interesting choice! I could get behind that provided well it didn’t go too far down the sci-fi lane. Jury is still out on CJF but I’m sure he’ll knock it out of the park, Villeneuve in my opinion has eclipsed Nolan as the “obvious” choice if they go for someone new. I think between Inception, Tenet, and TDK trilogy, Nolan had scratched his Bond itch by now and probably wants to move beyond the spy genre.

99% chance that Cary will make Bond 26. He said in an interview that he wanted to do another one and Barbara will give him priority given the reviews and the good results at the box office. I'm confident too for the return of Phoebe.

I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I’m 100% on board with Cary returning for a clean slated Bond 26. His hands were tied trying to thread together all the loose ends of Craig’s run. And he still managed to deliver (it appears). Can see him doing a stripped down, thriller style Bond with a tight story and oozing style/color.
  • My top three choices:

    - Cary Fukunaga: while I liked NTTD less than CR or SF, I think it's one of the best directed Bond movies yet, and I am pretty sure most of the things I dislike about it come from the Purvis & Wade script. A Fukunaga Bond film written by him alone or by him and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (but without Purvis & Wade) could be really really good.

    - Christopher Nolan: one of the best big budget writer-directors of our time who also happens to be a huge Bond fan. What more can one ask for? Also, he seems to be unwilling to write and direct one that isn't the first Bond film of a new actor, so this is the time to get him.

    - Danny Boyle: the producers really liked the initial idea by him and Hodge, but it seems there were disagreements between him and Craig. So why not ask him to come back now that Craig is out of the picture?

Either way, I believe EON will need to get a big name for the next one to assure that Bond 26 will be a successful start of a new era. This isn't the 80s anymore when a journeyman such as John Glen sufficed.

No, there is plenty of time. Nolan will finish that film in a year or so. He then can start working on Bond 26 for a 2024 or 2025 release.

From what I read about NTTD before the change of directors-- and I acknowledge the accuracy may be QUITE off -- I would be fine with D Boyle not directing a Bond film.

    As for C Nolan:

    A. He's already scratched that itch, right ? With significant portions of Inception and with Tenet. He simply may not have any creative ideas left for a spy film, especially one which would not have all the action occurring in someone's head, or moving through time, or to have the story told in a mysterious way that viewers get to piece together after the film ends.
    B. He jumped the shark with Tenet, and folks with vested interests in the next Bond film may wish to see Nolan's next output first. I realize this might be feasible, even if Nolan's next film is not yet released by the time the next Bond film goes into production, by "special previews" or simply by him being considered for the one after the very next one.

New French interview where Fukunaga says he is not sure to direct Bond 26 :

"I don't know. It will depend on the timing and the potential of the project. And it's very rare that I do the same thing twice... We'll see where I'm at in my life at that time."

    https://premiere.fr/Cinema/News-Cinema/Mourir-peut-attendre-Cary-Fukunaga-n-est-pas-sur-de-vouloir-realiser-un-autre-James-Bond
  • Yeah sounds like the experience, understandably, burned him out a bit. He sounded much more enthusiastic, or at least less hedged, about the prospect of returning to direct another one in earlier interviews.

I really want to see that project! Also, Cary has done a new interview where he makes the following comment:

You've mentioned before that you met with Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson a few years back to discuss a pitch for a new Bond before it was established that Mr. Craig was doing one more. Launching a new actor as Bond is a much different prospect than wrapping up a sitting Bond's run; I'm curious if any of your ideas from that meeting made their way into this film?

Nothing from that meeting. I mean, I still have a pitch I would do if I had to reboot it, which I'll keep for myself for right now.
