If one things for sure it's that this film is polarizing, even to us hard core fans. Love it or hate it.. Maybe it'll be the new QoS? But I love QoS.. :-?

Yeah. I am worried it will become the only Bond film I outright dislike. If that's the case it could prevent me from going to a new movie for a very long time.
So many modern adaptations of classic characters have gone wrong, IMHO.
I’m definitely getting a little nervous. Some of the things I’m reading on here have me thinking it’s going in my bottom tier. I’ll be seeing it soon and hope I’m wrong though.

People bash QOS, but that scene with Leiter was way cooler than what we got this time around. And there's nothing in NTTD as cool as Bond evading agents through the hotel's inner balconies, as he did in QOS. It's all bang bang (and no kiss kiss).

If only QOS would have bothered to satiate and not be cut up to ribbons.

When Bond and Leiter have a drink together I was so glad to finally see that, and then it literally ends just as it begins.

    Great post.

Mine? I wouldn't call it great literature on the level of Dickens or Hemmingway.

Sorry, nothing against your post , but I meant the one above it. Made me laugh.

LOL. I figured. I was joking around.

NTTD isn't 100% perfect but it's deflating to see any fan dejected about seeing it.

Things might yet go the way of SP and opinions and reviews of the film crash once it debuts in the states but there's plenty of positive reviews on Letterboxd. I no longer rate IMDB as it's always the extremes of 1/10 or 10/10 there.

The end of the film might be contentious to some fans but NTTD is playing in the same ballpark as SF in courting a more general audience than espionage fans.

All depends on how you rated SF.

Well, I love SF. And I love the first 40m of NTTD. I downright hate the rest of it, though.

Funnily enough I love SF until Silva enters and then I feel Bond gets a little lost in the drama between Silva and M.

I find SF very overrated personally but the better comparison to NTTD than Craig's other films for those trying to gauge what it will be like.

Apparently having this movie spoiled is not good. I mean, it's never good, but this film particularly.

I'm purely speculating because this movie will never be released here at this rate, but I do wonder if
    Bond dies or something.
^ Not a spoiler, just a guess. Please don't post the answer here either.

What makes you think this? It's just courtesy not to spoil a movie... and this is the spoiler-free thread. There is a spoiler thread.

I've seen the film mind you, but I'd venture to think none of us would want to be spoiled ANY Bond movie we haven't seen, past or present.

You would be surprised how many people on this forum went for the spoilers. It stunned me as I was very much someone who STRIVED to go in as blind as possible to this film. I know there are people such as yourself who did not like the film without spoilers, but most of the negative reactions I'm seeing seem to be from people who knew going in the ins and outs of the film.

From Ben Williams review on the mi6-hq home page. Not the first non-spoiler review I've seen with a similar comment:
"It remains only to say that there are some pretty serious events that take place in the film that would truly spoil your enjoyment of the film if you were privy to them prior to seeing it. "

That implies 'something big comes up'

I tried to stay spoiler free, but the Big One just kind of fell into my lap, so I came in here hoping to discover that it was a false flag. Nope. At that point I figured it best I be the mod that will stay in here and try to control the insanity.

I saw your earlier comment about that (I think in the ranking thread?) and you're not only the exception on MI-6, you seem to be the exception on the entire internet. Whole massive slew of Bond fans who deliberately looked up the big twists. And I get it, Bond taking off his mask to reveal he was Ethan Hunt all along is a big shock.

Well it is Craig's last film and his films have played more as a character arc than previous incarnations, so it's definitely going to spoil the movie for you if you read about these final developments re: Craig's Bond in advance.

I recommend staying as far away from most internet sites that could feasibly discuss this movie before seeing it... other than this one of course, as I am quite confident the community here is cordial enough to avoid casual spoiler talk (other than in the spoiler thread of course!).

If Bond premiered the same night in the US as the UK, I’d have an easier time staying spoiler free. Otherwise, I can’t help myself.

I really wish more critics had found a way to write about this film the way I had for the FilmSpeak review, assessing the film while just avoiding the plot.
  • So I’ll try to word this carefully… I’m aware of the big plot point(s) that were revealed on this website on June 3, 2020 in an article titled “Spoiler Warning”. That article covered info revealed through a script / casting leak.

Outside of that, I’m pretty sure I know of the villain’s main evil plan. The latest James Bond and Friends podcast implies (I could be wrong) that Safin has another goal after his main plan. If he has a secondary plan, I truly have no idea what they might be referring to.

My question to those that have seen the film (and obviously don’t spoil it) - are there any other big surprises or plot points for me to discover when I see the film, or have I already stumbled across the big and important ones?

I've just seen it. I think it will take a while to formulate a complete opinion of it and where it falls within my ranking. I definitely prefer Casino Royale and Spectre but I certainly didn't dislike NTTD either.
Regards of how I feel about NTTD or Craig's tenure as a whole, I'm really hungry for a new Bond film where he just gets an assignment from M at the beginning and then spends the film executing that mission without any overly personal stuff.

Most of us want that. And we've all been wanting that for years and years. But they're in love with the "humane and personal angle". So, that's that. No more formula, probably. Just reinventions until it's unrecognisable. You see, these days, that's fashionable.

I also fear those days are long gone. Fingers crossed the next era returns to something like that but I won’t be surprised if they don’t.

They are completely alienated on their own conception that this sort of subversion works and will keep working, meanwhile forgetting that if you subvert long and hard enough, there will be no more thing to subvert, and people will forget the original formula, which worked. There's that popular story about the goose with the golden eggs. But then again, there's also the one about the boy who cried wolf and no one listened :(

If they made a low key very well written spy thriller contained within the original 60s formula and organics, with a sense of escapism and exoticism and an actor who resembled Fleming's depiction of Bond, I'd be over the moon. But they'll probably do another rogue/revenge rookie Bond, this time with a non caucasian (oh, they probably will) actor, with all the "family" drama and familiar new clichés. And I say new clichés because they aren't aware they've build a new formula, and that this new formula is already tired and spent.

Spot on! I watched it last night and overall I'm rather disappointed.

This film really seems to be dividing the fans.

Try to go in with an open mind, and avoid spoilers at all costs. You may be surprised! For me though, being a huge fan of Craigs, i have an awful feeling this film is going to affect the way I look at his other Bond movies! Still cant get over how let down I feel! Actually had a sleepless night, how ridiculous is that??

For some reason I think I will like this one, because most people who like Craigs other films are disappointed by it, so as someone who didn't really have I idea of what I wanted from another Craig film, I'll probably be able to relish the over the top Moore stuff and ignore whatever is supposed to sour it. I do feel for the fans who have waited 6 long years for this, only to be bitterly disappointed by it. Its always the curse for any Bond actor to end not doing his best work. I hope I can find enough to enjoy, apparently they throw everything at the wall to see what sticks, so there is something for everyone.

Saw the movie yesterday. I thought it was a fitting send off for Daniel Craig. Thoroughly enjoyed the movie, but it’s certainly not without its little flaws.

This is EXACTLY how I felt last night too. I actually don't want to watch another Craig film now because of this. It's like this film has ruined his era.

It made want to do something crazy like watch Moonraker, just to cleanse my soul.

Yes, Matera, Jamaica and Cuba were brilliant. But the rest of the film obliterated that instantly.
    100% agree.

Am I allowed to do a Daniel Craig movie ranking?

    1st Casino Royale
    2nd No Time to Die
    3rd Quantum of Solace
    4th first half of Spectre
    5th Skyfall

    99th Last half of Spectre

Just to calibrate I think Quantum of Solace is very underrated and Skyfall very overrated and dreary.

I agree that QoS is hugely underrated and tat SF is ridiculously overrated. Still, I'd place both those films above NTTD and SP and maintain that QoS' opening car chase is still the undisputed champion of Bond car chases.

My ranking after seeing NTTD twice:
Casino Royale (the only way this film can be topped or at least matched is if Campbell comes back for a 3rd Bond film)

    QoS
    SF
    NTTD
    SP

@Mathis1 Not ridiculous mate. Us Bond fans take our favourite spy seriously.

I have avoided most of the info about the film and only watched the first trailer once. So I don't know much about the film at all.

I accidentally saw a possible spoiler from some idiot on FB but I'm hoping it's not true.

After that travesty last night, the only way forward now for the next Bond film for me would be the following -

Traditional Bond film, in the old fashioned way, which includes -

    1) Pre credit sequence with action, lively music song for the titles (more ATAK, LALD, TLD, CR rather than dreary depressing ).

    2) Bond flirting with Moneypenny, in to see M, gets briefed, then pops off downstairs to see Q for the latest gadget - AND THEN WE DON'T SEE THEM AGAIN!!

    3) Bond on a mission with no personal, or emotional ties whatsoever!

    4) The villain is just a bad guy, with no personal issues.

    5) Bond sleeps with women, with no personal connections to them.

    6) Lots of unused Fleming scenes PROPERLY adapted.

As of now, I'm really done with the Craig era, Last night seems to have highlighted everything that has gone wrong with the Craig era, which I wasn't even really aware of until now. And such a shame after CR showed the way, which is one of the best films in the franchise.

No spoilers here, okay: I just got home. It was, for me, a great Bond film! Not just good. I am seeing it again Sunday. It was beautifully done, exciting, with superb cinematography, direction, acting. It exceeded my expectations. I rank it just under Casino Royale. I am so very glad it was a cinema only release, and I hope it does great box office. What a fine film for Daniel to finish up with! Much better than Spectre.

I just want to be doubly clear: do you rank it just under CR among ALL the films, or JUST out of Craig's tenure?

Both, sorry I confused you. On another thread, at first I just ranked Craig's but then I said my overall ranking, for all films in the entire history of Bond films - Yes, I have usually FRWL or CR as #1.
