That's actually one of the few times that the foster brother thing benefits the plot. This Blofeld wasn't just trying to hurt Bond physically, he was sowing the seeds of distrust on a man who had huge issues letting his guard down.

There's also Tanner's line: "Good thing he's not really your brother."

    That's a lovely meta-commentary on SP.

So what was it all about with Madeleine being the daughter of SPECTRE and her sacrifice being their reward?

The daughter of Spectre line is just Blofeld getting inside Bond’s head making it seem like her allegiance lies with Spectre and that she betrayed Bond. I don’t remember the sacrifice line, but I’m assuming Blofeld was saying she was willing to sacrifice her life to kill Bond, hence Primo trying to blast through her window of the DB5. Bond already had one love betray him and then die before he could reconcile that, and Blofeld was trying to do a repeat of that.

Excellent, thanks for that. Seems another instance where something said can’t be taken at face value and is merely meant to get inside Bond’s head. I wasn’t sure if it was something like that or a plot idea that was dropped or never fleshed out properly.

I thought it had to do with the fact that he was visiting Vesper's tomb. Although he let her go, the pain of her betrayal remains and his emotions were high as a result. And all of the sudden, the first woman he's allowed into his heart after Vesper betrayed him as well? He might've emotionally shut down.

Yes, exactly - the wall came slamming back down and that was it. No Time To Reason...

When did news about the ending leak? How much time before the film was released?

The Sun broke the news that EoN wanted to kill off Bond in August 2018.

The call sheet leaks back in May/June 2020 spoiled the very last scene of the film, where Swann drives into the tunnel (scene 253).

One German review I've read said that Madeleine is Blofeld's daughter. I assume because of the Daughter of Spectre line.
And my girlfriend said she was waiting for her to keel over dead in the Blofeld scene, because they so specifically pointed out that she is a daughter (i.e. shares the DNA) of a Spectre agent. Bond still has the Cuba virus in him and they very pointedly don't touch until she wants to get out of the room.
Alas, it's just a throwaway line to make Bond mistrust her and to play up the whole "daughters of Assassins" thing.

Was there an alternative ending were Bond and Paloma end up in a dingy?

Seriously, Bond's yacht in Jamaica the same as the one in Venice from Casino? The name Spirit is behind Vesper when she sees Gettler, not sure if that's name of it

Thank you. That was a long time ago.

It's probably intended to be. In fact, given the obvious wear and tear on the grey t-shirt he's wearing on the yacht, it may even be the same now-ancient t-shirt he wore when he and Vesper sailed into Venice!

Spirit is the maker of the yachts. The model in CR is a Spirit 54, in NTTD it's a Spirit 46. So, if it is supposed to be the same boat, the filmmakers and their product partners made a bit of a gaffe there. I don't think it is supposed to be the same.
Did we ever see a name for the boat in NTTD? Could have been a fun Easter egg/trivia answer.

What is the kid who leads Bond to Vesper's grave about? Did he know what he was leading Bond to? Why does he smirk at Bond on the bridge?
Also why would Bond need a guide, are we to believe he didn't know where the love of his life was laid to rest? Surely he'd have visited in previous years

It's implied that he was reluctant to visit her grave and that he's doing this at Madeleine's insistance as a form of therapy.

Yes, probably ... this Bond has trouble letting go, even with a t-shirt, haha.

I thought Primo was a pretty-good henchman. Maybe not top tier, but still up there in my estimation. I love that someone described his dress sense in the Matera sequence as the douchiest guy you've ever seen in a nightclub!

But I don't quite get what was going on towards the end of the film with his left eye, which Bond blows-up or short-circuits with the watch given to him by Q. Did I miss something? Is that supposed to be another bionic eye, it can't have been the original one ... not that it really matters.

The exact number of bionic eyes in the film is a bit of a course of confusion for me :)

    Because he's working for SPECTRE.

There's nothing to imply Bond ever paid Vesper's grave a visit. If anything, he'd been avoiding it until Madeleine forced him there.

It's the same bionic eye. The one Mi6 has is Blofeld's.

To help clarify, Primo never loses his eye. There are two eyes. The one Primo has and always has throughout, and then there's Blofeld's, which is found by Nomi when she does a full search of him and his cell. Blofeld's is the one analysed by Q.
  • There are only two bionic eyes. Primo has one, that he keeps throughout the movie until Bond blows it up. It is taken out twice in the movie, once in the PTS when Bond punches it out and then in Cuba where it’s being carried around so Blofeld can greet party guests while Primo is dealing with Waldo. The other eye, which Q hacks into, is Blofeld’s eye. It is removed when they scan Blofeld since they find out he’s somehow communicating with Spectre. The two eyes are linked.

It’s amusing how the themes of “eyes and sight” from Spectre manifest themselves quite literally in NTTD.

What were they farming at Safin’s island? What was the point of the poison garden? The weapon is clearly nanomachines so what did the liquid and plant stuff have to do with that? Why is Safin selling his weapon when he talks about being tidy? Isn’t loosing a spreading nano virus on the world at the hands of any old buyer the opposite of tidy? Why is he doing any of what he’s doing once he gets revenge on Spectre?

The most likely, realistic answer is: They originally wanted the threat to be biological/plant based, but that didn't work with the targeted nature the ending required so they included nanobots and never really did the work to connect the two ideas well enough.

My personal in-universe explanation: The nanobots are only the delivery mechanism developed by Obruchev. They are what can't be washed off, they are what is transmitted, they are what is "checking" the DNA for their target and then release the payload. They can "carry" whatever. In the MI6 lab they put something Hugh Dennis was working on in them and Safin possibly put something else in there or re-created the stuff MI6 were using. That only papers over the cracks, but I think it kind of works.
However, it does open up what I think would have been a better plot point: Heracles wasn't invented as a weapon, but as a delivery mechanism for vaccines and cures for genetic disease and stuff. That takes out the pretty tired idea of everyone always wanting to replace 00 agents with technology (which doesn't land anyway) and it makes M's role in the whole thing a little less horrifying. Because as is, he at the very least should resign and probably should be fired and put in front of a judge for breaking the Biological Weapons Convention..

I like that idea and it's much more in keeping with M's character, in my opinion.

Is it Primo's on the cushion? Do we see him without it?

It's why he's wearing the sunglasses, and when the bald man holding the pillow dies due to the nanobots, it falls off the pillow and rolls around, before Primo picks it up and puts it back in during the chaos.

We see him pick it up off the ground after the three gentlemen carrying it die and puts it back into his empty eyesocket.

We see him putting it back in, in the ensuing chaos. Cant remember if we see him without it.

Hey, everyone, thank you for your detailed responses above regarding the two bionic eyes. It also makes clear now the recorded scene where we see Ash recruit Primo for Team Safin.

But it raises another question, how the heck did Blofeld get away with wearing a bionic eye while in his cell? He was being monitored. Surely someone would have noticed a Blofeld that suddenly had two eyes?

Again, not that any of this detracts from my love & enjoyment of the film ....
