Is it impossible to agree on everything Bond?

Yes. Absolutely. Even when people love the same film, or the same actor, or the same director, it will be for different reasons. I'll repeat what I heard Mendes say in a great interview with Charlie Rose. Unlike other franchises, virtually everyone has seen a Bond film, and everyone has opinions on them.

i personally have From Russia With Love and Casino Royale as my number 1 and 2 respectively (Connery and Craig are also my favorite Bonds)... I've seen quite a few rankings on here, where people have rated those two films towards the bottom of their list......... it really just boils down to personal taste - and not everyone likes the same thing....

but i do personally think there is a lot of grey area, where a lot of people will "sort of agree" on varying Bond issues - but i think it's impossible to think - much less expect everyone to be on the same brain wave...

what shouldn't be hard to expect is tolerance - something this place has gotten progressively worse at in recent years.

Tolerance for people who rank CR and FRWL at the bottom?

some people like a nice well cooked steak - while others prefer a cheeseburger and fries... Some people like Metallica, some like Nickelback... I don't think it really matters where one ranks each film on their own personal scale..... if someone ranks DAD as their #1, and CR at #24 - fine.. it's not like i take it some personal offense to it.... i might think they are a bit off their rocker lol, but it is what it is..

its not impossible, but highly unlikely to meet up with the person that agrees with you on everything bond .

I usually don't even agree with myself looking through my own rankings of old. :)

I think hardly any of us have a complete ranking set in stone anyway. It usually fluctuates depending on mood and recent viewings.

thats kind of my view on things as well...

to me, the only Bond movies that are set in stone are my top 2, and my bottom 2 - the other 22 in between those can fluctuate - because in all honesty, there is really only 1 Bond film i dislike... the rest i enjoy... there might be times when DAF or AVTAK get more rotation than others (and those are two Bond films I don't regard as being "exceptional") - but like you said, it depends on my mood, and at times, i am in the mood for more of the fluff than something serious...

I think Die Hard Three came as close to a Bond film as you can. An epic robbery, by
A nasty organisation, and very much on an epic scale.

I always felt that the robbery angle was a bit Goldfinger in Die Hard with a Vengeance. And the brother angle was a bit like what they were originally planning for Diamonds Are Forever - the villain was going to be Goldfinger's brother. And the Simon Says shtick is pure Dirty Harry.

Quite agree. I think there's a little influence GF in DHWAV and a little nod to it when one of Simon Gruber's cronies comes out with the quote "Knock off Fort Knox?". A great little nod to GF.

:)) I never noticed that line before but yes it is exactly the same as in Goldfinger.

If you are looking for someone with TMWTGG as his top Bond film, I'm right here. :-c

I think that answers the original question. If there are people out there who have TWTGG as the best Bond film then an advocate of every variety of combination of the 24 films must be out there.

Christ there's probably even someone out there who has DAD top!

Nah, even Lee Tamahori has apologised for it.

    Has he?

No, he hasn't. He took responsibility for the wind surfing scene and admitted he got that wrong. Probably wishful thinking on my part.

I think it is, you might agree on most things with the people who like the same Bond actors but it's impossible to agree on everything

    To the newcomers out there:

Has any of you encountered anyone else here you agree 100% with about everything?

I’m a newcomer to this thread anyways, and yes I can think of a member with whom I agree probably 95%. But yes the elusive 100% doesn’t exist for me probably.

Never. But it's always good to know the personal reasons of each fan to elect its own ranking. In the last 24 years, I've constantly changed my ranking, and only on last year that I've finally chosen my favorite movie (by the avatar, you may have a clue).

    Btw, few hours ago I saw this ranking, and I agreed with mostly of the arguments;

There's no pleasing everyone. But an overall a very well-made film can easily be enjoyed by 90-95% of Bond fans.

Certainly. And I'd argue that the only film to really do this is probably FRWL.
CR and OHMSS could be up there too, but I think everyone can agree on Connery to an extent greater than they can with Craig or Lazenby.

I think everyone can agree on Connery to an extent greater than they can with Craig.

Maybe Craig is more controversial on forums like this and by Fleming purists. But this is <1% of the general population.

For the average cinema goer (the 99%), Craig has mostly widespread appeal.

True! But even then, I think there is a subsect of the casual female viewer who views Craig as extremely un-sexy, especially compared to the likes of Connery.

Let s consider the other end of the spectrum.

Has anyone encountered anyone here they disagree with about everything?
  • I prefer it this way because even when you find someone who has similar thoughts on many Bond opinions as yourself but there are a few key divergences, it encourages you to take another look at those pieces of the franchise and engage with them in a new light. If the fanbase was nothing but consensus I think that that might mean there was some stagnation along the line, but because there’s something for everyone it keeps it alive and vital.

Women's preferences aren't homogenous. No one will please everyone.

If anything, polarization is more attractive. Doing what you're best at to the maximum will means some people dislike you, but it means the ones who do like you will love you even more intensely.

Hypothetically, I could see Craig getting a ton of matches on Tinder with that swimtrunks photo.

Of course not everyone will agree, but I'd argue that there are trends that most die hard fans would agree with, particularly those very familiar with the books, and looking for that Bond-atmosphere as well as the various more obvious elements which characterize the "Bond" movie. Certain movies are stronger than others. I have a hard time seeing how films like the first three Connery's, Goldeneye, Casino Royale, For Your Eyes Only, the Spy Who Loved Me, etc. can wind up at the bottom of the list when films like A View To a Kill, Die Another Day or Moonraker exist but maybe I'm off-base.

Incidentally I think Moonraker is a prime candidate for a film re-make. Such a great book, with such a half-hearted film. It's also one which would translate pretty well into the modern era.

Absolutely, and that's why I said it was a subset of women.

I think I was responding to the comment that generally Craig is viewed favourably among casual viewers, and I agree, but I thought it relevant enough to include this perceived group of casual viewers that would not view Craig favourably. Maybe not, and if not, I apologize.
  • I'm really glad there is such variety in the series. Just a glance at people's rankings and personal opinions demonstrates the vast differences in what Bond means to each of us. Whether you prefer gloomy, moody arthouse, colorful 70s kung fu, or cheeky 90s shoot-em-ups, there you go, there's a Bond for you. Every film in the series is someone's favorite, and someone else's least favorite.

As for consensus, sure you could probably say 90+% of Bond fans hold FRWL, GF, and CR in high regard and 99.9% who became fans during the 90s consider GE of tantamount importance to 007's legacy, have perfected their Boris Grishenko impression, and can handily beat the N64 game on 00 Agent with auto-aim off and on Donkey Kong mode. Still, not every Bond fan is aboard the FRWL train (so to speak) and not even every Bond fan who came out of the '90s could tell you what a N64 is.

What matters is that there truly is something for everyone (or none of us would have become fans in the first place) and that variety both gives the series legs and keeps discussions among fans lively.

Speaking strictly for myself, I would find it rather difficult to find someone who rates both Dalton’s films at the top, also has TWMTGG, TWINE and SP in their top 10, who enjoys entries like DAF and NSNA more than GF or SF and who has LALD at the bottom. It is near impossible.

I always love your lists. It's usually like "Oh yeah, this guy knows what's up, he's--hang on, what? Oh Jesus Christ he's mad." :)) With SP at #1 and CR at #25 myself, I can appreciate an offbeat perspective!

Long time lurker, first time caller.

I haven't seen anyone's film ranking on here that I agree 100% with and I think it's extremely unlikely that I ever will. There are now 25 Bond films so, mathematically, there are 15,511,210,043,330,985,984,000,000 (15 septillion) different possible permutations of Bond film ranking.

(If we include NSNA, that goes up to 403 septillion!)

    Haha indeed :))

I think the more eclectic your taste, the less likely it is to find someone who agrees with you on most things, let alone everything.
