    GotG isn't graphically violent, though.

Safe to say the fourth film is in development hell. I don't think it'll happen either .

Ok. I haven't seen it, but I'm assuming it's more violent than the original Austin Powers.

I think Powers style humour could translate internationally very nicely these days.

GotG was fairly tame if I remember correctly. I've only seen it once though.

I really thought it would've been a slapstick comedy, but some of the dramas are overplayed in it. I don't know how the second one will fare with me as I'm going to see it next week.

As much as I'd like to see an Austin Powers 4, it's unlikely at this point.
    • Verne Troyer's death
    • Myers developed a reputation of being difficult to work with in the mid-2000's
    • Where exactly do you take the plot now that Dr. Evil is a good guy. They'd need to find a new villain to replace him.
    • It's been 19 years since the last Austin Powers. With that long of an absence, older people may have lost interest; and many younger people may not be familiar with the franchise. It may sell half as much.

If it happens, it'll probably be a low-mid budget project as an Original on some streaming platform rather than a big box office movie.

What if AP4 is a parody of the Craig era? Which sort of pokes fun at films that try to be overly serious, violent and macho?

Maybe they can cheap one out for Netflix, but indeed, it's very doubtful that there's an audience for this one. Some fabs are very hard to bring back. Think Bill And Ted 3, which received some praise but barely made any money. Austin Powers had a short-lived career: 5 years, and that was 20 years ago. The cosy sugar-and-cream James Bond parody element wouldn't leave much of an impression either now that five Daniel Craig Bond films raised an entirely new generation on a tougher and more naturalistic Bond. I, for one, wouldn't mind another AP, but perhaps they need to move the brand onto a different medium, such as comics. Another example is Batman '66. No way the larger crowds are interested in a live-action resurrection of that series, but its recent comic book revival and animated sequel films were very popular just a few years ago.

I have an story idea for a Austin Powers comic book. I wish I could get in touch with someone who would listen to my ideas, not just for Bond and Austin Powers.
  • I'd probably in the minority, but would love to see a 4th Austin Powers even if it's just a streamer release. It could be a satire on the whole "dust-off-the-jacket, come-back-from-retirement-for-one-last-mission" staple of action films. Powers could also travel back in time again - they haven't done the 1980s yet.

I always thought the ending of Goldmember hinted at where the story could go, with Scott playing the new villain and a fun team-up between Austin and Dr. Evil.

I don't think they could capture the magic after such a long hiatus but I'll forever want a fourth entry in this series.

With streaming services dusting off so many old brand names it doesn't seem impossible, but Austin Powers was so much about that 60s nostalgia that was so big back in the mid 90s that it seems not hugely relevant now. But I guess reviving it would actually be 90s nostalgia, and that's fairly in vogue now! I'm sure they could get Brosnan to cameo.

I'm thinking of some story where Powers is getting on and is mentoring a new secret agent, this new guy is a huge fan of Austin and wants to be just like him, they could satirise the new style of the Craig Bond films with some sort of "we used to be able to do things the fun way, now we have to be very, very serious" type jokes.
Halfway through the film Dr. Evil is revealed, the new guy thinks he's the villain but Austin Powers reveals that they've actually been working together after the events of Goldmember, he tells his protege that they're actually brothers, insert joke about every single side character in all the films, plus some of the crew maybe, are all blood relatives of Austin Powers.
Maybe in a similar vein, Seth Green's New Dr. Evil wants to be just like the villain his dad was and wants to do villainy the old fashioned way with big volcano lairs, lazer tables, sharks with fricken lazer beams attached to their fricken heads, and he's super upset that the villainy industry has been overrun with financial criminals, crooked environmentalists who are super into water (so boring!) and wants to shake up the new world order of villainy.

    Could be good I think.

I don't think Scotty would work as a new villain. The novelty is funny for the last 20 minutes of a film, but it won't stretch long enough for an entire film.

Maybe the next villain can be molded after another one of the Bond villains like Dr. No or LeChiffre, Silva, etc?

Austin Powers 4 could have Dr. Evil as part of a rogue organization that just does trivial things like prank people or break into their house only to leave them money. But isn't exactly a villain. And AP could try to get Dr. Evil's help to fight this new villain.
  • If Myers himself has the interest, it'll happen. Everything in Hollywood is nostalgia-driven these days. They're gradually starting to shift from 80s nostalgia to 90s nostalgia. It won't be long until the time is ripe for late 90s/early 00s nostalgia (i.e. Austin Powers). The third one already introduced a new primary antagonist (also played by Myers himself). They can do the same again. It could be a buddy picture with Austin Powers and Dr. Evil even—or Dr. Evil could decide it's time for him to take over the world again.

Maybe Austin heads into an island to rescue Dr. Evil from a new bad guy, and after helping him escape, Austin is distracted by a Swedish-made penis enlarger pump lying on the floor, which allows the bad guy to fatally shoot him, before breaking a vial of anti-mojo in his face. You know the rest.
  • Hey, if we're spoofing the new Bond films they could make Austin Powers and Dr. Evil brothers!

You forgot Michael Caine retiring - though maybe he could be persuaded back to reprise Nigel Powers?

I would love to see a fourth film, Dr Evil could easily turn Eviiil again, he is very changeable.

They could certainly homage a little from SP now because of the brother plot line. Goldmember has to return.

Mike Myers more or less destroyed his film career with The Guru, what was he thinking.

Also, I think the popularity of AP was at least due in part to one other factor: at the time video clubs were big (heck, they were a thing). If I'm not mistaken, AP had a fairly modest success in cinemas, then was granted a second life and achieved its cult status with video rentals. In this era of streaming, I think a fourth AP movie might be lost in the crowd.

Oh and one last thing: is the kind of humour Mike Myers does really what people go for nowadays? I remember watching Goldmember and feeling sick and utterly not amused by the amount of toilet humour in the movie.

Correct. I liked IMOM and TSWSM, but GM was utter garbage. Goldmember's "fasjer" lingo and his peeling off of dead skin really put me off. If a fourth film gets made, I want it to play more into the comedy of the first film. But one does wonder if modern audiences would like any of it at all.

Sorry, but long term comedy sequels never work out. Ever. Dumb and Dumber To and Zoolander 2 are the two that spring to mind. The first ones are both comedy classics. Both of their long awaited sequels are criminally awful.

We have a damn near perfect comedy trilogy on our hands with Austin Powers, and I don't want a 4th to spoil that. It's not gonna work. Let it be.

Not to mention Mike Myers is as good as retired anyways.

I wouldn't say they "never, ever work. It's rare but it happens; just look at T2 Trainspotting, Incredibles 2, or even Clerks 2.

I was not even that much of a fan of the second one. But I think the humour is quite dated. With Goldmember it was even dated at the time. Not to mention tasteless.

Urine jokes and "Fat Bastard" were slightly tasteless, in my opinion. GM does nothing "slightly". ;-)
