Interesting title, I have been avoiding this thread as dont want to know much about the film's. I can guess what's likely to happen at the end of part 1 though.

"All of this preceded the drop of part 7’s trailer. And let us tell ya something, boy, is it chilling. It begins with Cruise’s Ethan Hunt getting a dress-down by his former opp boss Kittridge played by Henry Czerny from the 1996 movie.

“Your days of fighting for the greater good are over,” says Kittridge.

“This is our chance to control the truth…the concepts of right and wrong for everyone for centuries to come,” continues Kittridge.

“You’re dead and you need to pick a side,” he tells Hunt.

There’s shots of Venice, the Vatican, Cruise in the desert and lots of fisticuffs: On trains by The White Widow (Vanessa Kirby), headbutting by Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson), and an intense scene of an office getting gassed.

The trailer ends with Cruise’s signature stunt for part 7, which was revealed extensively at CinemaCon last August."

I also read some horse chases, motorcycle chases, and tons of running. I need this trailer now.

While it's nice to have a title at last, I do hope this won't continue what feels like is becoming a trend.

I will have to think this over. Dead Reckoning doesn't feel like a MI title. It's a Bogart film and the bus from Land Of The Dead.

Top Gun got a screening too and everyone seems pretty rapturous about it.

Indeed, everyone seems to be loving it wholeheartedly. I finally saw the original for the first time the other day and really enjoyed it.

Can't wait to see the trailer, I don't know how they're going top the last two films but I can't wait to see if they can.
The title will have to grow on me a bit, maybe just Reckoning would have been better?

Could the title be a sign that they are going to NTTD it by having Ethan Hunt die?

I hope Cruise earnestly goes out a full-on villain. It would be one way to top NTTD for sure, haha, and full circle for the (movie) franchise with the twist from De Palma's.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: THE BIG SLEEP part 1

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE part 2

I do like DEAD RECKONING, but there are other Humphrey Bogart movie titles they could've used instead.

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: KEY LARGO part 3

It is a bit generic of a title, but I don’t know what else I was expecting. I do hate that it is part 1, in that it will leave on a cliffhanger without completing it’s story.

I am definetly mixed on Fallout, so I’m hoping this film redeems itself but I am cautious.

    Good title.

    Moonraker, Ian Fleming, 1955.
    Chapter 13 - Dead Reckoning
ON WEDNESDAY morning Bond woke early in the dead man's bed.

He had slept little. Drax had said nothing on their way back to the house and had bidden him a curt good-night at the foot of the stairs. Bond had walked along the carpeted corridor to where light shone from an open door and had found his things neatly laid out in a comfortable bedroom.

The room was furnished in the same expensive taste as the ground floor and there were biscuits and a bottle of Vichy (not a Vichy bottle of tap-water, Bond established) beside the Heal bed.

There were no signs of the previous occupant except a leather case containing binoculars on the dressing-table and a metal filing cabinet which was locked. Bond knew about filing cabinets. He tilted it against the wall, reached underneath, and found the bottom end of the bar-lock which protrudes downwards when the top section has been locked. Upwards pressure released the drawers one by one and he softly lowered the edge of the cabinet back on to the floor with the unkind reflection that Major Tallon would not have survived very long in the Secret Service.

Not only will Ethan Hunt die, but Tom Cruise will literally kill himself on screen for the art.

I wonder if Ethan and Ilsa will be together in Dead Reckoning?
(Almost called in MI7, this is like getting used to calling Bond 25 NTTD all over again)

Apparently she does get to have a swordfight, and he is seen helping her up as she dangles from something precarious, so I guess they are.

Do we think anyone currently involved is being primed to take over? Ilsa? the White Widow?

I'd sooner the series end with Dead Reckoning - Part 2. Nobody else is going to step into Cruise's star-studded shoes and do the kind of dangerous stunts he does, so anything that comes after will likely be inferior. I could see them rebooting it eventually regardless but who knows.

We all know Hollywood can't resists a reboot, spin off, prequal etc etc if they think there is profit to be made. I would like to think that both the Director and Cruise have enough say in the brand to either end on a high or , in some creative and respectful way, extend the series. I wonder if, rather than a member of the existing team taking over, they could go for a whole new team. A clean slate may be better than reminders/throw backs to the "Cruise era".

As for the stunts, the original was superb and that had more focus on character/plot with both commercial and critical success. A great script, direction, cast etc can make up for the lack of huge stunts IMHO

Getting some slight NTTD vibes from this. The M character proposing a potentially dangerous scheme, the office getting gassed, fight scenes in Italy

I’m not a fan of the Ilsa/Ethan thing. I think it was better when they were just platonic agents that had mutual respect for each other in ROGUE NATION, with maybe a hint of attraction. It’s part of why FALLOUT doesn’t work for me because I just don’t buy their romantic potential.

It also just makes me think of Cruise trying to fulfill his fantasy of being on better terms with his exes and whoever he’s dating, the “we’re all one big happy family!”

It's funny, but I think Rebecca Ferguson has more chemistry with her lead man than Lea Seydoux.

Yeah I agree, I find it a little hard to imagine them drawing a line under it permanently. MacQuarrie may well be saying 'never again' but I find it harder to believe Cruise and the studio are, but that may well just be me.
It's not like Bond where we know there will be another one along soon, there's not going to be another Ethan Hunt so I can't quite picture them shutting the door on him forever.

Yeah I'd agree with that. I think if there's one thing the Bond producers eye with extreme jealously about the MI films it's her. She's so much stronger than any of the Bond women in the Craig era for my money (slight exception for Ana De Armas' scene-stealing turn!), and I think she'd have matched with Craig very nicely.
Aargh, Ferguson as Vesper, that would have been something. But actually, that role would have done Ferguson a disservice: she's so strong and powerful as Ilsa it would have been a shame to miss out on that.
