I'm not really a gun person to be honest, but I do recognise Bond's gun by its size and the look of it.

Would that be too closely tied to the character to retire it?
  • I want a gritty 15 rated Bond with an actor who looks like no one can mess with him Ie like Dan Craig. Bring back smoking , fine dining etc ala Fleming. Forget the humour and gigolo Bond. I want a man's man Bond.

I'm afraid the smoking and "man's man Bond" is what we can forget. Like it or not, they aren't going to jump back in that pool any time soon, what with the current climate and all.

Don't know how much it is controversial here, but I would prefer the reverse: keep and limit the DB5 as Bond's personal car (it could just be a cameo like in TND), but use other brands for the mission; basically what was done during the Brosnan's era.

If EON could have Bond drive cool cars that weren't Aston Martins in 1977, then it can do so again. The car doesn't have to be a Lotus. There are lots of car companies that would love to enter a sponsorship deal with the Bond films. It's time Bond drove a new car instead of a nostalgia piece.

I must say though, if Bond had never driven a car in the movies before and I had to pick a brand today for him to drive, it would still be Aston Martin. They really are perfect for each other.
Although I do like the new Lotuses: the Emira is wonderful.

They're running out of ideas, they're just recycling.

The only unused Fleming left was Diamonds Are Forever and The Spy Who Loved Me.
The Spangs anyone? Or Vivienne Michel? Spectreville as a villain lair in Bond 26?

That's exactly what I have been banging on about, but you missed out TMWTGG too, which again could be incorporated into a gangster led film. Bond goes after the hit man for the Spangled Mob, under the guise of Mark Hazard.

Sorry for the late response, I've been busy.

Cubby had to promise Fleming to use only the title, not the novel as such. And I think, EON will keep their word (at least until Disney or another studio buys up EON and tries to wrench the last of drops out of the franchise). Also it would only make sense if they go for a period 50's style Bond. Apart from the fact, that movigoerts, who are not ardent Fleming connoisseur, might go "Another TSWLM movie? We had the movie. The one with Jaws, the Pyramides, etc.".

Clickbait definitely. We've been seeing those articles for, what, a decade now? I can't wait until the next actor is cast so I can stop seeing his name floated around as a candidate. He's too old now, it's never going to happen.

I think for Bond 26, they need to remake NSNA, much as NTTD was a loose remake of CR '67. Find the IP where they can.

Or they might reflect after 45 or so years, a remake isn't unexpected. Amazing restraint, even.

Wouldn't it just be a loose remake of TB in that case?

When I watched Brosnan as Bond I saw him as being the same person as all the previous Bonds, in the sense that these missions were all a part of this one person's life. Of course it takes suspension of disbelief, especially in regards to Bond staying within the same age range of 30s-50s, but it didn't bother me because they didn't do anything extreme with his character or any of the others. After Felix lost his leg, he was out of the picture and Jack Wade was introduced as Bond's CIA ally. After Bond killed Blofeld in FYEO he wasn't seen again. As loose as the continuity was, it had a basic logic to it. The only real hiccup was Blofeld not recognizing Bond in OHMSS, but I was willing to overlook that and just accept the movie as it was.

The Craig era made things really messy, but even then I accepted Dench playing M once again and Blofeld being reintroduced, even though I didn't like the execution. Craig's Bond could have just bowed out gracefully and left the series open for another reinterpretation, but instead it's been left in a heap of rubble due to an egotistical star and a sycophantic producer who clearly didn't know how to say no to him.

I would be more willing to accept NTTD if it actually was the last James Bond movie, but since it isn't, I see no point to it whatsoever. It has no meaning. Craig's version of Bond died but Bond is still alive? It makes no sense. The level of cynicism on display here on the part of EON rivals that of Disney.

I really don't understand what is so hard to grasp here. I've had heated discussions with a friend who also can't get his head around Bond dying. They will just reboot the franchise and a new Bond will be introduced, as has always happened. There will be no reference to Bond's death and no continuation, and I'm sure most of us would want it this way.

People love to compare NTTD to OHMSS and for that reason I think Bond 26 will be most like DAF.

Bond 26 will serve as a new film that doesn't address what went on in the previous film and it'll probably act as if nothing happened, business as usual.
    New man, new timeline. Simple

@Jordo007 That's an interesting thought. Something to note about DAF as well is that while it's a very silly (some would say stupid) and rather camp film at times, there is arguably an element to it that feels more stripped back and low key than its predecessor...

A bit like NTTD, OHMSS wasn't exactly a small scale Bond adventure. It's long, has a good few locations, a number of high stakes action/chase sequences etc. DAF to me always felt a bit more 'grounded' as a plot during its first two thirds. Bond is investigating a diamond smuggling operation at the beginning, not the big baddie that is SPECTRE. A lot of the film feels strikingly 'film noir'-esque in how Bond goes about his job, as is the case with the characters, the dialogue etc. It slowly becomes more fantastical the more Bond gets involved in the plot, which is also the case with something like DN and LALD...

Ok, the tone is sometimes off, and there are some weird choices... but a Bond 26 that is broadly more low key but willing to embrace those fantastical elements might not be all that bad if done right...

I do look forward to when that happens, because I KNOW people are gonna abandon Bond because of that sooner than they would of learning he was killed off in NTTD.

Yes, he's been suggested on these forums in the past as a potential Bond. I think he's a good choice. He reminds me a lot of Craig and Elba as an actor. My only issue with him is perhaps he'd play the role a bit too similarly to Craig when they need a fresh take on the character. Still, they could certainly do worse.

I was watching Malcolm X last weekend (brilliant film, a masterpiece), and earlier in the film when Malcolm was a young street hood, he takes his girlfriend out to a Jazz bar to watch a performance; he's dressed in a tux, he's smoking, he looks cool and you can see why a lady would want to be on his arm....

In the scene, some very dangerous men surround him and ask him to come outside with them.

He's surrounded, and you see this character's brain doing the math: what are the chances of survival...

During these few moments, I definitely was taken out of the film and a very conscious thought buzzed through my head: that's what James Bond should be.

I didn't see an actor, or a skin colour; all I saw was a a scene bursting with one man's charisma, style, genuine alpha male who is charming, handsome and dangerous...

Denzel is one of the greatest film stars ever, with talent to match. He was only in his early 30s during this project... My god, if the producers could bottle up what he had (and still has), and inject it into the next guy...

This kind of charisma and charm and danger and masculinity is something one is born with. You can't "act" these intangibles... They're innate.... Connery and Craig had this (the others had "something", just not as complete as Denzel, Sean and Dan)....

I just haven't seen these traits in some of our "top contenders", and probably why I'm actually quite high on Sope (with reservations (one, I worry he'd be too close to Craig; two, he's not as polished as an actor... But he is magnetic, alpha, natural and great physically))...
