For sure @Denbigh ... Johnson's wife is seemingly a friend/acquaintance of BB... Plus she herself is a director (and a professional photographer); for all we know, Ms. Broccoli is more interested in Ms. Sam Taylor Johnson as a director for one of her projects, and Aaron tagged along 😂!

I'll eat my hat if any producers for any production hold auditions for a lead actor for a historical series with no script.
I will eat your other hat if this happens thanks for bringing us back to reality

Haha good point @peter! I do have to say if you guys haven’t already, you should definitely watch Nowhere Boy. It was the film where Aaron met his now wife, Sam, who directed the film. It was a biopic of John Lennon’s early life. If there were any doubts about his acting, this film should put those to bed.

Look let me make this clear I believe @peter more then most things

But if Aaron Taylor Johnson is our new 007 I will watch the films and they likely will be more of the fun brosnan affair which isn’t awful

As with several of the other “ candidates “, Doherty would benefit from a bit of quality weight and a bit of weathering.

Maybe, but I’d say he has a much better frame for said weathering than some other candidates, and some photos posted previously show that he’s more than built enough.

Brosnan followed his wife and Cubby spotted and liked him. Maybe history's repeating itself with Johnson? Time will tell, though.

No problem @bondsum ... No one knows exactly what the producers and their partners will do, not even the insiders (since they can only go with what was told, or what they saw).

But the auditioning process is a complex part of film making, and you don't want to take the wrong step out of the gate. There's a schedule, a small crew, actors and a director to round up and a thorough process to manage. It's an exciting time, and my fingers are crossed that it'll be here soon enough (late spring? Early summer? Just guesses and based on zero info).

Welcome back. Your posts have been missed.

Just dropping by to say that I'll be one happy fan if Aaron Taylor-Johnson gets the job.

Good to see some of you back, btw. Who knows, maybe I'll be back as well, eventually. Maybe I/we never left ;)

    Cheers

And a good day to you @Univex, my old pal. I should mention that the only reason I've been absence these past few years is due to the scarcity of Bond news. I'm not that interested in discussing Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Dr Who, Lord of the Rings, or even Marvel, as I see these franchises as mostly defunct now. My fingers are tightly crossed that 007 doesn't go the same way as the aforementioned.

And I agree with you. Aaron Taylor-Johnson isn't a bad choice, if true.

Is it not far too early for casting calls? I would guess that the director will have a say in picking the Bond actor, and a director will more likely be on board once a script or at least a solid script idea is on the table. We have heard of neither so far, therefore I don't believe anyone has had a casting call yet for the role.

My old pal, @bondsum. I've been absent for many reasons. One, the one you mentioned. As for the other reasons, well, the times they are a-changin', and I'm yet to be convinced that Bond isn't, indeed, dead, as are the franchises you so fitly listed. You are, as ever, absolutely right. And the future is somewhat scary for us longtime fans, even for the ones who embrace change with confidence and the proverbial open arms. So, we'll see what comes our way. I say the producers decisions will be a make it or brake it sort of conundrum. I know what I'd do if I were them, but hey, "fans don't know better" seems to be the forums go to mantra when discord of opinions happens, so I'm keeping quiet about my somewhat conservative take on James Bond - and I'm a liberal on most matters.

ATJ would be a fine choice, canonical in many ways, and one who could last them for years to come. I'm not keen on his high pitched voice. But one who has theatrical background, as he does, can place his voice where one wants to. Just listen to David Suchet's real voice, as opposed to his Poirot one. I do believe it to be possible to have auditions before a script is laid out, as this casting process is very different from the more common ones. And I do believe that, at this point, they may have some narrative points or ideas ready to pitch. Good sources have said things, that's true, but time has indeed passed under the proverbial bridge, and 60 year old machines have to keep running, or they'll need costly servicing (haunted by my QOS Omega PO being in service? Probably ;), but I'm coping).

We'll see. As of now, I'll admit that this bit of fake or true news had me more excited for our franchise than any other bit of news from the last pair of years.

Good to be with you all, again. As I said, I've never left ;)

I guess, as a Bond fan, one never does :)

A very enjoyable read @Univex, and I heartily agree with your own sentiments. For the sake of brevity and my own sanity, I decided to sit out any controversial takes on the direction of the franchise. Ultimately, it will be what it will be.

Whether Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been screen-tested or not, it's still possible that he has had serious talks with the producers and that they've let it be known to him and his agent at their Eon offices that he's firmly in contention for the role. Maybe Amazon is splashing the cash like they did with their The Rings of Power TV series and are investing heavily in casting the right actor for the role and have already started the process? Or perhaps the Sun newspaper has taken artistic licence to claim that Taylor-Johnson's had a screen-test when he's only had very positive talks because a meeting isn't that exciting to report on?

My guess is that casting director Debbie McWilliams is again heavily involved in finding the right candidate. Perhaps, like Daniel Craig, the actor will already be on a pre-existing list from the very beginning and has already been called in for that big meeting?

As @peter pointed out, they won't be casting without a script, but who's to say they don't already have one by now and that Cary Fukunaga isn't secretly involved in the audition process? What we do know is that Fukunaga is currently involved in pre-production of Masters of the Air TV series which he's directed 4 out of 9 episodes. Does that mean he has time to spare to oversee screen-tests for Bond 26? I couldn't possibly comment without seeing his busy work schedule. If I go to Bond 26's IMDb page it's simply titled as "Bullets for Winter" and is categorized as in development. Not that I expect to find any golden nuggets of information there.

And here's just a reminder of how Daniel Craig was notified of his role:
“I got a telephone call, ‘Barbara would like to meet,’” recalls Craig, “and I thought, She’s probably seeing fifty people. I’m on a list. I’ll go in, do the interview, say, ‘Hello,’ and that’ll be it. I’d be that old bloke in the pub: ‘Yeah, I was considered for Bond once.’ So, I wasn’t excited or anything, didn’t feel particularly nervous. I’d met Barbara, sadly, at someone’s funeral long before and we had a couple of friends in common, and we just chatted. I don’t know what happened in the first meeting, but they said, ‘We want you to do this.’ I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’ It was not on my radar. Genuinely. Of all the people in the world I would have expected to play James Bond, it was not me. So, I went, ‘Well, I better read the script.’ Then I went away and thought, This is ridiculous. I can’t do this. It felt so far removed from anything I was about, who I was, or what I was doing at the time. It’s not like I was snobbish about Bond. I’m a Bond fan. I love Bond.” In fact, Craig had been a fan ever since his father took him to see Live And Let Die (1973) when he was five. “But it wasn’t me.”

Broccoli sent the script on to Craig for his thoughts. “At a certain point it was, ‘We’ve got a script,’” he remembers. “I was like, ‘Okay, great,’ because I thought, I’m going to read it and go, ‘Thanks very much. It was lovely, but I can’t do this,’ and that’ll be the end of it. We all move on. Very nice. Then I read the script and was blown away. It was everything I would have wanted it to be. It was a resetting. It was witty. It was thrilling. It was dangerous. It ticked all the boxes I thought needed to be ticked if you were going to do James Bond.”
The one big thing I've taken from the Casino Royale casting process is a comment that Barbara Broccoli made about the role. "We wanted to do a twenty-first-century Bond and redefine what a classic male hero should be." Perhaps Aaron Taylor-Johnson is that "redefined classic male hero" for Bond 26? Just a thought.

I don't think there's much chance of Mr Fukunaga being involved.

Neither do I. Courting controversy is not something they are likely to do. And with Fukunaga's more recent 'bad press', that's what they would do if they brought him back.

Of course, there's the "inappropriate behavior" controversy as reported in the Rolling Stone to consider, if true.

Yes exactly, and certainly not with Ms Broccoli's very active role for the female side of the industry.

Even if he doesn’t direct the actual film, I would not be surprised if Martin Campbell were to be brought in to shoot screentests; with his experience, he could make the process go efficiently and test several actors fairly quickly.

So we are all taking Johnson seriously I see…:

Can someone do some fan art with him as 007 I can’t see it in my mind but if the amazing artists here can fix that

That was my attempt, using his apparence from The King's Man as a reference.

The major advantage that mock-ups like these have is that they are silent.

There are moments where he speaks in a lower pitch, so I am sure he will do just fine.

Applying an actors head to an existing picture of an actor who has played Bond is only going to give a false representation of that actor in the role.
Seeing ATJ in Bonds spectre outfit, or Brosnan from GE, doesn’t sell that actor in the role.

Possibly, but ultimately I find him overwhelmingly bland; he is a talented actor, at his best working within an ensemble cast, but can’t see him in the lead role of an iconic franchise.

I have zero issues with his look or his voice, it's whether he has the chops to be the lead in a big movie I'm more concerned about. The evidence so far points to no.
