Pinch of salt Gunn posted a picture of Kingdom Come not so long ago. Though a potential adaption of All Star Superman wow, one of my favorite graphic novels of all time.
I like that they’re going with titles like THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD rather than “BATMAN: [Insert Subtitle]”, though I’m guessing that’s to separate it from Matt Reeves’ films.
The fact that Gunn is giving high praise to THE FLASH is interesting. I’ve been kind of apathetic about it, and now I’m a little cautiously optimistic.
I would have wiped the whole slate clean rather than try integrating any DCEU, but branding them and Matt Reeves’ THE BATMAN as “Elseworlds” is a smart move.
It's much of what I would expect from Gunn.
Hopefully we will see the League of Assassins and the Court of Owls in the Batman and Damian films.
Bit rough how Pattinson's Batman has been relegated to not being the proper one anymore.
Well... some of what he's saying makes sense, but some of what they're doing... I dunno.
Blue Beetle? Booster Gold? Okay, I try not to judge things before I've seen them... but does the world really need a Blue Beetle movie?
Oh, and one suggestion I really think James Gunn needs to pay attention to: stop calling any of DC's properties "marvelous," okay? You're just giving free advertising to the competition here. Seriously, call them "fabulous" or something, all right? Geez, I'm surprised some people need to be told some things...
Given how things have been playing out, I'm not sure Pattinson's Batman was ever imagined to be joining a larger universe. At least from the sound of things, Reeves wanted to keep his Batman films their own thing rather than share it. THE BATMAN was conceived at a time when WB decidedly put more focus on giving characters solo films rather than build a universe.
Since Gunn has a take on Batman that he wants to do, but also wants Reeves to keep up with a (so far) successful run, it makes sense to label Pattinson's as "Elseworlds".
I hope for Superman (and Supergirl) we get characters from the comics themselves. They have a great supporting cast. Especially villains. I hope they use some of them!
I did feel that Gunn was maybe trying too hard to prove he is a DC fan, the proof will be in the pudding.
I hope he is true to his word and the writers and directors can fully express there creative visions. A big positive is whether people agree with Gunn's vision or not at least he appears to have one.
I don't think he was ever destined to meet Superman, no; but I think he was supposed to be the main, current Batman. 'The' Batman, if you will :)
Bruce and Damian as Batman and Robin in The Brave and the Bold sounds like a great new direction to take cinematic Batman in. Hopefully the fact that we're already getting live-action Jokers in two concurrent elseworlds properties means they'll give the Joker a rest for a while too. At first I thought there might be a chance Batfleck could return, especially if they're going for a slightly older Batman, but then I realized Gunn said "the introduction of the DCEU's Batman," which would seem to suggest it's neither Batfleck nor Keatonman (either one of which would seem a perfect shoo-in).
Swamp Thing as a dark horror story sounds fantastic too (to use Gunn's new favorite word). You can tell from the video that the projects Gunn is really excited about are Superman: Legacy and The Authority. He really livens up after he finishes talking about the DCEU films that have already been made and are awaiting release. Only makes sense I guess since those weren't his projects. I think I'm most interested to hear who gets cast as the new Batman and Superman and to see how Swamp Thing develops.
Swamp Thing is the one I'm most excited about right now. I'm a big fan of what Wein and Moore did with the character. Told well (i.e. not how it was done in Craven's film), we might be in for a treat. However, I see this as pretty niche. Can't imagine a wide audience for Swamp Thing.
It does seem an odd choice out of all DC characters to give a whole film to, but then again Gunn seems like he's more into the odd, peripheral characters (Guardians of the Galaxy, Suicide Squad), and he did say this was an incomplete lineup. Curious as to what else'll be part of "Gods and Monsters."
That would be interesting for sure.
Here's what I'm still wondering about. Snyder's films took a lot of beating for being too dark and too gloomy. Aquaman, Birds Of Prey, Shazam, ... felt like a departure from that, intentional or not, but presumably the former.
Meanwhile, both Joker and The Batman, also WB/DC products, went pretty dark too, literally and figuratively. And those films were well-received. Granted, they have other qualities to offer as well.
If Gunn is gunning (NPI) for "dark horror" adaptations of Swamp Thing and potentially other stuff, can we expect a different kind and level of dark, or more of Snyder's "dark", or Reeves' kind of dark, or ...? What does the room expect this darkness to be like?
Perhaps Michael Fassbender if he can pull of an American accent
