Here's a new interview with Higson about the book. It's behind a paywall but they are ways of circumventing that (I'm told 👀).

Personally I think it's nice that Higson's doesn't give The Times the time of day about the culture war nonsense it whips up. I'm completely confident SilverFin would've been decried as 'woke' if it had come out today.

Also not that I imagined he was but it's nice to get confirmation that Higson isn't a staunch royalist and that the book hasn't been officially endorsed by the Prince's Trust because of the whole regicide angle, puts that fear of mine to rest.

Despite him clearly knowing his Fleming I like that he's not going to be beholden to it, the fact is a modern Bond in his mid-30's prime is going to be a millennial. The interesting thing is to see in what ways or not that changes the character of Bond.

I for one welcome the Sherwood, Higson, Kennedy Johnson trinity. I don't think there's been a better time to be a literary Bond fan. Long may they reign 😄

For heaven’s sake, these papers are obsessed with ‘woke’, whatever it’s supposed to mean. It’s exhausting.

    Thank you for the link.

    Apparently, that's woke. :-??

I imagine Bond would read the latest journals for research purposes. I don't see anything wrong with that myself. He had a reading desk and library in Moonraker (1955) after all. Some of these commentators need to calm down. They're "woke" on the brain.

I can confirm kimchi pre-dates Bond. So no conflict there.

Q had a New Scientist mag in NTTD - maybe Bond flicked through it while waiting for supper.

Well spotted. In terms of other spy films I was thinking of the scientist who goes missing from the train at the start of The Ipcress File. He was reading a copy of the New Scientist though that wouldn't have been so out of place I suppose.

I’m reading ‘A Hard Man To Kill’ at the moment to get into the Higson mode. Then I’ll resume with Casino Royale and then on to Live and Let Die unless of course OHisMSS is released on Kindle, in which case I’ll read this first. When I finish LALD, that’ll be the end of my latest Fleming Bond reading stint. I started with Moonraker this time around and read through to TMWTGG and will finish up with LALD. I like to do this with the Rocky films too - start with part 3 and finish with part 2 - in his younger years and perhaps his more glorious days.

I really can’t even remember whether I’ve read ‘A Hard Man To Kill’. In terms of the Young Bond books, I know I’ve read all the Higson and Cole full length novels.

I don’t suspect for a moment that this will be the case but I wish the modern Bond in OHisMSS smoked a little, say, just three or four cigarettes a day to keep it more realistic. Bond’s follies are what makes the character more interesting otherwise he’s closer to just another generic action hero.

    176. Looks to be a significant volume on the shelf. Or at least compare to Octopussy and the Living Daylights at 94 pages.

With no Amazon US presence I'm thinking it may be a limited printing and release. Or else delayed months for the US as with the Sherwood book.

Still my "early release" shipped the 26th will surely arrive after 2nd and even 4th May. I'll be out of town until the 10th so won't be receiving it before then likely.

Thanks for the Amazon link i preordered it and cant wait i will be very happy with owning it now to finish Win Lose Or Die before i start this book

This should light the fire under me to get it done

Win, Lose or Die is a good Gardner novel. I was flicking through it again a while ago and the quality of the writing really stood out. It kind of predicted the kind of Islamic terrorism we've seen in the West over the last 25 years or so, albeit the villains motives were cynically financial rather ideological.

I know i picked it on your recommendation i have been going through Gardner rather haphazardly again if i had to pick my favorite author it would be Benson (dont shoot me fleming purists I realize he is more important but Benson grabs me faster)

But Gardner sometimes i love him (death is forever and Seafire) and other times well (licence renewed and Icebreaker both were just ok for me)

I will say even Gardner i am not a huge fan i prefer to the slew of authors we got since 2008 with the exception of Deaver

For me ranking the authors currently

    Benson
    Fleming
    Gardner
    Deaver
    Horowitz
    Faulks
    Boyd (i couldnt stand solo)

Over all i am hoping the hype is real and Higson’s modern bond thriller sits between benson and fleming ( but who knows maybe Higson will be my favorite)

My ranking of the adult Bond authors:

    Fleming
    Pearson
    Horowitz
Gardner (the first half of his series)
    Amis
Gardner (the second half of this series)

After Gardner, I just can’t decide. None of these books by the other authors stand out to me in any way

I ate kimchi when I lived in South Korea so I approve. ;)

Well, as for reading ‘New Scientist’, maybe the Times are upset about not being mentioned in the book. Fleming’s Bond read The Times.

It's actually fermented cabbage mixed with red pepper.

Or the best for me is cucumber kimchi.

Okay then sour can fit the kimchi description anyway. (If it's bitter it needs to ferment more. Still like The Times, maybe.)

Thank you. That was a interesting story and viewpoints on NTTD. Based on his comments, the MI6 regulars will be in it. And Blofeld won’t. It also sounds like a very one-off story, based on Higson’s comments.

Thank you for the link. I tried that one but I think my cookies must be stopping it or something.
Slightly frustratingly ‘woke’-obsessed article, but it seems there is at least some relevance to the actual 007 story so I guess it’s an okay angle. I am liking the sound of the book though, should be fun.
Certainly sounds like he’s taken some cues from the Heinrich attempted coup in Germany, and is also working out some frustrations with some of the other more annoying people about nowadays :) Just like Fleming worked out some of his against modernist architects!

I'm in America, we don't have a physical copy release date, unfortunately. Maybe Higson will talk about another Bond book.
