Where does Bond go after Craig?

  • More Mescal rumours. According to this new article, Mescal and ATJ are the two frontrunners: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-12846345/paul-mescal-james-bond-007.html
Well, it comes from the Daily Mail so no chance this rumour is true. It doesn't mean Paul Mescal or ATJ didn't meet with Eon (we know ATJ met with Barbara Broccoli according to Puck News which is a far stronger source), but we won't learn it from the Daily Mail that has never been a reliable publication.
  • it comes from the Daily Mail so no chance this rumour is true.

?? The Daily Mail posted countless Bond rumours in the Craig era that turned out to be true.
  • Well @peter, I guess in that case all I can say is I just fundamentally disagree, and I’ve listed my reasons, as you have also. This must be where we agree to disagree then. I hope I didn’t come across as rude, I certainly wasn’t trying to. I do hope you find enjoyment in Brosnan’s era at some point in the future, and I do mean that with sincerity because there’s plenty to love about his take on Bond, just like all the others.

But mark my words, you WILL be converted…

Cavill is still by far the best choice. Sorry. *shrug*

Are you apologising because you think he's awful too?

We can thank the James Bond subreddit for that gem.

ATJ does seem like an obvious choice right now, given his fame and his filmography is similar to Craig before he was cast. Although I'm not a fan of his potential casting whatsoever, I can see why it's being mentioned as a "done deal".

As for Mescal, I hope he's not in the running either. I think there's been a few more interesting choices posted here. Hopefully he'll be busy with Gladiator 2.

I'm sure Mescal is a fine actor but the idea that he is right for Bond is laughable in my opinion. Nothing about him evokes anything of a masculine ideal in my eyes.

While he's far from being my favourite contender for the role, he reminds me of Pierce Brosnan: an actor seen by many, especially in the US, as the idea actor, to the point of expecting him to be chosen. From a marketing perspective, it would be easier for Eon to sell Cavill as their new Bond, in the same way that Brosnan would have been easier to sell for Broccoli than Dalton back in 1987.

Cavill is like Roger Moore too. A safe choice for difficult times.

Cavill is *only* 40. I'd say he could still do it. I don't want him to, but he could.

I don't see the Mescal Bond vision, but it does make me extremely curious if there is a vision for that out there that would sell? I'd be interested in what they came up.

Cavill will be like Brosnan, exactly what I expect. Mescal would be another Craig, we'd have to wait to see what they come up with. That's terrifying, but interesting. Though I agree he does not seem at all fit for it.

  • Paul Mescal is looking ripped these days. He's definitely had a Hollywood glow-up. I saw Aftersun and was so impressed with Paul Mescal. That film is perfectly served by Mescal’s signature brand of softboi gentleness. I went and watched him in Normal People after (which is a bit of a slog and not worth the hype) and he was probably even better. He is so subtle and emotional. He has this really masculine bruised energy. There is something of a young Brando to him. He could do something actually new with Bond (opposed to ATJ who just seems to be 'more of the same'). Mescal has this quality which he could show us Bond maturing into a more hardened, troubled masculine figure. He just got the lead role in Gladiator 2 and has a string of A24 films on the way. Surely that would put on BB's radar? He would be a really really interesting choice for Bond......

The story about there being an older and younger Bond in the next film sounds a bit weird and very much in the realm of ‘bulls*it early rumours’. I also suspect EON wouldn’t be ‘in talks’ with any actor in this way (ie. Seriously discussing the possibility of giving them the job) and would instead still be in preliminary meetings, or indeed later down the line ‘offering’ actors the role (which means essentially inviting them to audition, which remember is a big part of this process as BB isn’t keen on choosing a Bond ‘by coronation’ as has been mentioned in the past).

Unless there’s some weird twist in the wording here (ie. an early script concept features a villain/separate character who was originally 007 with James Bond being the ‘younger 007’ here) I’m not sure if what’s being written will be the case in practice. And I think Mescal will be too busy for Bond anyway.

I thought it actually sounded different enough to be true. If I were betting on it, my money would be on it all being bull. But it's at least something we've not heard before.

    1. Why cast a 40-looking 30-year old when you want a "younger" Bond? He looks unconventionally attractive in some ways but that's it. Not James Bond.

    2. It's an interesting rumor. They could be doing an interpretation of TMWTGG novel, with the old 007 seemingly rogue or brainwashed and maybe M. sends his replacement to kill him. It would be a fun twist if they do cast two "007" agents and we don't know which one ends up being "James Bond" until the end of the movie! Would be impossible to pull off though.

I was thinking of Forever and a Day for the two 007s, honestly. We’ll see what happens.

I really, REALLY hate this "Bond 26 will star two 007s, one younger and one older" rumour. I hate it because it was completely MADE UP by The Sun. In other words, it's not a rumour. It's fake news.

The Sun simply rewrote the Daily Mail article from a couple of days ago that claimed that two actors are in the run to play 007, a "younger" one (Mescal) and an "older" one (ATJ). The original Daily Mail article did NOT claim that both actors would play Bond in the next film.

That’s still too grotesquely old for this day and age. Ideally, the next Bond we get is someone in his early to middle 30s, as by the time they retire they’ll be at 50, more or less.

Brosnan and Craig had their last films in production when they were 49 and 51 respectively. Kind of the perfect time to take a bow.

I simply don't expect more than three films from the next guy, hopefully at no more than 3 years between each. So a 10-15 year run.

I'm curious about what you mean by this, as surely that's a good description of what Craig's Bond was?

I very much agree. Out of the two, one is a nuanced and interesting actor.

The other, not so much. In most of the roles I’ve seen ATJ play, he’s incredibly dull. He fades into the background. He just isn’t that dynamic of a presence, IMO.

Haven’t seen much of either actor, but it appears ATJ would be the “safer” choice, while Mescal would be the more interesting choice.

Mescal is an exciting and very talented actor. They'd be lucky to land him. He is more on the rise than Craig was...I'd bet good money he's at least on the short list.
